Oh Come On, No 3.0 Christmas Release?

You've got to be kidding me. I'm sure I'm not the only one that had their hopes pinned on 3.0 coming out on Christmas. It would have been the greatest gift of all.

There are way too many brainwashed flamers on this board yammering about how it'll be released "when it's done" and to stop asking.

But there are some problems with this.

Firstly, whether or not it's "done" is a subjective determination. 3.0 is not going to be perfect no matter how long we wait, and there are always going to be complaints about balance and changes in any release. People keep saying they would prefer a delayed release that is bug free and well balanced rather than an immediate release that is bugged and imbalanced. However, there are going to be bugs and imbalances whether the update is released now or a year from now. The fact is that a public release of the current 3.0 build with all its blemishes would be greatly appreciated by the vast majority of players. Minor bugs and balance problems are inevitable, expected, and can be worked out in minor future patches.

Secondly, NS players are entitled to pressure the developers to expedite the release. There's nothing wrong with wanting 3.0 to be released as soon as possible, and there's nothing wrong with pressuring the developers to hurry their progress. Saying it will be released when it's "done" does not address the issue of how hard the team is working to get it "done." I'm not saying the team isn't working hard, because frankly I don't know. I am saying, though, that the flayra fanboys telling those who ask when 3.0 is coming out to SUYF do a disservice to those of us who would like to see a timely release. If you want to know what happens when a project team isn't being pressured to hurry things along, look the way of the Deus Ex mod, Red Sun 2020. They began work on it relatively soon after Deus Ex came out, and have been working it ever since. Deus Ex 2 just came out, and their release date is still "when it's done." Pressure on developers to work dilegently is good, not bad.

There are many players, such as myself, who have quit NS until 3.0 is released. There is no good reason to further delay 3.0, and there are many good reasons to release it immediately. The community will be revived (game patches bring in new players and bring back old players, even if they are minor bug/balance fixes), students will be able to play over winter break, playtesting will be extended to a larger population, it would be a great holiday season gift to the community......I could go on but I don't think I need to.

3.0 could have and should have been released as a Christmas gift to the community. We need more people pressuring the developers to get the update out as soon as possible.

If 3.0 is released within the next hour I retract what I've said

i think they could make a annoucement about 3.0...even if its about a delay, or that it WONT be coming for 2003, i wouldnt mind. I just hope they dont let there release date (holidays 2003) slip by and say nothing...

    Are you really surprised?

If you are, I really do hate it fer ya. The Big Giant Heads themselves have been saying for a while now that that "holiday release" claim was going out the window.

I run a download site and I still didn't recieve confirmation that they will add me to the mailing list, proving that they aren't even planning on a recent release. Also, until the PR blitz starts, don't expect anything

    Secondly, it isn't done.

Even if the beta was released as is, you'd have NOBODY playing classic (For MORE then the infinite alien res bug.. YES it's still there.) and everyone playing combat for a few weeks, then getting bored of jp/onos rushes, and quitting the game entirely.

"When it's done" is NOT subjective. If you don't get the fact that there are still MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR bugs to be fixed, you shouldn't be writing essays on why it should be released.

We haven't had a beta patch in a little under ten days.. Usually it was every week on saturday, but heaven forbid Flayra take some time off from a stressful, near-thankless code-filled monitor to spend time with his family.

Go play Sven Coop or look at porn. It's better then whining on a message board about a version release that won't be released no matter how much you complain.

To be perfectly honest, while it was well written, it's rather obvious you don't have any clue about the fundamentals of game development.

Sure, people are waiting for 3.0's release, but I can assure you if it was released now a lot would quit the game and never come back.

Have patience... there are still major issues which needs to be addressed, and it won't help things saying "oh just release it ffs it will be fine you can patch it after that!".... look what happened with 2.0.

Even if 3.0 was released right now, other posts around this forum have stated that there are numerous bugs in 3.0. I, for one, would be extremely frustrated if I had to continuity download new patches to fix these bugs.

Living proof that you can be adroit(so laboriously pointed out by will. thank you, will.) with words and at the same time lack logic. [insert John Madden voice for kicks]Despite the holes, I'd give it a 6/6.5 out of 10. Perhaps being a little less verbose and a little more intelligent would help your argument. If you really can't read over what you wrote and see the apparent holes, I would be more than happy to cut them out individually from your post, show them to you, then explain the fallacy if indeed it needs explaining. Or, to save me the time and you the pain, you could put an edit in your post saying "THIS IS MY OPINION". I would be perfectly OK with that, so long as you recognize that your opinion is not the universal norm, and that not everyone adheres to your mentality. Other than those teeny-weeny technicalities, you brought up a good point: hamburgers are DEFINITELY tastier when grilled, not microwaved. All those opposing the grilling of hamburgers shall be punished upon sight! [insert shrill cackle here]

While, I'm not gonna clamor for 3.0 to be released or ask when its going to be released as i know there's no real answer to that, I do understand the people who make these threads frustration. The front page hinted at a holiday release which obviously isn't gonna happen. I think if progress reports were released to let the community who aren't in the playtest know what's happening (and no changelogs really don't cut it imo) most of these threads asking about the release date might dissappear.

Oh yeah you're right, there are absolutely no reasons not to release 3.0 right now...
Unless of course you count lperformance issues (especially linux), crashes, bugs in the resource system, some missing menu icons, balance problems both in NS and NS:C and tons of "smaller" bugs and problems as reasons.

As SuB already pointed out you seem to have no clue about game development.
3.0 neither COULD nor SHOULD have been released on christmas and it was quite obvious that it would not be released, so stop complaining.

If you want a good and playable game with a minimum of bugs and features that WORK then please, for the love of what ever you believe in, be patient and stop spitting out senseless stuff like "We need more people to preassure the developers".

Also, "When it's done" is not subjective but determins a state of the game where all new features are implemented, work without problems, the gameplay has a basic balance, the interface is complete and so on. I highly doubt you would want a game where a lot of feature do not work properly.. unless of course you enjoy creating a new flame thread for every problem you encounter when playing an unfinished version.

So, again, be patient and play some 2.01, wich is quite fun and has, with small exceptions, a great balance and stop complaining.

Seriously...these people who are making the game have a outside life, so expect it to have delay and try to extend the patience of yours, no offense...even if we dont get this on Christmas, we still should thank the creators for the hard work they put through the whole year for us NS freaks out here...

    Opinion Ended...
no pressure for the Creators from me =)

Ehm sorry to be rude here but I have but one thing to say to you:

    Constellation

Unless you're a paying member you really don't have squat to "demand" from the devs.
This sounds harsher than I mean it but it goes for a lot of people out there constantly whining "Oooh they suck 3.0 isn't here yet! Flayra sucks!" and more of that crap. Well if they'd paid the fee they would have it by now.

But I *HAVE* to agree on the point you made about "making it bug free and balancing". It is indeed true that no matter what game you take, there is always a patch shortly after the release to fix balancing issues.
Look at WC3, HL, UT, UT2k3 and so many more.

But I really don't feel the dev team owes anyone anything.

    Just my 2c,

    ME!

You have't played Master Sword, have you...

We were literally forced to release one day in January after Christmas. I was working like mad the last day. I kept getting questions on MSN, forum PM's and IRC PM's, I was almost going out of my mind, only because we said the release date.

Don't push developers for a release date. Unless you've worked on a game before, you have no idea how hard it actually is.
I'm starting to think people are forgetting Flayra celebrates Christmas too. (He does, doesn't he?).

I don't care when 3.0 is released. Of course I care WHEN it's released, but I don't expect it at any time. 2.0 is fine by me.

I'm betting on an early January release. I also bet the reason it wasn't released over Christmas was perhaps because of coordination issues, lots of people travelling or doing other stuff. And I am very sure the NS team, despite their dedication, wasnt going to sit around infront of a computer on Christmas of all days dealing with a continuous stream of messages and inquiries.

Yeah, would be nice if we could get it, but theres alot more to it then simply hitting a button and getting a 100MB+ file mirrored across a dozen sites and making sure one of them dosen't post it early. Not to mention that major file sites such as Fileplanet probably gave many of their employees the day off and weren't in any condition to handle the server load.

Considering once 3.0 goes final, it'll be given full Steam support. That means automatic updating and even less work for you to do. But you'll still complain about patches then too, I'm sure. Might as well get ready for a few patches once it goes final or you'll never be able to make it.

I was hoping to wait until NS 3.0 came out to perhaps return to playing NS. But reading up on the state it's in, I'm perfectly fine waiting for a (long) while for it to be perfected. I finally did the deed and installed 2.0 to Steam, and besides the GUI issues it runs fine.

It's still nice to know that people still insist an early release is better (see: 1.1, I mean, 2.0). With the "bugs" that people are stating I'd much rather wait another month or four for a release date, holidays or no. Nice thought, though.
