Pre-release of ns in forum?
Was just thinking, why not post the download link to ns on the forum a day before the official release for the public?

A way of thanking all registered forum lurkers who daily visits and post ideas, comments and encouragement to ns and it's dev team.

As you all know, lost of people out there. If lots of people knowing, lots of people will downloading. Lots of people downloading makes lots of chaos. if lots of chaos, lots of people will be frustrated. If lots of people frustrated, lots of people sad.

Makes sense to me, probably only because I read the forums.
I have a feeling the devs won't heed your suggestion, though.

Why would they release it to us a day early? As soon as a release is possible a public release will happen, i hope. Why waste their time releasing it on the forums when everyone could have it? I think its comin soon enough anyhow, i hope, again.

Heh, if they released NS early to forum goers, the news would spread like wildfire, and next thing you know:

That topic has 15 times more views than Tales from the front lines. ^^

So... Don't count on it. =) But it would be nice however.

Thing is, all the mirrors that NS will be hosted on, probably wouldn't want to hide that link from everyone else. Yeah, the link could only be shown on the forums for N-S.org, but no doubt it'd be on the frontpage of fileplanet and every other hosting site.

We actually considered doing this for awhile, but it was eventually discarded (for reasons outlined above). It was just logistically not very feasible.

It was mostly Flay's idea - he loves his crazy NS fan mob.

While it would be nice to somehow 'reward' you forum goers with something like this, there's really no point to it, and it just wouldn't work. Something like this would definitely not be kept a secret, and soon after the post, everyone and their mother would know about it. S&I tried something like this for their most recent version, and I quickly found out about it after having never visted their forums once before. Don't worry. You people probably will be among the first to catch the mirror links, if only because you will be watching the forums like hawks.

I'd think that if NS is released like other mods, there will be a "release party" in the IRC channel. The people in the IRC channel would most likely be the first to get the mod, as they will know exactly when it is uploaded, and be able to get a download link as soon as it goes up.

For any newcomers unaware of the IRC channel, that want to hang around in there a bit, you can download mIRC and connect to the server irc.gamesnet.net, channel #naturalselection.
The IRC guys are a nice bunch, (I'll make sure of it ) and if you act with some degree of decency, and follow the RULES, you'll be fine.

releasing it here first would be better, so we can start downloading before everyone else

that just means that everyone else besides the forum goers get it a day later, and there wont be as many servers or people to play against, not to mention what greedo said

what usually happens is a mod will release server files before they release the actual client to allow the server to come online before the mod is released to the masses. I could see Flayra perhaps having the 'server' files the actual release - or release a link early or what ever, but as Greed's said, I doubt it would happen.

I think I agree with Trane on this subject the most though. Flayra wants everyone to be able to play as soon as possible, so although it'd be nice to see something like this, the chances are probably 1 in a million or so ...

I thought they said there might be a IRC Release Party?

What happens at IRC release party?
• JasonBostwickJasonBostwick Blossom Join Date: 2002-04-14 Member: 444Members, NS1 Playtester
Not much, really. There will be too many people to keep normal conversation going, so we'll have the channel +M (Moderated so that only certain people, the operators and the voices [people with +'s and @'s besides their names] can talk)
I'd expect that we'll be counting down to the release, we don't know much at this time. Of course, the second NS is released, we'll be giving download mirrors to the channel, which will be the main reason most of the people will be there.
If you've ever been to a #dod release party, you'll know that there are THOUSANDS of people in there at a time, I think their max was close to 3000. Let's see if we can beat that ^_^.

How ever much I would love it, they are right. Although they might be able to make it so you have to enter your forum id and password to get it....maybe not.

Thats going to be insane! I want to be there!!!

Hmm, I don't know, I'm thinking 'bout 250+ pppl there from the 110 most that have been in there before.

An IRC release party would be nice, if they release the links there before the post them on the webpage it will give the regulars a little headway to the masses. However, this probably wouldnt work if someone states the release date and then have everyone show up in IRC that same day... hmmm dont know, as long as i can get NS on my HD im fine.

I don't think it is really necessary because we have been assured on more then one occasion that there will be plenty of mirrors.

IRC parties are always fun, and i think NS will hit a pretty damn huge number of people for it too, at the rate we are at now, and with the PR blitz. I'd say around 500-1000 people.

How about releasing the release date in the forums, but not on the main page, so that we'll be ready to mob the mirrors before everybody else. That way we would still have an advantage, but the file could still be released to everyone at the same time. Eh?

Yeah that is a good idea, but the same thing would stil probably happen. I know I would tell all my clan members anyway, then they would tell people, then there would be chaos! Chaos I tell ya.

/me gets ready for NS release.

We should have an NSF server. That should be one of the dedicateds that get thrown up. I think i could be content if I never played a non-forumer ever.
• GreedoGreedo Bounty Hunter Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 37Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I don't think MonsE would ever give out the release date in only the NS forums. I'm fairly certain that every site on the internet even remotely associated with Half-Life will know when NS is coming out. Whether they care or not is another thing, though.
