Hand-drawn Short Cartoon

This is work I have done for University and it has taken me a long time to do (this is my first attempt of doing an animation of this scale). Here's a run down of what work is envolved:

- Drew 53 seperate drawings (also involved figuring out how it's going to animate). Also had to make sure all the lines match up to the previous drawing using a lightbox.
- Took a snapshot of each drawing, saved as .jpeg
- Put into Flash, arranged and doubled some frames (e.g. head nods, walk)
- Added blinks
- Added sound
- Added mouths and lip synced them to the audio
- Repeatedly tested it over and over

It runs at 12 frames a second and it's about 10 seconds long, so it's around 120 frames big.

Anyway, here it is

    ok, a few notes...

FileSize --> You can cut back the 1.2 megs if you DONT do exactally what you did... a jpeg inside of a flash is NOT a good idea... sure, compression + compression = compressed^2.. right? but not with flash... you can rasterize the images, and erase the "white" of your scans... because those take up memory, without those, you've got a smaller file.

and even yet, you could go all-digital, and get an even smaller filesize... but that's a little tediuos...

    Animation Techniques
Principals --> you've got nice followthrough and Squah-n-Stretch, but your lacking in anticipation, recoil and Movement Scales.

Anticipation ---> your hand moves "up" before it moves "down"... this is absent shen he's turning... should be slight, but still there.

Recoil ---> you'de imagine that when the hat hits the ground, it would squash and "spring" back up... the sides of the hat doesn't show this spring, and neither does the movement, but that's the next point i'm about to make...

Movement Scales ---> i'de assume you've at least seen these little animation tools... they LOOK like a ruler, but aren't. usually, they are in a "1/3" scale... to do this in a cheap way, grab your ruler, and draw a line, but two vertical "ends" on that line... now start by deviding the area into 1/3, make a mark, and another vertical line... choose the direction you want it at.. and repete...

SHOULD look somethine like this: |......|......|....|....|...|.|| i've got my guy "running" <---- that direction...

Movement Scales 2 ----> there's another one that you use... it's for "stopping" this one is the same as above but at 1/4 scale...

other than that, awsome, good luck at uni!

heh, nice. that's pretty much what I had to do for my final project in my 2d animation calss, except ours have to be 15 seconds long and I used Spawn as my subject.

Er... don't think that's Hamtaro. It's Ebichu, if I'm not mistaken... the much nastier original basis for Hamtaro. Recognize it from the intro sequence. Definitely a fun series, though not for kids.

Your knowledge of creepy anime scares me...

I have also watched ebichu, and it was so terrible apparently they almost didn't let it on prime-time in japan, which tells you somthing about the series, but I degress AND pull this thread off topic.

What I want to know is why did you use flash?

    Hey, thanks for the comments

I'm not doing an animation course so I haven't been taught in a great deal about these things. I used the idea of squash and stretch as best I could. Some of my drawings were drawn at home without a lightbox because the animation labs were packed full. If I ever do any more Delarosa, I will remember what you said, thanks I am doing a computer 2D animation lesson next semester so it could be handy

I was going to use .avi and import it into Premiere... But my friend said when you save as .avi from the line-test machine it skipped some frames (probably framerate problems between the .avi and editing program). Flash is used for quite a few animations and our animation teacher reccomended it for this project. Putting it on the Internet was an afterthought, but I thought it would be interesting to see what you all think

    Thanks again

Edit: Thanks for the ava/sig comments hehehe

I personally have never seen flashed used in this manner before. I personally don't see the problem with premier, but that's just me I suppose.
