How to teach smart aleks what is wrong
Yes how do you teach smart aleks what is wrong, even though they know it is wrong and it is punishable...

Personally for general stupidity like repeated tks, doing what the team does not want, etc..
I use psay warnings, then chat, then slap, then slay, then kick

For exploits like /stuck off of the external satilite relay on ns_tanith to build chambers or a base there I usually slay the person who did it, then if the team starts doing that I'll probably slayteam

    Only way to do it.

For the lame ones (and you know who you are) "llama" works well. For the marines who could easily take a hive down but would rather camp and kill spawning skulks, "bury" them, and watch the skulks have some fun. For the camping onos who could end the game but is devouring and goring every marine that spawns, "slap" him silly and watch the spawning marines knife him to death.

Dealing with exploiters is a bit trickier, depending on the nature and severity of the exploit, and who all on the team participated in its execution (remember, you can always check server logs to see who the comm was that relocated to the engine box outside of feedwater). If it's serious enough more severe action may be warranted.

Aww shaznit... just realizied I spelled my name wrong.... missed an 'o'.... :/

Yea for the lame ip campers I just slay the camper, otherwise its annoying seeing someone tk the hive... or tk the only gorge on your team cause he's building a hive instead of healing you

Text spam = llama and gag, if you llama them they start voice spam....

    Wheeeee, name change

And yes exploiters should be warned that even though they might be just kicked from one server, they may be instaperma banned from another

this is what I designed admin_muppet for

short sharp temp ban with a written warning - the latest version does a ssay to the screen for other players to see the offense too.

I'll update it to modns as soon as I remember

Yeah, problem with steam now, you don't see the written warning unless you purposely open your console to check

Go directly to kick. A slapped/slain person simply doesn't take it seriously.

admin_bury and admin_llama make an excellent team together, especially when followed by "hey everyone, laugh at the llama". That usually works for people who are being smart alecky, etc but if it's intentional exploiting / spamming / trying to ruin the game for others then just kick/ban without hesitation

like shockwave said, slapping and slaying don't do much to make a lasting impression

Your right - this is another reason that steam sucks. However as soon as steam is required for NS our servers will be heading that way and I'll re-do the mod so that it is effective.

This might take the form of
    1 issue the ban
2 print the event/reason for all to see "$ has been banned. Reason: $"
    3 wait x seconds
    4 kick the player

Basically I have found that anything other than a ban is open to complaints of abuse. A ban is either justified or not. Straight and simple.

Justification being the key word... it's ALL about interpretation.

When your given admin its usually because you are mature enough to handle it, and therefore you can be allowed to make such decisions, an appeal can be made if the person decides he wants to screw around on your server more often lameing it up.

How you choose to run your servers is up to you, but I think I speak for all the NTFM admins when I say that these clear and simple guidelines have helped the server and the new admins. We now have 11 admins on the server and I trust them all implicetly but as a measure of good protocol non of them (absolutely none) is above the rules and all actions must be reasoned and can be questioned by any member, admin or player.

Admins are human and can make mistakes. By asking all admins to give a reason at the time of kicking or banning you are ensuring that your logs show exactly what the admin thought was going on. If the admin was later proven to have been mistaken then the ban can be lifted. If the reason is not given clearly and in a way that will enter the logs then the perpetraitor or the admin has the option of warping the facts, perhaps by poor memory or on purpose. He banned me because I was too good I read all too often on these forums, not aimed at NTFM or any server but still if the ban has "Reason : abusive voice comms" logged their defense is weakened - at least you know what you want to ask the other players.

I have found that slay, gag, llama and other commands encourage accusations of abuse and unfair adminning or persecution without actualy preventing the crime or removing the offender from the server. As an example in most countries the police are allowed to arrest a suspect to remove them from 'the public' but they are not allowed to punch them on the nose because he wasn't quite guilty enough to arrest.
