Particle system

<div class="IPBDescription">Reverse it?</div>Quick question regarding whether or not you can reverse the flow of particles with the particle system.  Would be useful for a few situations
ex. gathering energy for a generator of some sort.
Though not realistic, it does look cool.

If you mean having particles start spread out and converge on a point (instead of start at a point and spread out over time), it's not readily possible.

You could have a couple dozen individual systems and target them at a point, though this is taxing on entities.  Or you could have a small number of systems in an invisible 'funnel' with collide on, though this would look unrealistic and would require that the player be unable to reach that spot.

If you were determined enough, you could probably figure out a way to make it look good, but for now the only thing I can think of are these two bootleg scenarios, barring any kind of 'reverse' flag in the future (which I'm sure would be far too much work to be justified).

erm....not as such.....you can't (as far as I know) target the particles (which would be cool)... Only thing I can suggest is having multiple particle systems that aim at where you want the particles to go... not really much help I guess, but it's only thing I can think of.

    There's a funnel-effect entity already, i think, in HL...

env_funnel I think, but it only plays once.  Spirit of HL has one that is repeatable though...

Yeah, but if anyone uses something like that to show a "vacuum  of space effect", I'll send a hard slap via FTP.  It's become a HUGE pet peeve of mine for movies, animations, whatever to show a massively overblown explosive decompression because of an airlock opening, a hull breach, etc.  There wouldn't be any need for a spacecraft or station to pressurize itself to more than 1 atmosphere to make things liveable, and exposing 1 ATM of pressure to the 0 ATM of space is only a change of 14.7 psi (101 kPa for you metric folks), enough to create a stiff breeze, but that's about it.  Could it suck a human out of a door-sized or larger hole?  Probably, if the human wasn't expecting it and there was sufficient volume of air in the vessel to carry him out.  Would it suck the guts out of a 10 foot tall alien/human creature through a dime-sized hole (guess the movie)?  Hell no.  Hollywood has a lot to answer for for this slap in the scientific face

I just saw a short animated Japanese film that was great, up until the point where a hull breach was sucking 30 ton chunks of equipment down a cargo bay.  Then it was just S.T.U.P.I.D.

Just as a point of comparison, if you were to unscrew the core from a car tire's valve stem, the air that escapes is typically pressurized to about 1.8 to 2.4 atmospheres, in addition to the 1 atmosphere it is already under from earth's atmosphere.  All it takes is a gentle press of your finger to stop the escaping air.

a suck entity, eh?  right, sure...  You're going to be a little more specific as to what it does.
