Commanding in the commander screen...used?

Playtesters or predictions... teamwork?
Ok i've gathered that the commander can place turrets and buildings and ammo and supplies..

But I'm afraid that on public servers it won't really work together.

(plz correct if I'm misinformed)

If its a public server, is there any guarantee that someone will be the commander? What if no one wants to navigate in an RTS screen but would rather just run and shoot some aliens?

Or if a turret or a building is ordered for construction... what if no one feels like grabbing a welding tool and building it?

And while I personaly would do what experienced commanders would tell me to, I don't think l33td00d or Killer_007 will will pay any attention to the commander if he gives them a waypoint...

The aliens, however, can just run around getting personal kills, not having to communicate the locations of enemies...

Will the marines need teamwork to win?

A marine team that does not have a commander is dead.

The commander drops the Infantry Portal - without an infantry portal built, marines will not respawn.

Without a turret factory, there will be nothing to protect the infantry portal and Command Center from attack.

Without an armory, the marines will soon run out of ammunition.

The Commander is integral to the Marine side of the game... if noone wants to play it, they marines will lose. Simple as that.

I see.. does the commander get points for ordering the construction of buildings or anything like that?

    Marines don't have points.

Or atleast you can't see them

If someone doesn't want to be a commander or follow orders, they will join the aliens instead. If they can't join the aliens, they will learn to be commander and follow orders--or else they're dead.

but do u understand now how the game is made to work? Marines have to have a commamder to gain any kind of leverage on the map. Commanders besides building buildings issue medical care and possibly ammo (i dont know, because now people are saying armory gives ammo, maybe both) There is a whole tech tree for the marines to climb in terms of abilities and equipment which cannot be reached without the commander and has to be gotten in order for the marines to even have a chance. The other vital role the commander plays is organizing the troops. From the stories I've read an unorganized marine team does not survive long. So yes teamwork is vital to marines as is the commander. On a public server people who dont feel like working together will get frustrated and leave, espeacially after not being able to even see their kill count. (which would most likely be 0 for a careless marine) k... im done

using an armory gives free ammo, otherwise the commander can drop some at the cost of RPs

It was definitely a good idea to not have a kill count for the marines. Not only does it hopefully eliminate the "I'm going to work for myself, not the team" mentality of many gamers in supposed teamplay games, but it gives reason for a parasited (is it Parasite or am I thinking of SC?) marine to actually want to do a suicide manuever for the good of the team.

Welders are not used for construction. Marines just have to hold their 'use' key at them. Explanation of how this works will be in the manual.

And in Chapter One of "Six Days in Sainji" by the great Jeff Paris. I highly suggest you read it, it can be found in the "World" section of natural-selection.org (in can you have the forums up without the toolbar, as I do).

Well, if worse came to worse the true NS faihtful could form some kind of uber-clan and pool their money for a bunch of private servers.

Lol I've heard hundreds of people say that they will fight for the commander spot, but this is the only time really I've seen someone say the opposite. *sigh, if somebody is really a team player and there's no commander he'll hop into the spot. Otherwise the marines are dead. Playing w/out a commander is like having 0 hives. And nobody is willing to build more hives.
  • InexorableInexorable Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1360Members
The only reason I can't see that happening is because without hives, you can't morph into a Fade. I can however see a half-dozen players refusing to give up their Fade-ness and morph back into builders so that they can replace all the dead hives.
