maintenance hive in eclipse has plenty of atmosphere also have u even looked at the hera hives? im terrified of going into data core delta and archiving coz its got such perfect atmopshere that the aliens blend into thier surroundings...hard to target them.
Tho i will admit some of the hives in a few maps are a little too marine friendly.

Yeah archiving and delta is kewl too, but most other hives are way to marine friendly. We need more torn up hives like Archiving, feedwater and Delta. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

Learn mapping, make hives like that. Simple.

Would love to but mapping in the HL-engine plain sux :f
When it turn more user friendly like the UnrealED 3.0 then maybe...

UnrealEd are you joking!?! You download any map, you can edit it straight to editor and re-claim it as your own. Heavy CPU load too, some nice features (in editor lighting) but UnrealEd really isn't me.

I make hives by making a general "marine" room and just add infestation and infestation textures with darker duller lighting. To be honest there is no other way is there? I mean, is it or is it not the aliens invading the marines? Is it or is it not a marine area that the hives are in? I think those 2 questions have just been answered.

*EDIT* If you don't like Hammer try using Radiant

Well, I agree for a part.
Some hive areas just don't look... hive area enough. Don't know how to describe this.
Add more infestation, make it look and FEEL like a hive area.

UnrealED 3.0 is just as hard, as Hammer--it's just what you're now comfortable with, and spend a lot of time using. I for one, when I use one editor, Hammer, I lose all interest in other. When I go to learn UnrealED, I forget a lot of the shortcuts/movements/entities that are in Hammer.

None are better then the other, it's just the engine your mapping for.

n e 1 remember the trailer video that came out just before natural-selection 1.0? The atmosphere and infestation when those marines walked thru the door is what hives should be like, torn down power cables, flickering lights, debris everywhere, flooded areas from broken piping, loud sounds to drown out alien noises.

All those things tend to put a marine off going inside to take a peek.

Exactly, I just watched that video. Thats what a hive should look like, its terran structures yes, but its been torn up by the kharaa. When I think of a hive, I think Aliens 1. Hope you've all seen it, well should have seen it. The hive in that movie is all torn up and melted down with acid and all infected by the hive. Kharaa should really have an advantage when theyre in their hive, it should be hard to see them for all the powercables and all the broken pipes with nasty water. Hello everybody

I couldnt agree more! You are all right!

When you are moving closer to the hive area, things start to get more messy, more chaotic.

cables, pipes and other stuff is less funcunally in thiese areas.

When you enter the hive area, its dark - a strange unknow ambient sound is in there somewhere... when you walk futher on your footsteps echoes through the room(s).

Mappers must consentrate on making these hives more "Iam alone, do i have an objective here? no... i think ill just mo... WHAT WAS THAT SOUND?" <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

"oh... nothing...i gotta get out of here"

Know what i mean? sure you do.

If some of you can draw, can you post some pictures of your "DREAM-HIVE-AREA"?
    would be nice.

    ill maybe post something. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> LATERS guys

lol, that's like saying "if I had an indy car I could easily beat your camaro in a race". Don't say you can easily do it in an engine that is capable of supporting somewhere around ten times the polygon count before it starts to lag.

We all understand what your saying you want. Don't you think it's in a mappers best interest to make his work kick ***? Wouldn't torn apart hives be a feature of EVERY MAP if it were possible. Try making a hive in the half life engine, put yourself through learning Hammer/Radiant/Quark to do it. Go through the experience then try telling us what can and cannot be done easily. NS pushes many of the limits on that old dustbucket game we call half-life, and planes is one of them. Broken up hives are really nice, but if it's a choice between atmosphere and a plane count low enough to make the map compileable I know what i'd choose.

Thanks for your opinion though, i'm sure everyone will take it into consideration......again.

    Hello

Iam working on a map called "ns_alcatraz".

Its a map of a prison spaceship.

But i get a error when i play it (good compiled).

(it says something about info_compile_parameters, something about "can't int info_compile_parameters... cant see what it says, its gone to quick)

the last topic I went to was full of bad attitude, and this one isn't much better.
"Make your own" wah wah wah.

Maybe he's talking about maps that have ALREADY BEEN MADE BY OTHER PEOPLE. DUH!

Like contacting KFS/merkaba/manah/etc to tell him that you'd like to see more infested hives. Was that so hard to comprehend?

About the topic subject, it's true that Feedwater (bast) is a lovely alien hive while it remains simple. And true too that many hives in other maps are a bit too .. square and clean (Hera is ok, Data, Archiv, but i don't like them : it's too much and their walls are so difficult to climb that everybody even doesn't try to and run straight away at respawning).
