Getting Started With Servers

Hi guys

I am interested in getting a server for my clan in the near future. Please could you give me some guidance on running a dedicated server myself. I have no experience with running an NS server but know a fair bit about computers.

What spec PC should I get?
What kind of connection would I require to run a decent 16-player server?

I have also been looking at the other option of renting a server. Please could you point me in the direction of a decent clan rental service that is not too expensive. What should I be expecting to pay for a 16-player server?

Thanks for your help in advance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    16 ply ns server would need about 0.800-1ghz and 256ram with a 786/786kbps connection, you probly could pull it off with 512/512.

    You can get a 16player NS server for $50 <a href='http://www.1337gamer.com' target='_blank'>here.</a>

    lol, 800mhz.. forget it

    NS 3.0 will run on steam, steam and cs use 40% cpu power on a p4 2.4ghz

    so ns will at last use 60-80 on that spec with steam. (i guess, untested)

    cs should not be using 40 usage on a p4... thats just wrong. maybe on a 32ply server loaded with mods.

    no you're right, it uses only 20%-30%... on a barebones steam install.

    However, to get that you have to not run metamod or any plugins.

    No, Steam uses a good sized chunk of CPU power. Steam with metamod for us uses 40% with basic adminmod on a CS server. No extra plugins. AMX was roughly the same as AM for benchmarking. I haven't tried out Clan mod yet.
