I know tactik from book i read that had ninjas in it, and one of them threw a star or something and killed some guy who needed to kill....

so i know no stars are in ns but maybe if you throw the bullet at the things they will die?!?!

and samurais kill themselves tooo so i think it is trying to tell us to kill ourselves maybe if we do that it will equal the win?

    i hope this helps !!!#!@3

Only thing in Sun Tzu that really helps in any team based FPS is this:

Opportunities are multiplied as they are seized

In other words, move the **** up!

It was a book about the general principals of command, you can use it from warfare in Iraq, to playing Command and Conqure.

Surprisingly Sun-Tzu and other military books (Patton, Rommel, Yamamoto etc) seem to be standard reading material for some players . of course it is obvious.

however no one is treating it as a mystical source of all knowledge except whoever was pushing it on you - which apparently you imagined so

furthermore it is applicable to NS and I can see where many may claim obvious and indeed, appreciate it's meaning, but be slow to find and make the appropriate decision come time.

Also know that it was heavily edited and indeed seems to me to be more a collection of maxims.. altho I have not read much of it. I think that this is indeed the case, that it is more a collection of maxims, but I am not sure of the fact.

Erm... OK, first off, as a general point, please stop using single characters as words - these boards are English-only, after all.

On the point of Sun Tzu - yes, what he states is mostly obvious - which doesn't have to mean it isn't wise. He's basically giving you a blueprint of the handling of a confrontation (in the widest sense of the word); most of his points can thus, to a certain extent, be applied to Natural Selection. Take, for example, his advice about position (which positions to occupy, which to avoid), about staying in movement, about reconnaisance, or about leading troops - when I first read about the danger of soldiers 'slipping away' when the fight happens too near to their homes, I actually had the picture of an armory in my mind.
That said, I have read the Art of War with great interest, but am still a sucky commander. Guess you just need some talent to start off with

Its all in the interpretation, and how one can apply it. Much like Bruce Lee's initial concept for Jeet Kune Do.

The initial concept is to teach people to do what they do best, to make the most of what they have - but instead the unimaginative just take that information and copy it. You can see it in many situations, from the real world to the virtual world. One person comms and wins - he tells others how he achieved it. While the successful comm is talking of the philosophy of his win, some players will read it as a simple recipe to be repeated.

As with Sun Tzu - some of it *is* obvious but few actually apply it. And, of course, you have the ultimate conclusion which is written in Hagakure -

"Learning such things as military tactics is useless. If one does not strike out by simply closing his eyes and rushing into the enemy, even if it is only one step, he will be of no use."

    Or a longer passage:

"On the battlefield, once discretion starts it cannot be stopped. One will not break through to the enemy with discretion. Indiscretion is most important when in front of the tiger's den. Therefore, if one were informed of military tactics, he would have many doubts, and there will be no end to the matter. My descendants will not practice military tactics.'
    According to Lord Naoshige's words:
There is something to which every young samurai should pay attention. During times of peace when listening to stories of battle, one should never say, "In facing such a situation, what would a person do?" Such words are out of the question. How will a man who has doubts even in his own room achieve anything on the battlefield? There is a saying that goes, "No matter what the circumstances might be, one should be of the mind to win. One should be holding the first spear to strike." Even though you have put your life on the line, there is nothing to be done when the situation doesn't go as planned."

    Mm, philosophic.

People always use The Art of War to teach business too. I think it's just orientalism / mysticism that we honkeys always seem to have with anything both Asian and pre-modern. (I'm a Japanese Studies major, so I can say that)

And yet, nobody ever bothers to apply his techniques. Why?...
I find him to be a frickin' genius.
If you want to release the military mastermind within you, I also recommend Vegetius, Machiavelli, and Napoleon (who wrote short maxims and combined them into a book).

omg guys I saw zero commanding yestrday it was like art. I am going to tell you a secret I know.

but don't tell anyone guys I think zero is really suntzu. I though at first it was zero who read the book by him but then it turned out that he was so good and there is only one reason for that and I know now it is because he is suntzu it's for sure.

or maybe he is possessd by the ghost of suntzu like in hikaru go anime where hikaru is posessed by that girl ghost but hes' not really a girl. like that but sunzu isn't girl he is man.

what do you think? has anyone ever seen zero play besides me? I think he is the best ocmmander I nominated him in that one thread.

Oh man I couldn't stop laughing when I read that. But the best part is that he has a point. Sometimes, you do well after going through some kind of preparation for something, simply because it restored your confidence. I know when I tried to teach my brother to do better at Warcraft 3, I had no idea what I was talking about. Sure I read all kinds of stuff on the subject, watched some good people's replays, and had two very excellent players sit down and talk about it. But when I actually tried to teach him, I was telling him a step by step template on how to start the game. When I tried the template myself, I failed miserably. But my brother's win-lose ration became much better. (Not to say it was really all that bad to begin with however.)

Wow, Destro you are so correct with your sun tzu. But i too also found a great great path to follow for T3H WIN! You see it all came to me as the day rolled by and i was busy reading up on my civilization. And while i was in teh civilixation cloud of myst i thought to myself that this could be the new era dawned upon ns( or shall i say NATURAL SELECTION).. You see as i tweaked my glasses while i was in a kozzikutic brain strom, i relized the way to get that "T3H WIN" one most learn upon the rise and fall of architecture. I mean what better time to dawn upon myself while i was readin up on my CIVILIZATION a book full of european architecture... so as the story moves along...

I started Natural Selection to find myself in teh commander chair using my knowledge upon architecture, while everyone laughed at me at first as how my based look. but when we were chared by a full head of steam OH NOES (onos), he was easily slain by not only the turrets and etc, but by the architecture... i mean once he came rushing in, he had no idea what just happened... for a second he thinks he has teh win with no turrets and anything else to scare him away.... so he busts in for the phase gate, (not to notice it was a trap) i had another phase behind him which he could not see thru his head full o steam.. so as he gored my phases and his skulks came for backup , my architecture came into play.. as the rushed in without checkin their blind spot, my architecture turrets and phase came into the difference. 3 skulks BAMMMM dead due to the turrets and as the goring mofo OH NOES took out the (TRAP) phase all my men and the kings horse rushed thru the opp phase to do a HUGE SURPRISE ATTACK (such as the trojan horse) , the OH NOES turns around to see the architecture of his life of AWE... his jaw drops to the floor as turrets and lmgs blast away at him such as a blaster worm.. and he falls brutley to teh ground, to only glipse for his last time the awe and components of teh architecture... and yes to match went on and we slaughtered them, not due to mariner spirit but do to the rally of a great architectural design....

and that destro is how i got T3H WIN.. . from using teh knowledge of architecture and early day civilization

Haven't read it.. but the key to winning in ns is flexibility.. if you can't get through one way, go another.. don't keep sending marines to their death for a hive, while another is empty.. don't get caught turret farming.. more then 2 turrets are usually bad (you have electrify, which works alot better against skulks).. once your marines trust you, you will have no problems at all winning.. above all, remember that ITS A GAME - and that winning or losing won't have any effect on you

Have the forums suddenly been invaded by AOL speak!?

Though much of what Sun Tzu says may seem obvious, remember that it may very well only seem obvious because we're sitting on top of 5000 years of military history, in addition to living in the most information rich period of human civilisation. We also play quite a lot of warfare simulations, and as such the best or obvious stratagies in these games will quite often mirror the stratagies used in real life. There is a still a lot to be learned from Sun Tzu's works however, and any general or commander would do well to read them.
