<div class="IPBDescription">cool as hell</div> FYI: This isn't just another FPS too slow! thread. I wish I had FPS to be too slow <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

System Specs first:

AMD xp 2500
512 ddr400 ram
msi delta k6 etc mobo
ati radeon 9600 xt vid card

This is a recent switch from an amd duron 750, 256 ram, geforce 2 ti. So I'm very happy at the upgrade.

Situation, I set everything up - ins tall / reinstall / update.

Run half-life, it loads and after a few seconds freezes. My screen gives me an out of range thing - sends me back to my desktop (16 b color).

So I fiddle set my 3d settings at either open gl or d3d. My half-life set to coincide, I do not exceed my desktop resolution. I have toggled vsync off.

This problem also happens in steam, I can load the menu - but if I try to change video settings it reboots the comp.

Bottom line: What are the proper settings I should be using?
I looked through threads and was not able to identify a problem with mine. I'm very sorry if I am repeating - thanks in advance for any help.

    It sounds like a problem with refresh rates. If you are using a hack/tweak/fix for nvidia refresh rates it can sometimes cause errors when software tries to adjust your refresh rate outside of the hack/tweak/fix program.

    I would suggest making all of your settings something simple and generic (maybe what it defaults to?) Then attempting to run the game. If it works let us know and we can work from there.

    If not make sure you are getting the same error. Then try using the default VGA drivers and see if those work.

    Thanks for the response <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    I found out simply that I had to turn agp down to 4x instead of 8x.

    If anyone could explain why, or link to a reference area - I'd be very grateful.

    If you have mainboard with VIA chipset, get the latest VIA 4in1 (Hyperion) drivers from www.viaarena.com . You can also try updating your BIOS but thats on your own risk (i have 50% sucessfullnes <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> ).

    Thats simple, chances are your mobo only goes up to 4x max. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Mine does.. I really don't mind. No big deal.. Oh noes! My 9500 pro doesn't have max settings on! I r teh lose!
    Its like CD burners, you can burn a CD at 48x if your burner only goes to say.. 24x max.

    Possibly a defective video card or motherboard? Is the card a true ATI or made by an OEM manufacturer such as Sapphire? I don't really like OEM ATI products but that means nothing. Plenty of people have no problem whatsoever using them. I guess it's just possibly more likely to have a defective video card from a questionable OEM manufacturer. At least in my mind.

    Are you using the latest drivers from ATI or the ones that came with the card? If you're not using the 3.9 catalyst drivers via ATI, try downloading and installing those.

    I would second the advise on upgrading your Via 4in1 drivers to the latest.

    Board's relatively new, bios possibly buggy. I would at least check for bios revisions. 5.2 seems to be the latest. None of them mention if they fix any AGP issues but you never know.

    I'm guessing since you were able to tweak it down to 4x that you may also be able to try 6? Or 5 or 7 if you have those options. If it works at 4-7x and not 8x then I'd definitely be thinking defective hardware.

    I updated my VIA, and if they were already updated. They are reupdated <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Right now I've done a pretty good job of researching the most recent drivers and am sure they are all updated. I think I'll test the 8x soon and let you know the results.

    I don't believe it's OEM.

    Right now it's centralized around the 8x situation. So I'm just going to run some increment tests and double check my bios setting. I remember that it had an agp field set to auto. So I'll run a step by step test with a couple games (half-life, wc3, maybe something else) - and see what happens.
