Gun Animation

For me it's easier to aim and fire when the gun doesn't have the little animation sprite for the light that appears after a pistol/shotgun/machine gun and of course only on minute instances does this occur so I was wondering if anyone knew how to alter the NS sprite folder or whatever it is that makes the lighting effect for the gun shots.

    If the "light" you're referring to is the muzzle flash when firing, there's already been several debates on whether it is unfair to remove it. It serves a purpose similar to a skulk's mouth closing momentarily when biting. Last I read, neither can be removed (rather, I should say that if you <i>can</i> find a way to remove it, it should be submitted to the dev team as a possible bug/cheat)

    Hmm I see because every now and then I have this error with NS, sort of similar with aliens' weapons being disabled only with marines, where certain guns are reddened out but are still usable and they have no animations

    The muzzle flash that is included with NS is designed that size for a reason. It is a counter to the Skulk's bite-view restriction.

    To reduce it would be unevening the ability of yourself to see and aim better, thus nullifying Play testing. Also, if a server has Enforce Model's on, any difference in original creation dates, size or anything like that will get you booted from that server.

    It's much the same reason that the NS mod team (at least when I was in the forum) would close/delete/edit threads in the NS Customization forum that asked for altered Skulk bite animation's.


    Marik, it's quite possible to change the muzzle flash by editing the sprite file, but that requires a couple proggies and a few minutes in PSP. Heck, I used to make my own flashes, of course they were just 5-prong stars instead of circles.

    If it's a reproducible bug, post the details of how to demonstrate it in our <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=SF&f=26' target='_blank'>Bug Reports forum</a>. Don't worry if it doesn't show up for some time -- that section of the forums is set up so posts/threads don't appear to the public until a moderator has seen they contain no cheats/exploits, and there's quite a backlog at the moment because plenty of posts on queue refer to bugs already taken care of in 3.0

    Speaking of gun animations, is it just be, or can you cancel the shotgun animation right after it pumps? That way you don't have to wait while it swings back down. Maybe I am wrong...

    I get this too sometimes, your pistol and knife will be red, and work.. but they have no animations, not even bullet holes.. I can't figure out how to reproduce this yet though

    you can edit/remove any sprite you want from any half life mod including ns, ive searched threw the ns sprites with a sprite viewer/editor, and found the muzzle, although i didnt remove it since i think its not much of a big problem.

    Please, please, please don't tell anyone which one.. r_drawviewmodel was locked for a reason (isn't that the one that caused the gun + muzzle flash to disappear)

    Honestly, I don't actually notice any of this stuff, unless I am conciously looking for it.. I just realized how much the skulks jaw blocks when its closed yesterday.. I just don't see it.. its like I see before, then after.. then turn towards where the marine is heading

    you can remove skulk teath by deleting the model, i call it cheating. You can also remove the muzzle flash, i also call that cheating. If your gun doesn't show it is firing, drop it, pic it up. that fixes it, same goes with the pistol. Doesnt work for knife though -- you can't drop that.

    Anyway, you adapt to the skulk teath / muzzle flash, i don't even know that they are there anymore, look BEYOND what you actually see. Just like you dont actually aim at the skulks.. you aim in front.......

    i also have that sprite vieewer n editor. i didint remove it either, i think it would make the game a bit boring.


    right now, i dont actually notice the muzzle, and the skulk biting doesnt bother me either, i here all my friends always saying *i hate ns, i cant even see what im biting* i used to be like that, but after about 1 year of ns, its like its not even there.

    When you fire, all its doing is telling the game to display a picture in the middle of your screen. There are three muzzle flash sprites, and it is easy to edit them so that the picture doesn't appear. I made custom (smaller) muzzle flashes for pre 1.04 NS, but since then ive found no need. Get used to it ;P

    the first thing i did when i played ns as alien was download a 3rd person script for it..... this was long ago btw, after using some blue tak as my cursor in 3rd person it was alot easier, but after a month i stoped and started playing with normal skulk view. its hard at first, but it gets easier.

    to the nooooobs that hate the skulk bite >>> plz just play for at least 2 or 3 months, it gets easier and easier.

    Call me trigger-happy, but I'm going to lock this now. The original question has been answered, links to custom sprites of different colors and star shapes have been given, and by now we're moving into opinions on whether it's "cheating" and references to how to make such changes; both are well-worn territory, and I'd rather not have much discussion on what is widely regarded as methods of cheating.
