Make sure you have the most recent drivers for your video card installed, as well as other components.
Reset your resolution to the lowest resolution possible to reduce system resource usage and try to approach the resolution you want step by step.

Reinstalling Steam/Half-Life (whatever you are using) might help as well.

thats my system, and when i change the resoultion to the lowest, it works as good as the highest, and when i reboot i still got that resoultion, and i have reinstalled and repaired steam about 20 times, so i have no idea what the problem is, it should work like a wonder but it doesn't
