Reasons why it was picked?
I'd like to know the reason why ns_lost was picked as an official map.
I played it before it got official, and it never appealed to me. It was just an average custom map.

I respect the mapper who made (well, not really by making a thread like this), but in my opinion, it doesn't par up with the rest of the maps.
To my own depression, I avoid servers running ns_lost.

I must admit out of all the maps its the only one that really needs a lot more diversity. I like the map just it really gets boring when the level doesnt seem to change much.

I can never remember which one is which. Somebody refresh my memory as to the location names in Lost?

    Equilibrium, Alpha, Cargo.

Also key locations as Temp control and Paranoias.

    I love Lost

I too avoid lost, mostly because it seems to be the most anti-marine map out there. Atleast in Hera marines stand a good chance if the relocate.

It's the most 'anti-marine' map because it's simply too dark, like ns_nancy was. 90% of the map is just too dark for marines to aim properly, and thus -also- a bit boring (no details). Unlike Nancy, Lost doesn't really have any "important" locations: Hera has holo room, Eclipse has several important locations, and Nancy had mess hall. To me, Lost feels just "generic" and dull -the reason why I don't play on it very much.

As a constructive suggestion, I would add some open areas to the map: something like the marine start RT in Hera... Heh, name it "Glassdome." Also, adding one or two a bit brighter/more contrasted areas would make the map a lot better right away (like that light pillar in atmos -ns_bast)

    Uhh...

    What?

I don't remember making another post to this topic.

PS: Ah yeah, Alpha! I love Lost, too! Excellent map.

PPS: Lost has no important locations? Hello! Temp Con, Alpha (not just because it's a hive) the IAD, if the 'rines want to mess with that place, Los Paranoias, to a smaller extent. I'll admit it is lower-strategy than some of the other maps, but it does have some serious chokepoints, most notably Temp Con.

overall i agree very much, i gernally hate the map from a personal as well as objective perspective, it's just simply not that good.

but, if their hive is alpha, temp control is the important room. if you can lock that down as rine, you have direct access to equ/cargo

PS: Reasons why it was picked? because greedo is buddy buddy with some of the higher ups. thats the only reason

I understand 100% why it was picked -- It has a lovely gritty feeling to it and fits the atmosphere perfectly. Some tweaks could be made to make it a bit more marine friendly, but it looks great.

It deserves its name well... it takes quite a while to know the plan perfectly. Marines get lost in corridors , aliens get lost in vents.

This map has to be one of the most sensory friendly , nice spots for them everywhere. Hives are easy to siege and to JP rush , while not being good relocation spots. This map truly encourages creative relocations at strategic places such as Los and Temp Control. Phase gates are really important here.

I think lost is one of the most fun maps to play at the moment.

While it doesn't compete with eclipse, viel, origin, it's not far behind. My main beef is that it's so freaking difficult for marines to get to temperture control, making map control with marines nearly impossible.

I've got no problems with lost, but I can't begin to understand why bast is still around. I'll save that for another thread, though.

I got a problem with Bast however, it's _teh_ most anti-marine map of all.
  • Roger_DodgerRoger_Dodger Join Date: 2003-03-11 Member: 14392Members
Dont you people find it rather boring though? I mean look at bast the diversity between areas is great, Hera is also very different, caged isn't as different but it has quite easy to remember areas coz they arent all that similar, Eclipse although is similar in many of its halls is very broken up with looks when nearing hives, Origin is quite like bast in diversity, tanith is also very memorable and diverse, veil is quite boring though good map , mineshaft is a bit boring also but is appropriate for the map and nothing well the hives are so very different but the halls all look so similar.

It is "anti marine" mainly because it has small and narrow hallways, which makes it skulk territory.

Yes it is a bit uniform in design but It has plenty of strategic areas on it, so that critisism is more an indication of you not understanding the map. The name is somewhat ironic actually I find, if you just check out a 2D map of it you learn it a lot quicker then many others.

Agreed. It's TINY, and 'rine start is a deathtrap because of that retarded vent that doesn't keep projectiles out.

_Teh_ most anti-marine has to be Hera, though. Marine start in that thing takes the farkin' cake, and the place where most commanders relocate to, (out of sadism?) unless they tag reception, which is a slow deathtrap, is dark, confusing, hard to manuver in, hazardous, difficult to defend, and just generally a dream location for the aliens. It is, of course, a hive location.

Hera is pretty, and it's imaginative, and it's even a pretty decent size, but it is majorly broken. I never even saw most of it before I started avoiding it, because marines get owned too much to go to many of the most interesting locales.

    I really like ns_lost.

Avoid map bashing as much as you can, the creators worked long and hard and every map adds to NS' diversity.

If a map is genuinely bad, it's not bashing to say so. I recognize that Hera took alot of work. You can tell that by looking at it, and walking through it. It is very finely detailed, and a beautiful example of the craft. It's wonderful as an art piece, something to look at and admire.

But it's terrible to play Natural Selection in.

My only problem with Lost is that huge corridor that goes from marines start to parananois. It's so out of character from the rest of the map, it feels like it's just there to take up space. If that hallway could be reworked I think it'd be a great map, maybe it could have a small passage way to temp control also...

    Uhh...

Which people are you responding to?

If you're talking about me, no. Lost has fine gameplay, and certain aspects of the atmosphere are excellent. It doesn't really have a major problem in either respect, though I admit it's not the best in them, either.

As for Hera, that's a beautiful atmospheric piece, with horrid gameplay.

I think there is nothing at all wrong with ns_lost. It has its share of open spaces and tight corridors, the lack of a double res makes it more alien friendly, but the several easily defendable marine location spots makes it good for marines too.
IMO, hera IS the most unbalanced, I do agree with 007Bistromath. The hive locations are too broken up; there aren't enough flat surfaces, and the corridors leading out from marine start are too narrow for that essential relocation march.
    My favourite map overall? ns_origin.

Definitely. The most cinematic map of all. They really nailed both the atmosphere and the gameplay in that one. It's absolutely beautiful, and every point on the map is contestable by either side. No matter how much stuff you have in one place, it's hard to say that it's truely locked in for your team, but it manages to strike that balance without making it an endless festival of turnover.

My personal favorite is definitely ns_tanith, though. Hard for me to nail down exactly why. I like the way the mechanics are so flexible on that map. There's so many different plans you can do that work. There's plenty for your resident maintenance guy to do, as I believe it has more weldables than any other map. (Damned crying shame that they're making the one in the water unweldable, but at least we'll be able to seal up that one over the crates that makes double res such a spore trap.) Also, it's a map with more meaningful battle lines than other maps, I think. What I mean to say by that is that strategy isn't so much dependent on the actual construction of the map, but the placement of things. How close is your target location to X hive? The backdoor to SatComm was pure genius, in terms of both looks and gameplay. As far as how the rest of it looks, I can see some places to improve, but it's definitely very nice as is. Better than ns_nothing anyway, where the closest thing to a scenic vista is Viaduct. (Not ragging on the map itself at all; ns_nothing is excellent from a gameplay standpoint. But it isn't much to look at. Pretty much an anti-hera.)
  • WingZeroWingZero Join Date: 2003-12-16 Member: 24448Members
Heh I always thought Hera was one of most marine friendly maps. Most comms relocate to Hera and from there they can siege holo giving rines the double res. From hera they also have easy access to one of the hives. Theres even a spot on the map from which you can siege two hives.

Hehe ns_Lost, I always go aliens on that map .

Nancy was a **** for marines there has never been a bigger deathtrap that that frieken mess hall room, it was awful, I hated going into that damn room skulks could get ya from like 5 different spots.

I don't think I've ever played nancy, you know. Everybody seems to talk about it, but it's not on the rotation for any of the servers I've ever been to. Or if it was, I missed it.

thats because nancy was removed because it couldnt b udated with the onos hulls, 'cause if im right the source was loss, same with bass but it didnt have onos problems.. and there was a third map... But i loved nancy, and to get on topic...

Lost Is good, it has its vital areas, like temp control and some others. And it isnt that dark. It's my second favorite map.. mainly cause its a challange for rines unless they reloc to alpha or equil pretty much

I like ns_lost. The map I really don't like is ns_mineshaft and that's mostly because I still get lost in it and have to use my auto map. But really, none of the maps are horrid, and I can't wait to try the new maps in 3.0.
