Marine Traning Center

<div class="IPBDescription">A Mapping Idea</div> Ok, I got to thinking that it would be a good idea if some one made a map made after a Marine Traning Center. It would obviously take place on some sort of firgate and would incluse things like class rooms, shooting ranges, ect. Imagin walking into a shooting range with kharra cut outs and suddenly one of thoses cut outs lunges foward and attacks you. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> And among other things, you could see destroyed marine buldings, or a real armory room (of course you couldnt take the guns due to balance reasons). Or prehapse in one of the class rooms it is still showing a traning video that plays "In the even of Onos. Press F4!". Ect

I realy hope some one takes on this idea. Thanks for reading <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Rumour has it that there's a training map already done, but the required scripting code isn't implemented. I started my own training map a while back along with a custom plugin that allowed me to spawn buildings and give waypoints, etc. The map's pretty plain (I'm a coder, not a mapper), but it featured a working airlock (except for the damn particle systems). Once you got into the map, a voice-over described the waypoint system and gave examples. It also explained resource towers and let the player build a spawned armoury. It was going to have spawning welders, target practice and a "combat sim" using modified whichbots, but I never got around to finishing it. If anyone wants to look it over, let me know.

Oh no, not a map to train new players, but a traning center that the TSA has to clean out due to infestation. Sorry about the confusion <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

prsearle you should finsih that map or get some one to finish it i bet you could submit it to the NS team and they could probably put it in

Naturally hand it over to one of the mapping Gurus around here for touch ups and such <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    That would be great, Frigates rule <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I've dumped everything into a zip file; if you just want the map, it's <a href='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pr.searle/testns/marine1.zip' target='_blank'>here</a>. The map itself is nowhere near complete and only has a couple of rooms. It's based on the first level of Half-Life: Uplink. If you want to try the actual tutorial out, create a copy of your ns directory called half-life/nstut/, then extract the zip over it. There should be metamod, liblist.gam, a script file and the plugin DLL as well as the maps and sounds. Then, use the following command line:
    hl.exe -game nstut -listen +map marine1

When the level starts, the voice-over should start automatically. Before it finishes, make sure you type "prs_load_tutorial" in the console, or the waypoints won't load properly. The tutorial itself isn't complete; I needed to add in a "structure built" trigger before I could get the welder spawn working.

    The tutorial: <a href='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pr.searle/testns/nstut.zip' target='_blank'>nstut.zip</a>

I played Twisted Hazard Course today, so I thought I'd dig this topic up.

I couldn't get your training to work a few weeks ago when this topic first popped up, and I wanted to try it again, when it comes to the loading screen, it just quits. :/

If I can get this working I might work on an either real nice looking training map or a mock one.

It seems I forgot to include tutorial.wad in the zip files; I've replaced them with fixed versions. The map itself should load into a standard NS install once the .wad is in the right place.

co_daimos is a training center... I guess. That's what it says on the voice thing in the readyroom.

But it doesn't actually train you. NOOB!

    Just kidding, <3

    Edit:
Still doesn't work for me...crashes when I load it. :/ It sucks, because I really want to play this.

The map itself is just a standard NS map, so you could try installing the bsp and wad files in your regular NS directory. If it doesn't work then, then you could try compiling it yourself (the .map file should be ncluded as well).

    Ok, got it to load.

When I get to the build the armory part, though, I build it and then nothing happens.

Anyway, doing a full compile of the map right now.

    Edit:
Sometimes when I do prs_load_turorial I get an abnormal program termination, btw.

Yeah, I didn't get around to finishing the "building completed" trigger. When the armoury was completed, it was going to spawn a welder and have you weld through the lift doors. That's really as far as the map goes. If there's enough interest, I could finish off the training plugin (more flexible trigger system, more stuff to spawn, etc).

Yeah, I just played it, I really like that. Nice job <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I might try and design my own, now that I see yours, just to see what I can come up with. You really should finish the project, I'm sick of teaching my friends how to play NS.

Both the Original idea and the Newbie Training center sound great... so all those uber noobers can get better and smarter and more better-ness... I think there should also be a squad team-work training map too...

Too bad that ns has NO support whatsoever for an AI for the different aliens/rines like they do in HL/OP-FOR/BS

Lol BS means Blue Shift... the rarely known expansion pack that I love

That is true, one of the original mappers had the training map all built but there was no scripting. It was then used by Flayra to test different coding and I believe he tried a little AI on it.
