Hi, I just saw "OpenSource Natural Selection"'s - am wondering, is Natural selection going opensource?

I say good luck to the man. I'm sure it's against copyright, but good luck on trying to copy NS. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->
That's a laugh for the day.

gg wasted time..
No, its not "officially" open source.
That reminds me of a comic in the artwork forum which I will post as soon as I find it.....

I take no credit for this. All hail Retails who posted this comic (along with several others) <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=53210&st=15' target='_blank'>here.</a>
Just because he wants to try dosen't warrant your laughter at him. For shame <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

ROFL !!!
in regards to the actual topic at hand, this looks promising. there is an open source TFC mod, and it's great. It fixes a lot of the bugs that valve never got around to fixing, and it includes some nice little features. (it took him 2 years to release TFC-R, and it's not even done yet) So maybe if he isn't sent a cease and desist letter, we'll have another cool NS-like mod.
Also, it sounds like it's just one guy doing it, and that's going to be a lot of work for one person to do. That is, if he does all the modelling, texturing and mapping himself, otherwise i feel it could tread on some pretty thin ice if he does use NS material.

Hrmmm.....
It goes without saying that coding an HL MOD is a learning experience for all involved. Why not just start his own project? He doesn't need to recreate anything, but that doesn't mean he can't be "inspired".
It just seems like a silly way to do it. Obviously all coders use examples, but the NS team didn't learn everything they know through mimickry, I'm sure.

I found this really funny for some reason. Maybe it's because I only got 1 hour of sleep

I find it quite different. This is someone making a replica of a program(not being inspired by) as well as doing so with a program which is allready gratis and is not having problems due to being closed sourced(I mean there is no community outcry for hovaring scorpians, rubber nuclear weapons to disperse the aliens or anything else that the NS team just refuses to implement despite the majority's wish. So the NS team is apparently allready listening to the community as well as releasing patches and bugfixes at a high rate).
Any motivation for making an open sourced NS clone seems to be purely personal, not of any utillitarian or other origin.

Or it could be that after flarya made so much money for cm's getting to pt that a week later it was announced that just about anybody could pt. There for tons of people just spent $20 to get pt and now get it for free.
Granted, i mean, most open source programs are created to be a free alternative to retail products. But i'm sure if you created an open source Outlook and called it Open Source Outlook, you'd have Microsoft down on you faster than you can type "Jesuschrist,nobill,NOOOO,don'ttouchmethere...".
Thanks for the laugh <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Agreed.
More power to him. I think in the end, if this guy goes the whole 9 yards it may be similar to NS, but I highly doubt it will ba an NS clone. There are alot of different game types you could try out if you had a HL engine + NS coded extras.
Oh well..
I know what it looks like. It has programming language syntax, and code blocks, and probably curly braces and comments. I bet it also has conditional if/else logic, as well as some classes and functions.
That'd be my guess.
