I currently have DSL and i get 40-60 ping and gameplay is great...but soon i will have to get rid of my dsl..(cost to much at this time) and switch to dial up for 5-6 months...just wondering if anyone knows how bad it will run on dial up?
I'm on dial up and NS for WON ran pretty good with pings around 300 on good days. The Beta NS for Steam that was patched together on the Beta forums, doesn't like Dial Up too much. I don't think I've seen pings for myself under 1000. Hopefully that'll be fixed in the official Steam release.
maybe it will...ive had dsl for a year its gonna be hard to give it up but i like heat in the winter better haha
Well im on 56k and its not a very good modem £10 pound pile of software cheap crap.
But anyway i get a 180 ping in NS if the server is near me and empty. 200-210 if the server has 16 or above people on it. The problem is with combat 2-6 people on screen at once is ok, ping jumps to about 300, but with anymore and they start warping around, this is with all standard settings no rate changes or anything i could most likely tune it up abit better but if it anit broke why fix it.
Ive heard with better modems 56k v92 you can get a 160 ping because of the extra upload speeds allowed.
Its basically the same as BB altho you will notice your hits dont connect at the same time, thier have been many times were ive shot something then started reloading and its just died infront of me because of the time it takes for the bullets to register. So you do tend to waste more bullets on a target then you would with BB
I personally dont have any problems with being on 56k apart from the time its gonna take me to download steam when 3.0 comes out

Well since u asked the steam client is a good 700-800 meg on a 56k thats 40+hours so you see my problem now? 3.0 will be steam only so i will have to download 700+ megs plus the new NS at 140+ megs on a 56k this is a nightmare. I would have to download the 700 meg client as i like all HL mods.
Thanks for the info..i shouldnt have any problems then im dling stuff right now while i still have dsl i got full steam i just hope combat and 3.0 isnt to big
im on this weird thing where its 5x the speed of 56k...(dont ask )
i get bout 200 to 400 ping .....100 fps still
i also had to give up high speed internet for dial up too its never the same

No offence, but these repeating complains about this same thing are getting under my skin.

On-topic, I'd suggest ISDN, its what im forced to use atm. Youll get >100 ping on a perty wide area.
56k for NS isn't as bad as people tend to say, people often understimate 'us'.
But quite frankly, NS is almost unplayable on 56k on Steam.
and Ots?
Steam would mean more regular updates, which would all take an age to download. Besides, he may of got a friend or something on broadband to download NS won....who knows.
Yeah, as i'v understood it those regular upgrades wont be that "large" when coming to file size, would be like downloading a map trough half-life at the moment. And i kinda figured that he werent liking the fact of downloading huge files with his dial-up(I know i dont).
So i basicly figured that he was disregarding the fact that you'd have to download every new modification anyhows even if it was WON compatible. Though, if im wrong. Ill be happy to pack my bags and grumble my own stupidity. ^-^
Sorry to hear you will have to go on dial-up. AFTER dsl. You will hate every day of it I am sure. I don't think NS is the most dial-up friendly game out there. I've played that, hl deathmatch and CS on dial-up (While our DSL router was down. <Shivers>). CS and HL runs fine, but NS, as they said, had a nasty habit of "spiking" lag.
um....Ns is the most balanced 56k HL mod out of al the big ones, Cs - half a second and your dead DoD - not as bad but does not take u long to die so that extra quarter of a second hinders you TFC - is actualy quite good for 56k cause there aint really one weapon that kills you really quick cept the sniper rifle, its just that grenades are timed by the server so once u press the button the beeps you hear are 1/4 of a second out
a ping of 180 aint too bad on 56k i used to get around 200-250 with 56k altho im now in 100m/bit at uni
lol i have probs with dod on dial up..lowest ping i get is 70 and its jumpy...everytime i see an emeny its lag and then i see the death msg
You'll learn to compensate, but you'll never get in a knife fight with a skulk again if you know what's good for you. And I don't see why everyone is complaining about their screen being jumpy. I only get lag when I see a major turret farm...

tbh, if u can keep the ping below 210, u wont notice any lag making it hard to aim - the only difference will be in reaction times
e.g. take a 56k'ers and a DSL player - on CS, make them shoot at the same time, the DSL player wins on account of the server 'recieving' his bullet 1st, and then dropping the 56k'ers bullet from the game

Dialup runs ok but it just can't compete with dsl/cable.
Over in australia i can get down to 140 pings on 16 player servers late at night but generallly its more like 200-240 during peak times.
I managed to track down a better server were i get like 350 ping as well so it's not too bad, could be better though ;]
