Crashes And Other Pleasantries

My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce MX 440, os XP and the problem would be this:
If I have to hop out of the game and back to Windows for some strange reason I will get two lovely little reactions from the graphics card, depending on the drivers I use. If I use the older drivers for the card, the game will then continue to crash and bring XP down completely. And if I happen to do that with the newer drivers I get to see through walls. :/
Now I rather not have either, but so far I've been content with having my computer booting itself oncce in a while rather since I like to see the walls in order to not keep running straight at them.
Anyone have any idea what might be done about this? This problem never occurred with Win2k and the same graphics card. Any help would be appreciated. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

When you changed to XP, did you change the drivers? I think Win2k would use different drivers then XP, and it might cause problems if you just installed without removing your old drivers.

I am guessing you are ussing WON still.

HL does NOT work with alt-tabing out (if your loose focus on HL it will mess up, how it will mess up is random and depends alot on your hardware)

I would also suggest making sure you are in OGL mode (not D3D or software)

oh, and suposedly one of the steam patches fixed the alt tab bug <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)

It does in fact have the same drivers, yet windows did not accept the older ones yet used the ones it found itself (for the correct card though). With those I simply get a crash. If updating drivers I get to see through all walls. HL has always worked with alt-tabing for me, but guess it's a first time for everything.

I suppose I'll be waiting for a good reason to install Steam then. Thanks for the help. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    /me shakes head

    Good reasons to install Steam:

    1) WON will eventualy go away,
    a) so you should get steam working before that happens

    2) NS3.0 is Steam only, [goto 1) a)]

    3) Just b/c you are installing Steam dosn't force you to unistall normal HL, thus you can still play on WON

    4) WON HL will never be updated again

    5) Steam Works now

I've had instances in the past where I couldn't get back into HL after alt-tabbing, or once back in my sound would be gone. I currently also get invisible walls but in a different way. If Trillian notifies me that I have an email waiting it'll cause the invislbe walls. After about 20 seconds the notification disappears and HL returns to normal. Thansal's right about the effects being quite different depending on your setup. The only issue I get now with alt-tabbing is once back into HL I can see my mouse cursor overlapping my crosshairs and everything seems slightly jittery. ESC>Resume fixes this though. It's possible it may fix your invisible walls issue also.

Esc -> Resume unfortunately doesn't fix the problem at all, is the first thing I tried to do. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

And about Steam, the good reason to install it is not yet here. So I'll do that once NS3.0 comes out, not sooner. Just because something is there and is working, is not a good reason to install it. The only use I'd get out of it is avoiding the occational crash when I play, but... *shakes her head* I'm not that much into wasting my whole bandwith for a download yet. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    hehe

unless you are low on HDD space I would suggest setting up Steam now.

simply so that once ns3.0 comes out you wont be one of the many foolish people right here yelling at us to make steam work for them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> (instead you will have it running nice and smooth before then)

just get steam all set up and stuff and then when 3.0 comes out you can go right into playing.

And if you have limited BWidth, then start DLing steam via a torrent now (you can do it it small chunks and you wont compleatly kill your bwidth when you have to DL all of 3.0 and steam <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)

I wont be yelling at you to make it work. I'll be whining to a friend so she'd help me. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Is good enough <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
