What is the ns music like?

Hopefully like this metroid music
I want to know what the music is like, or is there none in the playtesting build? Now that you are not under an NDA, I'm sure you are allowed to say that if there is any.

Hopefully a bit like this Super Metroid Remix.

Super Metroid music

Listen all the way through some parts are very atmospheric and usable ingame, not just for cutscenes like the more intense parts.

It'll be classical kind of thing, do a search, there's been a large disscussion bout this in the past.

As you probably know the music in NS will be orchestral in nature. I've heard some of it during playtests. I don't know much about it but I can tell you that is of a much hi gher quality than the mp3 you linked to. The music can really add to the atmosphere, I expect there are some expamples in the 'tales from the frontline' thread. If you want to enjoy NS music to the max I suggest you get a sound system that handles bass well

according to Rhoads, it will be orchestral music (i am guessing that they're gonna add some heavy metal music [to hype up the marines of course!])

he also claims that you can replace the song with something else that you would like. but im guessing that they didnt intentionally add that feature, you probably have to look into the ns folder and change some of the mp3 files (which isnt fun)

ive also heard that the music changes as different events occur but im not sure its true.

Orchestrated music is great, hopefully as good as that Starship Troopers song.

NS has a music folder, any MP3s you put in there will be played intermitantly.

Thats good to hear. The first thing that comes to mind is the Alien Resurection soundtrack.I listen to that playing many human vs alient type games/mods.

Hey, if the NDA's been lifted, who's the composer?
• nerve_GSnerve_GS Join Date: 2002-03-10 Member: 297Members
Someone in the NS team has composed the music from scratch, so if you're expecting me to reply Mozart or Beethoven, it's not anyone famous and old.

Hey yah, Starcraft had some nice music also. Now I just have to find some John Williams .mp3s in preperation for NS. Do I need a special search link, like morpheus or something, to find em?

yes, i would agree, Starcraft (BROODWAR version only) has very nice orchestral music which resembles the starship troopers theme

(the regular starcraft music, for the terrans, had some really lame techno/rock music which made absolutely no sense)

even with the NDA, MonsE, could you possibly give us a 10 second clip of the music?

You've given us screenshots aplenty, stories to fill volumes, a couple short movies, even a few sounds that sound exactly how the game feels even to us in member status. But we have not heard the slightest vibration of a trumpet or violin. This would complete the already stellar job you have done. Cover all corners if you will.

It would hardly be a substantial section, just enough to further whet our appetite.

We do need to keep some things secret for the release. Though with the overzealousness of a few pt's, who will remain nameless, at the lifting of the NDA, it's a wonder we still have any left.

No offense to the person who took the time to compose the music, but is it really necessary? Music only blocks sounds that may be of importance such as the clobbering footsteps of a level 5 or maybe that of a fellow marine who is behind you, and what really adds atomasphere is bullets flying in the dark as a half-seen alien blinks in your line of view and then disapears suddenly only for it to show up again but only while it's flying at your face! Now thats atmosphere.

wait... so every mp3 in the folder gets played no matter what map you're on?

I was kind of hoping that the mapper woud be able to designate what mp3s would play during his/her map. For me, I think orchestral would work for some, and industrial would REALLY fit others.

It would suck for the soundtrack to go from orchestral to industrial in the middle of a map.

Someone explain?
• MooMoo_the_SnowCowMooMoo_the_SnowCow Join Date: 2002-08-03 Member: 1057Members
Well it won't switch to industrial you know why? Because no one has ever said there was industrial music in ns.

The music is excellent, it does not detract from gameplay, and it heightens the atmopshere ten-fold.

You can, at your liesure, add or remove tracks from the mp3 folder, though songs in the folder will be played randomly, and only when the game sends the necessary 'trigger' which also appears to be random. Any song can be played on any map at any time.
• VyvnVyvn Join Date: 2002-08-24 Member: 1226Members
I've never actually listened to mp3s while playing, seeing as my Half-Life is messed and makes my comp restart when I minimize it, but as long as the music is nice and quiet, it should be really cool.

Question: If I placed an mp3 in the music folder, would it reduce its volume by a certain amount to match the rest of the music? Or would "custom" tunes just be really loud?
• ScytheScythe Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 46NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation, Reinforced - Silver
Note that the mapper can also place an mp3 entity that allows ambient MP3s to be played at points the map, looped continuously.

Keep in mind that you will be able to disable the music if you don't want it. I personally would like a MP3 system along the line of what's in Sven Coop.

I think listening to music whilst playing (esspecially classical music) has some sort of movie-feel to it.
I play Day of Defeat and with classical music he atmosphere is increased by 10.
DoD is a very atmospheric game, one with incredible sounds.
but listening to music gives it the extra edge that I don't get with the music from other games...

/me goes back to sleep now

Hm, there is some good stuff there. Scroll over "music" and then go to "orignal music." Try Cloaks Theme, it's not very NS-y, but it's really nice IMO. For some more ambient, faster stuff, try Awake. Is the NS music at all like that, or is it more slower, brooding tunes?

I think music is as least as important as graphics. They really help me immerse with the game. Especially for a singleplayer game with a story. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 have great music, so does GoldenEye, Max Payne and Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid and Legend of Zelda Link to the Past.
