Whats your opinion
Look at everything we get from NS (and most big mods:) Free Message boards, interaction with Devs, quality and free games. Look at what most companies give: Sometimes a good game. I've gotten to the point where, at least for FPS gaming, I prefer mods to buying a new 40 game. Give me DoD over RtcW any day!

I guess the argument really doesn't apply to consoles since you can't 'mod' games, but it seems that games which you really expect to be quality on consoles generally are, as opposed to the often huge disappointments on PCs (Daikatana, anyone?)
thats more like it there.
While it is true that going retail usually yields some benefits, like quicker updates, better graphics, and in general more polished gameplay, it comes at the cost of losing other things that used to make it special.
Take a game called RuneScape, an online RPG with gameplay more addictive than Diablo II, but crap graphics. It used to be a great game, back when the devs walked around in the game asking for suggestions and stuff, but after the community grew too big and it got a PayToPlay feature that split the community in half, it lost its appeal to me. And from what I hear, CS used to be better back in beta.
In short, retail games can be just as good as free ones or mods. But games you buy in stores become, for the most part, nothing more than "just another game," instead of a true online gaming experience.
I am definately in favor of any mod that goes retail, because the mod author's definately deserve some type of money for all the blood, sweat, and tears they put into the thing.
Also remember that we are a bit biased here. I mean its like going to the Pepsi forums and asking if Coca-Cola is better. :P
