well even though there's hype behind that. I don't consider it unfounded.

I thought the SNES was such a great advancement over everything else at the time that it was in-fact worthy of the title Super.

And I think all those "Super" game titles are only half to blame.... Yes it adds a bit of artificial hype, but it also INSTANTLY told you whether the game was exclusively for SNES as opposed to genesis.

Super in relation to SNES games actually described them rather well...Except (..X-cept!) Super Mario Bros.

Super Metroid opposed to Metroid
...there were more, but that's all I can think of right now.

N64 did it too, with the
Mario 64
Zelda 64
...and the 50 other '64's.

X- opposed to Ex- is unacceptable and annoying. Or even -x opposed to -ecks or -icks, there was a food called Snak Stix...I was almost to infuriated to eat them (I'm all for stealing other peoples food though, - free food = college goodness) .

Also not a big fan of the ppl instead of people, 4 instead of for (I'd say fore too, but no one who uses 4 has that diverse of vocabulary), 2 instead of to or too, the u instead of you and other shortness in speech. It's barable in IMs and stufff, but not on a forum, I just loose respect for whoever writes it and pass on to the next post.

(which, ironically, I have now lost respect for myself, because I had to write ppl... )

Of course, I'm so inclined with my writing to spell okay out fully, opposed to ok or k...which are....okay.

XBox is okay too. Just because you can't expect Microsoft to come up with an original title. It's better than the GameBox or BuyNowSoWeOwnYourSoulBox, or even YBox....X is the only fitting letter in that space...and you can't very well call it Box either.

Or stalkers X-ray engine, allthough the name is appropiate given the back story of the game(allthough they could have just choosen gamma-rays or something instead).

This engine is really, really cool. It is much more of an outdoor-engine than source, hopefully Stalker will have some MODabillity, at least mapmaking...

X-Ray is a powerful game engine implementing modern technologies. The engine does not support software rendering and requires a DirectX® 8 or higher compatible accelerator.

General:
Levels combining closed spaces as well as enormous open areas
On demand loading makes it possible to create a single huge level
Game time flow, change of time of the day
Powerful skeleton-based animation allows usage of motion-capture hardware and produces smooth and realistic motion of characters
VR-Simulation engine optimized for massive load

Graphics:
Support for all second generation D3D compatible accelerators (TNT/Voodo2/etc), optimized for Geforce2 and up
Visualization optimized for hardware TnL (both FF and shading capable parts)
Continuous level of detail technology for all the geometry
~300 000 polygons per frame at 60 fps on average hardware
Detailed character models (500-10 000 polys)
High-speed blended animation system capable of an infinite number of bone interpolation & modulation operations
SSE/3Dnow! Technologies used for skinning and forward kinematics
Visibility determination
Portal-style, non-linear subdivision based visibility detection system
Optimized for T&L hardware by batching primitives in optimally sized groups
Dynamic occlusion culling, contribution culling
Adaptive hardware state caching technology

Lighting:
Colored dynamic lights and dynamic "soft" shadows
Breakable light sources
Animated lights
Character shadowing
Intelligent light source selection, clipping, and merging
Detail mapping
Water, flares, coronas, etc.

Completely abstracts the graphics API.
Multi-pass Rendering
Fallback Shaders
Facilitates cross-platform development
Separates shader writing from engine development
Pixel and Vertex shaders are automatically used (on shader capable hardware.)
Detail objects:
Grass, small stones, etc.
Enviromental effects, such as wind, turbulence, and tracks

Physics:
Based on ODE engine
Simulation speed outperforms commercial engines such as MathEngine, Havok, etc.
Real-time IK, vehicle physics, etc.
Collision database with low memory usage
Collision detection optimized for a large number of queries in a high concentration polygonal environment
Realistic simulation of ballistics, movement, and fluids

Super was the whole ploy for SNES, just like half the games on N64 had 64 in the title. and "Super" was never used extensively outside of marketing for SNES.

"X" is our fault guys...I saw a show that said market research shows that X draws the consumers attention. (though I doubt that is true recently)

Did you read the full details? There are two categories to enter in: best (most loyal) customer ever, and best "switch" story.

Translation: nVidia got the ###-end of the recent benchmark comparisons, and every gamer with half a brain is asking for an ATI Radeon 9800 XT (hmm, XT?) for Christmas. nVidia's backpedalling furiously to recapture the gamer crowd.

The sad thing is that the *only* thing |33+ sp33k did was to make the contest rules harder to read... the contest is no more appealing for being written in |33+.
