Ns 3.0 Distribution

<div class="IPBDescription">when 3.0 comes out</div> <b>1.</b>will ns 3.0 come out before cs:cz? if so then it will be the first new game to be distributed through steam since steam was released. but we have seen the delay in cs:cz, so is steam stable enough to introduce and distribute new full games?
<b>2.</b>do you think that gameplay will be hindered by all the nubs who wanna try this new game that suddenly appears on their "my games" list?

    1. DoD, CS and TFC are all non-Half-Life games distributed through Steam. Counter Strike CZ will be the first game available to be purchased over Steam. NS will be like DoD, just a supported mod on Steam.

    2. Nope. It's going to add alot of vitality to NS and will be great of the community.

i said <i>new</i> game <i>since </i>the release, those were all steam launch games. cz or ns will be the first non-launch game. but many people feel that the cs:cz delay is because the steam servers are not stable enough to add whole new games.

    <b><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Natural Selection v3.0</span></b>
    Natural Selection: Combat<img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/images/nsc_logo-sm.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
Natural Selection: Combat is a new fast and furious gameplay mode focusing on intense action. Combat games generally last less then ten minutes, and require very little knowledge to play.

New maps - Six new Combat maps, made just for Combat. Enjoy a combat-simulation on "daimos", battle over rock and water on "core", or enjoy non-stop action on "faceoff".

New upgrades - New Combat-specific upgrades like "resupply" and personal scanner sweep give you help when you need it.

Gain experience - Get experience for killing the enemy, or for attacking their base. As you gain experience, you gain levels. Each new level lets you choose a new upgrade, weapon, or piece of equipment. Even after death, you retain these power-ups.

    <b>New NS gameplay</b><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/images/nsc_action.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

New look - Over 150 new textures and new NS maps give the game a whole new look. Fight in the claustrophic halls of ns_ayumi, catching a glips of snow falling outside a catwalk, or take control of the awe-inspiring and incredible ns_agora.

Catalyst-packs - New "catalyst-packs" allow Commander to speed rate of fire and movement of marines for a short duration.

New lerk - New flight model for the "Lerk", allowing smooth and precise flapping and gliding (he also has his bite back!).

New spectator interface - All-new spectator mode is easier to use and ideal for match commentators.

New manual - The manual has been totally re-written to include a "quick start" guide, and detailed information on every weapon, ability and structure.

Other features - New chat and font system, the ability for mappers to pre-place structures in maps, 'votemap' command, new scoreboard, new alien "focus" upgrade, and much more.

    <b>STEAM and VAC support</b><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/images/steam_logo.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Full Steam support - Official Steam support, including a new NS desktop, friends list, and automatic updating. NS will be listed under the "My Games" section (not as a 3rd-party mod).

VALVe Anti-Cheat (VAC) - VAC means that NS and Half-life are updated automatically when new cheats are found. Any cheaters detected by the system are immediately temporarily or permanently banned across all NS servers.

    <b>Balanced and tested</b><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/images/join-const.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

Extensively tested - Extensive playtesting with over 100 NS clans and hundreds of Constellation members will mean the most balanced and fun NS yet.

Massive improvements - Over 200 bugs and exploits have been fixed in this version, along with dozens of other improvements. These include "sinking" structures, better hitboxes for players and structures (even for wall-walking skulks!), skulk prediction fixes, and hundreds more.

NS v3.0 will be available this holiday season. Check this page for updates...

    Thats the official anouncment.

is that a fact Sirus? All the games you mentioned are owned by valve/sierra so naturally they would be distributed by them, but I have yet to see any third party mods distributed any other way than the traditional way

Edit: I'm an idiot. Shoot me.

On topic: NS is out 'holiday season', and I don't remember when CZ was delayed to, but I thought it was sometime this year. And why would Joe Newbie download some random game they've never heard of? And how long would they play it if they do? Imagine Joe Newbie spawning into Joe Veteran's gullet/hmg fire/teeth. I think they would unistal fast...

I think it will produce a much needed boon to the playerbase. Only thing is: be sure you have a regular server and try to get a reserved slot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> . That way you essentially aviod the nublets, and can wait until they mature into more informed players.

If something is "fully supported" by Steam that means it auto-updates and everything. So yes <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

On the subject of the influx of noobs: I don't think it will/CAN be any worse than the one we had when 2.0 came out, and it'll probably be the same/even less.

Anyway we could have a Bittorrent file of NS 3.0, then manually install it into steam. I don't think stream compare to the power of BT in pure dl speed, so I'd rather go through that route.

Besides, BT worked like a charm on the launch day of NS 2.0 for me.

Maybe they're looking for a good mod to play? I knew nothing about NS when 1.0 came out, yet I downloaded it. I've been a fan ever since.

Maybe on a calm normal day, but the day 3.0 comes out won't be a normal one - transfers will be slower.

Anyone even know how big the patch will be?

hopefully this will lead to minor client patches, instead of the semi-anual 120 meg new version. Remember how long we waited for the vent hitbox bug to be fixed? :-[

errrm, if NS gets the full Steam treatment, will that mean that steam will try to download -everything- that's new?
will it detect files that are 'different' ?
    will I still be able to use custom models? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
I kind of like my alien ™ aliens and laser guns..

This probably is a silly question, Flayra would never be that daft to break that aspect of the game, but I... well I'd just like to know for sure I guess =)

You should be able to continue using custom models and such, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to. I can still use custom models with Steam TFC

you will have to re-install your custom models, because ns will nolonger be in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\xxx@xxx.xxx\half-life\ns, it will be in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\xxx@xxx.xxx\natural selection, because it will act as a stand-alone game instead of a mod

I don't know much about steam.

Mainly because i NEVER play CS and DoD. Fed up with them.

But now that my favorite mod is heading on it....i'd like to know exactly what to do.

Should i download Steam full now....or wait for a "NS-supporting" version to come out?

(can't wait to see what that new "Focus" upgrade does!)

I would download it now or at least before NS comes out on it. As if you wait until the day NS 3.0 comes out on steam to download steam its p;robably going to go a lot slower as id imagine quite alot of people will wait and if so the download speeds could be very poor/unstable

Nope, no NS-only Steam exists if I'm correct

So you will have to DL Steam, hopefully the full patch, but then you also have some updating to do :/

so i take it that you will be able to download the NS cache(?) like you can do with CS or TFC etc and then install it to youer steam directory,
