Welcome to the forums!

Marines can research motion tracking, which will mark all out-of-sight, moving aliens with a blue reticle.

Please read up at Natural-Selection.org and The Readyroom - I think you'll find a lot of potential questions answered there. Have fun posting, and watch out for skulk ambushes.

Other guidelines for new posters are to never ever ask when its out (do this on the irc channel called #naturalselection on gamesnet). Oh, and bow to flayra alot.

Does this magic blue retical even apear through walls? And what is its range?
• coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Yes, it appears through walls.

The range is essentially the entire map.

...So from any point, a motion-tracker equipped marine can see every alien in every location in all parts of the map in his LoV? I think I'm misinterpreting here...

Do the aliens have a similar upgrade, or does Hive Mind more than make up for it?

Do the marines have an upgrade where they can see the locations of their fellow marines, like the aliens can?

No, that's not true Coil. It will appear for aliens in the same room as you, even if you can see them. There's a small 'update period' for the motion tracking, so it gives you more of a general idea of where to look and try and find the alien when it's in the same room as you. So a flier zooming around the room will still be able to be located using the motion tracking sprite that will appear every short while.

Once motion tracking is researched, marines can see any moving aliens, and hive locations. They can also see buildings and webs in very close proximity (like, around a corner). However, all of these are indicated by the same sprite - a marine cannot tell whether an approaching alien is a skulk or an onos. Hives can generally be differentiated because although they use the same sprite, they never move. Marines cannot see each other.

Aliens can see ALL their brethren and active hives at all times, including name and location. They are also notified when any alien or structure comes under attack. They can see any marines visible to any other alien (or a sensory chamber), and can parasite marines to make them always show up in hive sight. Scent of fear marks any marine with less than 100 health.

Doesn't that get a little congested? Almost sounds like it would be hard to see the level for all the little dots everywhere.

Well, since maps are 360 degrees around you, you generally only see 4-5 things on your screen max at once. It also has a max fraw distance, so if your buddy is clear across the map, you likely won't see em.

To avoid hive-sight clutter, the only name and location displayed is that of the hive-sight sprite closest to your crosshair. So if you scan across the map, every time your crosshair comes near a sprite you will see who it is and where they are. Beautiful system.

Not quite. In typical board fashion, your original question has been horribly mutated. Heh.

Basically, everyone is now discussing both marine motion tracking, and alien Hive sight. The aliens spawn into the game with the ability to see teammates, buildings, and enemies that are parasited or in line of sight of a teammate, all through walls. The marines have motion tracking, which shows only enemies, and must be researched before it can be used.

Hope this was a bit more clear!

I was kind of hoping the tracker would be Aliens-style and add something to your HUD or something... guess that would be too AvP2-ish... unless they made it an item you pulled out, and the tracker is actually on the model... hmm...
