Ns popularity

How many people will play this?
Where do you think the apex of the mountain we know as NS popularity will lie?

A)1-100 Servers
B)101-300 Servers
C)301-600 Servers
D)601-1200 Servers
E)1201-5000+

I bet A.

Not because the mod isnt good or something, but the average person did not buy HL to play a RTS. Not to mention its hard to get MODs popular these days. Look at how DoD is doing, and its much more fun than CS is (IMHO).

FLF was destroyed by one release, now its at the A range, when it could have made it to C- Range.

I Don't honestly know, this is just an opinionated estimate.

I hope it makes it to C, and not a server over.

(EDIT: This is about the apex (peak) of the popularity, but the posts regarding the formation of the population line graph are still appreciated.)

I say A because I think most people(with this MOD) will want to join a server with more people. But it'll evantually snowball to something like E, but time will tell.

I've got my money on NS landing in the D zone. Nothing will overtake CS for a long time but I think NS'll come close.

    B. DoD is a good gauge of a mod that takes more thought than just run around and shoot.

First of, I'm pretty sure DoD is more in the C range, that being said I'm guessing for week 1-8 we'll see it an the A range, then it will gradually grow to somewhere around the C-D range

I'm little more optimistic about the #, (and worried about the amount of llamas atracted to such a mass of ppl) I mean we've gotten FREE not asked for pimpage on PA, I see mention in NS in many a PHL mail bag. We're already sorta famous and we're not out yet, MonsE hasn't done his real big PR blitz. Just think of how many people will at least try for a couple days. I think for the first week we'll have to worry more about finding that all 1000+ servers are full.

    First Week?

You do realize that would be a catastrophic amount of downloads from File Planet?

    I can just see it:

    xferla4.fileplanet.com:
    Wait: 41917 Minutes
    Current People: 300/300
You are 12381236 out of 12381236 in line

Or you could just get a bunch of 404 errors if you go anywhere else.

There are more mirrors on the planet than filplanet. For example, Gaming Razor.

I would say NS in the first weeks would be in the A range then slowly grow.

FYI, I play TFC a lot I am sure that TFC is also in the E range. Just that only about 600 servers are really worth playing on.

FireArms, Front Line Force, etc, etc all look completely, totally amateur in comparison to Natural Selection. Even Day of Defeat isn't pushing the limits like Natural Selection is.

NS and it's amazing team have taken an out dated engine made it look impressive even by todays tough standards. They've taken the 2 most popular PC genres and combined them into one game that appeals to you no matter what kind of gameplay you enjoy. This isn't some little "realisitc" military mod, this isn't merely some capture the flag, capture the point, the radio, the scientist, the cow, etc, etc. This game has totally unique gameplay. These guys know what they're doing, look at how popular it is now before even the big "PR-blitz" occurs. People are noticing this MOD and once it's finally out we can almost be sure that it's going to blow these small time mods out of the water. If this game pulls off half the stuff they're claiming and is as fun as it looks and sounds, I'd say it will have no trouble making it to "C" territory. I doubt it will be a CS killer simply because it has a firm grip on the Half-Life community, but I think it will easily blow other MODS away. And whoever said it will be "A" for the first week: Mods get the most attention the first few days of release, not the least.

MonsE has at least a dozen confirmed mirrors for release, and is waiting to hear from over 20 others.

NS is too good to get the attention it deserves. Which says something about CS...

I'd say A range. How many people really want to run a server, when they could play on someone else's? And then I can see many of those "1337 H4x0rz" being chased away because they have the attention span of a rock, are half as smart, and will be unable to grasp the simple concept of teamwork as marines, and will hate aliens because they have no guns.

Too bad the popularity of a mod is usually inversely proportional to the IQ of the players...
  • AndrewAndrew Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1366Members
I vote B. NS has the most awesome potential of any mod I have EVER seen, but the stupidity of the l33t CS players will prevent them from liking it. IMHO, thats a good thing; less stupid people.

I´d say A or B. But it doesn´t matter to me. All I need is one server with less than 200 ping. And maybe someone besides me there.

As much as most of you hate gamespy, they do have one good use, take a peek here for some realtime stats on various Half-Life Mods.

DoD and TFC have around 1000 range in servers.

I expect the A range on the number of servers for the first week. This being because it's gonna take time for everyone to download and get NS setup on their server. Then the number of servers will just keep climbing. My guess is that there will eventually reach 1000 servers.
  • Res1Res1 Join Date: 2002-08-18 Member: 1187Members
I don't think NS will be able to reach up to the number of servers/players CS has because of 1 reason. 1. CS is promoted in a lot of major lans where you can win lots of money, ie. cpl. Right now CS holds a lot of the hardcore gamers in the world. A lot of lans are strictly FPS games, I don't think a RTS + FPS like NS would be percieved too well at these lans. Of course.. you never know until you try

You guys are overlooking an important fact.... The people who have and run servers are intelligent people, and NS's appeal is certainly to an intelligent crowd. I think every server op who plays or eveb sees one decent game is going to want to run it. But thats just my oppinion. NS WILL BE HUGE, GET READY FOR IT.

dont even compare with cs. cs when first released was TINY! barely any servers. cs has got so many servers thru going retail AND being released for OVER 1+ years
  • SuperMunchkinSuperMunchkin Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1364Members
Necro makes a good point. NS is getting a lot of attention for being a non-retail/not released yet game. Once the said PR blitz happens.. I imagine the attention directed here will spike dramatically.

Yeah, I'd say starting off at A, then moving to B or C once all of us here start getting it and probably to D once we all have it.

Geez guys, considering all their hardwork I'm sure it's flattering hearing all of you say there will be a 100 or less servers playing their mod when there are over 24,000 servers being run right now for Half-Life.

While I agree that NS will start in the A/B region, I think that from what the Playtester stories are showing us NS is going to be the best way for a clan to prove just how good it is. So I can see NS being as much used in tournaments as CS, even more so later on. And with that would come even more publicity so NS could move up to C/D.
