I'm 99 percent certain that CSPORTS.net tracks the unique players and not the nicknames. If they tracked the nicknames the last 31 days - their servers would get overloaded. Must be billions of different nicknames, right? I'v mailed them though, just to be sure.

TFC may need teamwork but when I play it usually doesn't involve it at all. In NS you must have teamwork if you want to even have a chance of gettin a win.

Whoa.. joined the day NS came out and yet managed to stay a forum lurker all these long months until today?
NS is more fun than TFC - but seems to take longer for people to get 'into'.
For me... well, I always used to be the guy in TFC that was constantly retrieving ammo from those strange dispensers the engies could build, I just loved constantly being full of ammo, so much POTENTIAL destruction, it was a shame to actually shoot at anyone.
And then along came NS. With the ARMORY!!!!!!!!!!
<3 Armories.
I just hate it when some skulk comes and makes me waste the ammo I have been hoarding so carefully.
So nobody pointed out the fact that 90% of the TFC servers are filled with Foxbots?
I feel so ashamed. In my eyes, NS is on top CS ain't really that bad, it's the players who make it bad. TFC has been going down and will keep going down over the next few months. This is coming from a guy who played nothing but TFC for over 3 years and loved it every single moment. But then valve nerfed concing, then they nerfed conc skimming, and it just got boring as hell after that. Attackers go medic, conc around a bit, get blown up by soldiers who can't aim their rockets and throw every single one of their grenades at you, rinse and repeat to insanity. I came from the European community, and have watched as over the last year more and more of the top clans (=BC= arguably as good as any of the top American clans) died off. Pubs still have about the same amount of players but there's lesser pubs because most of the best ones were ran by those good clans that folded. GSP are less likely to provide servers for it (at least in Europe) because the leagues are so unstable atm with a clan folding almost daily. I imagine the same thing is happening on the same scale here in the US now, tho I rarely paid attention to it when I was in Europe.
Anyway, long story short, TFC is going down, NS will definately go up in 3.0 (it's looking damn good!). So in all probability NS will certainly surpass and stay above TFC in the near future. Dunno about DoD, played it a bit but to me it seems like CS without buying and set in WW2

Hopefully in v3.0 rogue gorges who plant sc or mc or dc will not be ridiculed and anyone will appreciate just the fact someone stopped res whor1ng and managed to get 3 chambers down.
As for braindead mods ricochet takes the cake!!
As for overtaking TFC no worries there the challenge will be holding lastability. Im guessing NS: Combat will be the one to keep it passed TFC.
No really. So that means, it being brainless, I can go into a random pub and start beating everyone? Who would have thought aim, map knowledge, recoil control, tactical disposition mattered? BECAUSE ITS BRAINLESS RIGHT??? AND NS IS SO COOL WHEN YOU GET TO GO ONOS AND DEVOUR HELPLESS LITTLE MARINES BY RUNNING IN A STRAIGHT LINE TAKING FIRE AND NOT DYING!!!!

TFC is a great mod but nowadays there are only few public servers filled with players (at least in europe - compared to NS). There are many clans and clan matches going on so TFC is not yet dead. It requires teamplay, without it you won't get any flags out of my base
Anyways I think NS 3.0 will increase player number significantly. Just think about it, there will be another game listed and you don't have to do anything but click "play the game"
But it is a shame, I don't know any TFC players who like NS
TFC took a big hit when leagues required steam. A lot of the community stopped playing after that, because they couldn't get it to work, or because of the FPS hits they took when they used it. I quit playing TFC shortly after steam came out, it was too frustrating. My computer isn't that hot, and fewer fps just clinched it for me. I've been clanning in TFC for 4 yrs, and I'm technically still in a clan, but I don't play much. TFC players are turning to other games, like NS. :-] I'm confident that NS will have more pubbers than TFC in 2004
The patch with the new netcode ruined TFC and the skill that accompanied it. Nowadays the top levels are just gren and shotty **** Soldiers on defense (with the occasional no-skill-HWG) and gren **** medics on offense...
When 2.0 came out, for a while we had more players than DoD, we than fell back into 3rd and than down to 4th where we have been for a long time.
I have a very strong feeling that with the right amount of PR and the fact that we are going to Steam with 3.0, that we will take back the 3rd place spot where we are ment to be!
Maybe one day we will be holding 2nd all the time, but I think that may not happen before HL2 comes out.
Once HL2 comes out we most likly will have a 3rd place spot due to the amount of players who will move over to HL2 and forget that HL1 was even made.
Regarding those numbers I mentioned earlier... It seems I was wrong. I mailed and asked them, and they actually count the amount of unique player names. So 10 000 people named "Player" will be counted as one. I don't know why they let people view these numbers, as they doesn't say much. A game where you can change your name easy (like HLDM) will get more names counted and therefor look larger than a game where it's harder to change name (Natural Selection, Counter-Strike). Here are the mails I sent to Edward Watson on CSPORTS.net, and his answers...
My first mail:
With "NAMES IN 31 DAYS" you mean (unique) players, yes?
The answer from CSPORTS.net:
No we mean unique player names in the last 31 days :-)
My second mail:
Uhm, alright...
So if there are 10 000 guys named r0d3nt they will be counted as one? And if someone changes nickname from "asdfxxxxxxxxx" to "lkjhooooo" - that player will be counted as two? Who wants to know the amount if nicknames anyhow? I suppose I didn't get it. Please clarify.. ;-)
The second answer mail:
Nope you got it. Yes if there are 1,000 people called Player and there are 1,000 extra names or aliases then they will cancel each other out. I am sure this is not the case for every game as it depends on the age of the game.
If you have access to a server and want to do the analysis its reasonably easy to find the conversion factor between unique playernames and unique players by sampling that server over a period of time.
There is unfortunately no way of doing it from our end as servers don't publicly return the necessary data. In our Market research we use player hours as our measure because it is much more useful and could be used comfortably to get percentage measures. But that is another story.
I hope that helps
Well...hmm.

Beating TFC is kind of irrelevant. I was just hopping having NS integrated with Steam would encourage people who’ve never bothered to download the mod to give it a go, as it winks at them in the steam panel.
I would imagine the biggest problem is the learning curve. I started playing the first evening it was released so servers were full of clueless people, stumbling around in awe of the structures and the freaky aliens, and the beautiful maps.
If I logged onto a server these days as a mildly interested noob and was repeatedly murdered without understanding what was going on I’d soon give up. I guess that’s why NS Guides was conceived.
I dunno, TFC has its ammo dispensser, those things are fun... but kind of limited, and they dont really make a nice noise.
NS has the armory, now theres a cool item. I mean, after all, ammo is what its about, right? Always the ammo. Its a soldiers duty to collect, and then protect every bullet they own.
And then theres CS where you can just buy ammo by the truck loads. Sure it makes a nifty sound. but then after 30 seconds you cant buy anymore!!! whats the point... how are you supposed to amass a stockpile of ammo and guard your precious hoard of it if you cant buy anymore.
NS is definitely the best game for us armory-types who will knife a skulk to death rather than waste our precious, precious pistol ammo!!!
Dont even let me get started on Diablo2, though. I mean... it was kind of cruel to have so many collectable things in one game. It HURT.

It is quite likely. At the release 2.0, for a week or so, NS's amount of players topped both TFC and DoD at over 3000 players. However, CS remained a steady 20,000, and was still unbeatable.

Without taking in the obviously bugged way that GS gets these numbers and just working from what I can see when I check Steam and WON servers. NS has tons more players than TFC and is most likely beating DoD in over all players but unless you have a system like GSs, but alot better, you cant makes these claims because of lack of proof.
I would say that we have the secnd most players in HL behind CS.

TFC, while great, is nothing compared to what 3.0 will be.
Not only that, but NS:C should really help to pull over new players.
It's so easy to do my grandma could do it. Not only that, but individual skill really matters, more so than regular NS.
I've seen several instances where one marine kills 4 skulks and 1 skulk kills 4+ marines in NS:C.
Players that get addicted to NS:C will start to wonder what regular NS is about, and then they'll be hooked.
My predictions anyhow.
