I just look at things wherever I go, and then in my crazy own way go about (in my head) adding things that would make them look like NS. Then you get crazy architecture ideas after awhile and it just comes to you naturally.
There's a topic in this forum called screenshots let me start... It is 80 pages long and has about 100 screenshots of stuff people made. They will make you go through all 80 pages to see more.
there is a thread somewhere that was exactly like this will be. what did I answered? *thinks* I get ideas either when I go to sleep or (much better) in the morning about 5 seks after I woke up. than suddenly pictures rush through my head. so Im able to create much more interesting areas withot thinking half the day....
all kind of pictures, movies, games that are similar to what you want your map to look like...
exspecially walls: I think the most people work it out. first a plain wall, then buttom set up some units forth or back, a trim that lights the floor, specia architectur covering the top and building the ceiling on top... something like that.

- Shat just pops up in my mind. Dunno where it comes from, I just make maps out of it. Might be aliens beaming genius ideas into my brain to fulfill some sinister agenda...
- When you make a brush in Hammer, it usually pops up in a stupid place (I'm switching to QERadiant any day now...) but sometimes the silly placement of the brush looks neat. So I leave it there. Or sometimes there's a wierd texture that actually works, or an unifinished room I'm working on gives me a new, crazier idea than what I originally had in mind.
- Other maps. Not the specific idea, of course, but how the other mapmaker made their stuff look so smooth, or so chunky, or so metallic, or so wierd... try to capture that and gene-splice it into teh killar map.
- Real-world architecture.
- Architecture in movies! Take a look at the backgrounds in like, the Star Wars and X-Men movies! It's neeeeat.

i usually built up a place depending on my layout. Its like so here in need a big room with 3 entrys like this and so on and i just build my room with little ideas like an imposing ceiling with a heavy ventilation and stuff.
I look a lot also at what other ppl do. Some are really good . Post your screenshots is pure insparation But also walking around finished maps looking at architecture and stuff in ns and many other games (unreal...)
Fims have some crazy architecture somethimes too, a corrodor or room even in those with nothing to do with ns. See that big lift room, the main entry for the hidden military base in hulk (even if i don't really like that movie :s) imagine thats a hive just been invaded by marines :D:D
Real achitecture is good too. Sometimes a see a good room and i just sau to myself this would be such a good room for ns. One of the main combat rooms in the upcomming ns_aurora:d is infact base on one of the connecting rooms in the gare st-lazare in Paris.
the musik i listen to at the momment influencies me alot also...
Usually i just build what feels right. But i can really recommend the Alien movies for inspiration. Watching Alien Resurrection recently just got my mapping blood pumping.
I tend to block a lot, but when I'm inspired most of the times is because of:
- Thinking about architecture I've seen and might look cool - The uses a part of a texture can have (and architecture that may fit with it) - I do a wall or a single part and the rest of the room comes alone...
I suck making corridors btw, no inspiration for those.

I just find random girls and ask them if they want to see my monkey, and usally they answer "yes" And so it goes, in bed, and when i look at her privats - i think of the world of NS aliens. Then i explore her Architecture , and from there i get the inspiration!

my bit of advice would be "go for a walk and look at EVERTHING down to the
last little detail".

My crazy wacky mind.
