Any Tips On How To Fly The Lerk Now?

DoppleDopple Join Date: 2002-12-31 Member: 11698Members
I'm sure that the PTs and Vets have mastered flying the lerk, with the new 3.0 model. However, I simply can't seem to get off of the ground - it's like gravity is pulling at me. When I do become airborne, I constantly have to flap wings, else I plunge to the ground again.

So I'm reduced to walking, being some sort of slower more-armored Skulk.

any tips?

Point where you want to fly. Tap jump twice to pick up full speed and hold on to your jump button to glide.

from playing 3.0 for 1 day now, i can make the lerk do anything i want. its really nice. just take some time and test it out. if ur in the air and wanna go down, look down. same for all other directions. only thing i see as a problem u cant jump and fly backwards while looking forwards unless u are already moving, then spin 180 without hitting jump

This thread should go in the beta forum, but... well, here's some flight tips.

Glide. A lot. You should be gliding almost the whole time. Once you realise that, the rest will most likely come naturally.

Dying a lot? Don't stop. Don't get greedy and take more than one bite, just bite once and keep going. Speed is life. If you use this tactic, focus gets a lot better than it would otherwise be. If you have the energy, spore them as you're flying in and you may well kill them in 1 hit.

Celerity is really good at the moment: your flight speed increases dramatically.

Adrenaline is also pretty good at the moment because flapping costs fairly significant energy. You can still fly without it but it's harder to do that and spore too.

Celerity can be your friend if you use it right. Of course, up against a group of marines you need adrenaline.

As for practising flying....I suggest starting a LAN game of co_pulse and practise flying through the map. If you get if right you can fly to and from MS more than 5 times. sv_cheats must be set to 1 btw.

EDIT : I see that you're actually having trouble getting off the ground....no worries, just aim a little bit higher and you should be good to go.

One more tip in addition to those already mentioned: Dive. Especially from high places (the higher the better). If you start a glide off by diving, you can fly for miles. It also helps your speed too. If you make it a habit of landing on tall objects and in rafters and stuff, you'll be able to launch much faster. Just jump off whatever you're standing on, swoop towards the ground (don't hit it, or you'll stop). Then you can happilly glide across half a level before you need to flap again! Starting from the ground is much harder, because you'll need to flap alot to get some height before you can dive and then glide.

You pansies with your celerity and adren. You dont need either of those if you have silence.

Sorry, just struck me as funny.

Everyone has already said how to do it, so I just thought I'd add in a couple more things and a little bit of flight style

First thing, if you fall a bit (while holding forward) and then hit space, it gives you more speed.

Second thing, try aiming up, flapping once, gliding a little, letting go, falling a little, and then flap and glide again, and keep repeating. I found that when I did this it made me feel quite stylish, and go quickly. It also makes you bob up and down, which makes you harder to be hit, yet you don't loose speed doing it, so it's good.

Another important thing with lerk, if you're doing fly by's, is to aim at them really quickly and bite as you go by, if you take too long, your lerk flight will get messed up and you'll be trying to fly into them and you'll loose alot of speed and it will just be bad.

also flapping from a high up place and aiming down and then gliding along the ground gains you a bit more speed due to the falling part.
edit: oh, evo already got the last point.

Do double flaps, not single flaps.
  • saberxsaberx Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3044Members
I had the same problem until I realized I had to hold down my jump key once I going.

fly+bite is much simpler now, i can kill at leat three people whe they are only attacking a lerk

Yes, the new lerk has a less sensitive fly ability now. Its not so crazy when you try to fly it. Try to aim for the marines, then bite their !@#es off.

    Correction.

You don't need Silence if you're glide obsessed. I used to always take Silence in 1.04, and now we have a much better glide you can just use that for most of your flying, meaning 99% of the time the marine never hears me until the first bite.

flap twice hold down space and glide.

its not hard... just unlearn what you have learned.

the new lerk is 100% different from 2.01 in flight and in how it should be played

What is better then for a lerk? Adrenaline? or Celerity?
Because in ns maps you can only take one of them.

    I'd say Celerity.

Once you start to glide a lot, you gain back the adren you spent flapping between wingbeats anyway, so Adren is more useful to Umbra/Spore Lerks who will follow Fades for support.

The best upgrades for a lerk are this in normal ns: Celerity, Focus, Carapace. If anyone disagrees with my unexplained answers try it and find out ;p

Well the new lerk flight is easier and all, but is more or less similar to the 1.04 model (whos only problem was vertical lift), all happy dodging techniques have been removed, such as strafe flapping & bouncing off the ceiling. Meaning, its easier for most people to fly but is more difficult to dodge in.

dont know if this has been advised yet but :

    what i do is:

bind mwheelup and down to +jump
    and space to +jump

what u can do is first use your mwheel to fly/accelerate and then hold your space to glide/fly

and wenn u slow down simply let go of space use your mwheel to accelerate again and there you go.. so no more wacking your space button

Even if the Lerk is a killer now, he has still his support role, do your teammate a favor and pick adrenaline for spores/umbra.

    I dunno Ziggs.

Focus is only great for Lerks until Armour 1, at which point I drop it for SoF. The more practise I get, the easier I'm finding a double-swoop-bite anyway. Oh, and regen/cara is just a matter of preference really.

i find if you stay around to register more than 2 bites youre already dead, especially without most upgrades. With the new lower armour values medspam is useless, as it should be.

focus for lerks is great because he as the best counter against armor upgrades (till HA): spores. I spam the marines with spores till I'm sure that they have lost their armor and then I fly in and every bite is a kill.

Lerks can either be combat lerks with Focus, carapace and celerity for mainly biting with some sporing, or support lerks, choosing regen/SoF/adren and spending their time umbraing/Primal screaming (or scouting for marines).

The second lerk is more useful and lives longer, the first one is more fun.

First day of 3.0 I took this demo of me flying through tanith. When I'm not flapping I'm gliding. Hope this helps understanding how it works!
