Public Play

An Idea
Basically public play has become absymal: teamwork is none existent, idiot comms deciede a spam of 10 comm chairs is a good strategy to win... the list goes on.

The basic idea is that i get a server of decent size, and a website to follow, the server would only be accessable by signing up on the website to play, the server would purely promote good teamwork, tactical play and general good sportsmanship with harsh punishment for people who break the rules.

This would in essence (hopefully) create a gaming enviroment that would be clean, friendly and support tactical play.

This would also allow a place for "non-claners" to come and experiance a higher level of game play.

I would like the opinion of the ns community as to whether this would be worth it?

Just get a couple of strict admins who kick for not teamplaying, problem solved.
I personally think spamming commchairs is worth a perm ban.

as but you would need a lot of admin to have them on 24/7
and its hard to keep track of alot of admins

but I still would like to see a good server like this

Would it work to give a bunch of regulars you trust some form of limited admin rights(IE kick all the way up to kickban for like a day at most or something)?

I vote linuxmonster(if you play on steam) almost all of the people there are competent players, and there are a few regular good comms. Most games are at least a good battle.

That beats the h3ll out of TIC-TAC-TOE my friend. Though I don't envy your being banned however. Still, you actually played NS in there.

BTW I forgot... They had a spray that was a tic-tac-toe board. But they all had it, so they didn't have X's or O's, so they shined their flashlights at specific areas to mark where they wanted their mark. And of course, they kept forgeting who claimed what areas. Thus the failing at playing tic tac toe.

If you guys want a change from the pub play, I would suggest you guys visit #nspug on gamesnet (IRC)

It's 6v6 "clan play", except the teams are made up of random people. So pretty much, you join the channel, sign up to play, and then join a server. Once you get in, you choose captains and pick teams, and then play a CAL-style 6v6 match (one alien and one marine round)

It's a *great* way to get experience, and since they're only pickup games (PUG), you'll get both a lot better competition without the seriousness of a real match.

In the matches, we even usually have 2-3 spectators who both watch and standby to substitute for anyone who gets disconnected or dropped out of the match.

So just swing on by, #nspug. good times for all

He is right about it being a friendly atmosphere but if you don't want to embarrass yourself due to lack of skill (I personally am an example) then be careful when you go in there. You get a lot of experience but you lose the side of PUB play where it is ok to make mistakes. At least that was my impression. When I played, I ended up feeling moderately guilty for my few usual bumbling errors, and I dislike that inherently.

But don't let that stop you PUB players out there, there are a lot of PUB converts, and it has got good reviews from a lot of people

I've noticed the same thing. People are just getting bored I guess. Marines are winning most of the games because the aliens are too lazy to build rt's or generally do anything. The truth is that there is so little to do when you are an alien. There are fades, onos, lerks... But if the whole team saves for higher lifeforms a) they don't get anything better than lerks because of the lack of rt's b) they die pretty soon because of the lack of upgrades and weapons. No-one wants to be a gorge because they get no kills, no glory and they usually end up decorating the walls in marine base as trophys. (Or trophies. Not sure which one or is that even a word in english )

I've had alot good games on finnish Auria Pelikaista -pubs, even though there are no admins present. Ever. You could say that the release of 2.0 screwed things up. The worst was that the mp_limitteams or something like that was by default set to 2. Most of the good players got irritated because of the uneven teams ans stopped playing there. Mostly only the newbies/idiots stayed. The good players that form 30% of the players are not enough to keep the game going and good.

Yes i have tried tactical gamer and overall its a good idea etc but imo it is too widespread accross the games and leaves some of them lacking in the quality of gameplay they boast about...

Also didnt this thread kinda derail somewhere along the line?

oops! Forgot to add i havent tried PUG's because i feel i don't have the skill that they may be looking for hence the afore-mentioned server would hopefully provide game play at that higher level of gaming usually reserved for PUG's and clan matchs to thoose public players who would (with the current state of public ns) ever experiance such a thing.

Just wanted to put in a good word for Tactical Gamer. I maintain the Tactical Gamer Natural Selection server (only one small piece of Tactical Gamer), and the server admins will and do kick players who are unable and/or unwilling to communicate/work with their team (microphones are preferred, but not required). We don't like kicking/banning players, and we try (very hard) to avoid it. But when it's all said and done, preserving the teamwork of the server is more important than keeping the one (or more) players who are preventing it. That, right there, means that our server is not for everyone. We have a dedicated, regular player base, some of whom don't play NS unless it's on our server, due to the very same teamwork-oriented frustrations outlined in this thread. We take our Natural Selection just a little bit more seriously than some people.

Nothing's perfect, and if you try hard enough, you'll find games on our server that aren't up to par. If you ask around enough, you'll find someone who thinks we're a bunch of morons who take the game too seriously. But if you play regularly on our server, and you truly appreciate solid planning and team-oriented play, you'll quickly learn what a rarity our server is. If your first visit doesn't leave a good impression, try coming back another night, perhaps when more regulars are playing. The players make the server, and TG's server is just another pub if the regulars aren't playing. Play there enough, and you'll learn who the regulars are. The server is often full in the evenings.

It's right there in the MOTD:

QUOTE

You play here with teamwork, or you don't play here at all. All skill levels are welcome.

To some people we're just another server. To some people we're the only server. To some people, we're somewhere in between. All I'm offering is an invitation for you to decide where you fit.

    Be well. Happy New Year.

This is exactly what the redphive server did. When it opened its doors to random pubbers tho, a bunch of nublets would register at the website and come in, acting like they were some sort of 1337 regular or something. Just keep the server private, and it should work out fine -- if you can manage to get a large enough following.

btw, all skill levels are welcome in pugs, if you're new, try gorging until you get the hang of scrims.

    p.s. coldnite: server bashing == bad + o/t == closed, let's prevent that .

well all the off-topic and shameless plugs aside, I think the original idea is good.

maybe it already exists or has been tried with lackluster results.. that's no reason not to have another or to try again, with "new management".

I would be interested in this server. but the signup process must strike a very specific balance between accessibility and exclusiveness. in order to keep a constant flow of "fresh blood" but also to keep the "griefers" at bay. =P

The server would be at first be public to get a player base and generally describe the basic ideals of the server, it would then after a sufficent player base migrate into a permanent "private" server requiring reserved slot gained through signing up on the website ( for free - although a trial period would be nessecary to stop multiple steams ids per person etc). Trusted players would have basic admin powers to generally manage the server when a higher admin is not online. Certain "events" would allow public players to experiance the server without sign up eg tuesday night public play... etc etc
