Size Of The New Version?

If im not wrong i think ns3.0 will be steam only so i think there will not be any file updating form vs 2.0 to 3.0. Wich means we have to dl a file with a full 3.0 install.
My question is simple and i think someone can awser it too. What will be the file size?? I know some constelations members already play the beta and i think they needed to download the inntalation file from somewhere so they probably have some idea what will be the file size. TX

Full builds range from 145-150 megs.

Edit: This could be more or less (More most likely) since we don't have the server .dlls, or ns_nancy.

It will be 17gb and will only be downloadable at 3.47kb/s.

Does anyone know if the lastest version will be cleaned up at all eg: removing useless code etc.??

And will you have to download both NS and NS:combat in one go or will they be gotten seperately??

Normal NS and NS:C will be one download.

There is never any useless code in a compiled executable (or anything complied for that matter), all code that is not used is commented out, and is ignored by the complier.

I would guess the new version is quite a bit larger than version 2.0 because of all the co maps that have been added, and any extra ns maps, a conservative estimate would be 160 meg.

    160 megs IS exceedingly conservative.

    I'd love to start a pool.. Put down five bucks and you get a guess.. if it's within 5 megs of your guess, you win the pot? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I say 200 megs.. who's with me? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Don't lie. It's only 10 gigs.

Not really. For example, if you're debugging an application, you'll be compiling it in debug mode, which will quickly make the exe file grow to enormous proportions compared to the normal size because of all the added debugging information, and it is perfectly possible there are code snippets that aren't used anymore. They'll still be included in the final compile.

But I disgress, the issue of the size of a distribution is seldom set by the executable files, but rather by the art. For example, NS 3.0 will include ns2.wad, which is 11 megabytes uncompressed. There are six new combat maps according to the front page, each will probably be around five megabytes, give or take some, uncompressed, of course. There's probably some new sounds and sprites. They don't take nearly as much data as the binary space trees, though. There's at least 2-3 new normal mode maps, and given the quality of the old ones, I'm sure they will keep most of the old ones, with slight updates, of course.

Now. ns2.wad is allready available and weighs in at about nine megabytes compressed. As for the maps, I'd say around 7-8 new maps. BSP's compresses reasonably well, so I'd say about 2 mega per map compressed.

In other words, about 25 megabytes on top of the current NS distribution, which is 119 megabytes, giving a grand total of roughly 145 megabytes, more if more large files are added, of course.

Hmm I would have thought it would be very large compared to 2.0 because of the fact that it is the regular ns + combat, and new maps, but the smaller the better, so I can play it sooner after it comes out. I am just worried about how these servers will hold up from all the dling, because the demand for this is off the charts.

Every copy of Natural Selection 3.0 comes with your very own home version of the Internet.

So yeah, it'll take a while.

Well the last full DL we had to do was 2.1q (I think) and it was 145 some odd megs if I remember. Alot has been added since than. I think the final NS 3.0 will be about 160-165MBs.

It's not the size i'm worried about, i hope we can download a cache type version. Steam is ok, but scary downloading games. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's not the size of the file but how you use it that counts. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ok, first...

FileSize is 100MB +.... it's not fully done, or fully tested.. bugreports looks like it's got a ways to go before it's done.. so nobody can put a finger on it...

    Second,

Flayra has said publically that he would LIKE to see Nancy back in the game, but has not requisitioned a mapper/team of mappers to do so... the current "remake" has been stated as "beutiful" by flayra, but also "it probably wont be done in time for 3.0"... also by flayra himself.

    Third,

Combat AND Normal NS will not be available for seperate downloads, the only difference is in coding and maps... therefore making it useless to seperate them.

    Fourth,

the rest is speculation, therefore making all other posts ON or IN this topic spam, and to that end, i am locking this topic.
