Comp shuts down if I try.
Im putting this in this forum cause it only seems to happen if i try and compile my maps. I've had it happen at different stages of the compile. But my computer will just shut down. No warnings, as if power went out. I just got a new 550watt power supply, my computer is not overheating, its running at 30C all the time. Could this be bad hard drive. My C is kinda old, and I think I heard some noise from it today. But its only when I compile a map so far. Im confused...

Can we get your system specs:
- cpu brand/type
- memory type
- agp card
- motherboard brand/type
- which OS your running
-Memory 2 333mhz 512 sticks Not sure on the speed
-AGP radeon 9800 pro 128 mb
-MOBO MSI K&N2 Delta Nforce 2 chipset agp 8x/DDR 400 support
-OS Win 98 se
This is weird, it just started happening. Ive neva had probs compiling.. Last successful compile was jan13. Nothing has been changed on my system till I had this prob.
When this started, I found that my power supply wasn't giving enough wattage, my comp needed 448, i had a 400 in there. I bought a 550, and I still have the same prob.
well the standart voltages on it are
v-core 1.65 volt
chipset 1.7 volt
memory 1.5/1.6 volt
Make sure your check these voltages in your bios
Also make sure you have the extra 5 volt powecable plugged into the motherboard, socket is probably located near the motherboard main powersupply. It's a square plug with 4 connections on it. This will provide your AMD with a stable 5volt which it really needs at 3000+
I hope this solves the problem and if not your can also try updating the bios

(Mayb an upgrade to windows2000pro or mayb even XPpro will make your pc run more stable since windows 98, although very nice/fast, could have problems with the hardware used)

Windows 98... probably not what's causing the problem but I would recommend Windows XP Pro. Also, run some diagnostics on that HDD and see what turns up. (ScanDisk etc...)
Oh also, I would NOT recommend Windows Me or XP Home, Windows 2000 is a pretty decent OS however, so look into it.

I dont like xp. Crashed my HL. Ive read its a common prob with xp, so i went back to 98.
And yes, its not my breakers going. Even with all meh computers running... HEH
As for running HL in XP... didja try compatibility mode? Also, make sure your display drivers are up-to-date.
XP ain't bad, I recommend it over the other crappy Windoze OSes. If it weren't for XP I'd totally be running Linux right now.
Of course, it's tad risky to turn on your PC with one side exposed to cold air....but you'll have to use that to see if your fans are working right. Just one fan can pretty much stop your PC.
And of course, there's the fried mobo issue, but its not likely, because you're PC runs fine.
Best bet would be the memory though, its usually the culprit when it comes to sudden crashes and such
If this isn't your problem, good luck.....
Have you checked that 5voltage connector? since I still believe your cpu isnt getting enough "stable voltage" for its memory/northbridge bridge
And if its only happening during the compile process it has to be cpu related since it does the calcuations not the memory, this just seems logocal to me and pls correct me if im wrong since im a hardware almanac not a compiler programming almanac thats where XP-Cagey comes in
You can also test your cpu with pifast. It tests if the cpu is running stable (for example, if an overcloaked cpu wont crash in games and system tests like the futuremark it still could be unstable and dammaging the cpu). This programe does a "simple" calcuation of PI and if it detects that the cpu makes a calcuation error it gives an error message.
Conclusion if this happens:
1. your cpu is overcloaked
2. your cpu isnt getting enough stable voltage (the 5volt connector)
If it completes the test without problems its not your cpu problem

btw my score on my 2500+ running @ 2450mhz(3800+) was 58.28 sec, love to know yours with that 3000+
[edit]Hope you can compile soon I want to see new screens of Map Wip?[/edit]
That pi thing caused my pc to shut down same way as if im compiling. Could I have done somethin when cleaning my cpu...? I used nailpolish remover with asetone. Was told thats ok, and some q-tips. But, again, I couldn't get all of the cheezy thermal pad off of the sides of the core.
Im sure the fans are all working and the 5 volt connector is in. My cpu is not over clocked.
The memtest did give some errors on test5 only. I read that if i get an error, it could be mem, cput, or mobo...
Ill run the test again later and copy down the results..
Btw mayb you could take it to your local computershop and ask if they can test your cpu. I had the same problem, only mine was that I put to much artic silver on the core (a cooling pasta) and after I put the heatsink on it didnt start some of the pasta has spread to the transistor causing a electrical discharge and fried my cpu . In your case the nailpolish remover or asetone could have dammaged those transistors.
As for nailpolish remover or asetone thats not a problem as long as it hasnt touched the bridges arround the core. uhm I mean those transistors
Yeah, I think I did get some of the nailpolish remover on the transistors...
Kouji San, could u turn on MSN messenger, I wana talk to ya..
you could also download
3dmark03 @ Futuremark
And run the default test (also cool to look at )
It runs 3d tests and also cpu tests, so if it crashes during the cpu test. you have your answer also try updating all drivers of the pc and bios and if it still crashes in these tests on cpu test it must be dammaged...
if you dont like XP why dont u try w2000pro its the most stable platform Microsoft has to offer, windows XP is faster and not that much more unstable but the look YUCK |yeah i know one can change it |
But yes, I think that ram exercise caused by the compiler sounds like a good explanation. Ram problems are the #1 reason that stable software crashes.
Thats a real bummer dude!
Edit : Kouji San = benchmarks (of office type apps) show XP to be 10% slower than win2K, and another 10% slower on top of that until you turn off the "New XP bubble look"

Which arctic silver where you using? Arctic silver 3 and 5 are not conductive but they can mess things temporarilly if you smudge it on pins and things because it increases the capacitance(sp?) until you wash it off. I'm pretty sure arctic silver 1 and 2 isn't conductive either, I think you might have been scammed on that paste(i.e. a falsely labeled bottle of conductive silver grease).
Have you run memtest86 yet?
If you get errors evenly and sporadically it is most likely the memory or the power(not necessarilly the PSU either, could be capacitors on the mother board that have leaked/broke or the wall socket giving you very "dirty" power(lots of noise, to low voltage)), if you start getting errors only after the computer has been through a few passes then most likely the north bridge or CPU are overheating or not getting enough juice.
Even if it is the processor, you might have just "missed a spot" while applying thermal paste or a big spec of dirt or something(maybe you ate cookies when applying the thermal paste? ... j/k)ended up on the core, then a small part of the processor might be overheating while most of the processor stays cool.
Also, nothing is overheating. Nothing is goin over 40C.
WooHoo, got it to work... I redid the arctic silver, cleaned the cpu and heatsink. Then I found that I had the heatsink in backwards.... Heh, good thing it was like that only for a few days.. Thanx for all your help
