Ok, never even thought of it, but why take it out? why cant hives be built faster like all the other buildings? Your occupying an alien builder... so why would it be bad to include this as a Feature and not a bug?

    think of how much faster you could get hives 2 and three up with two or three gorges 'building' it... especially in large games

    It involves a bit of the balance by slowing alien progress. If it were kept in, it could throw the balance of the game off. Necessitating other changes.

    Better one small change now than 50 balance issues in the future.

    Alright... so your saying taking 2-3 players off the battle field to build hives faster is unbalanced... well if that is the case... GG Aliens because the marines suck.

    Right now aliens cant "fast tech" like marines can... i spose it doesn't matter, but i still dont see why it would be unbalanced.

    People argue that the aliens win more games in pubs now. If they could get the hives faster, imagine the amount of threads created complaining about "how super fast aliens get bile bomb and stomp" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    And it currently it takes 2-3 gorges (at some point) for aliens to be able to get enough res to compete anyway.

    Maybe if marines were still able to +use the arms lab to get upgrades faster, then the addition of this "feature" could be argued.

    And it doesn't matter if you use the hive to make it build faster; there's a set timer for hives now. I.e. the 2 or so minutes it takes to build a hive is a SET limit, and is only deactivated if a building hive is killed.

    For example: Let's say you start the second hive, and build it in less then 20 seconds (For sheets and giggles.). You can NOT build the next hive until that "timer" is finished. Why? Said timer. It checks the timer, not the building status of a hive, to determine if you can build the third.

    why not make it a server option?

    in another HL mod, gangwars, there are lots of things that are server side options that admins can change ... (can't recall right now), the same way with warcraft3 for CS, you can change the amount of exp and how long the server will keep it, all server-side options (in this case, mod) ...

    The set "phases" of aliens are already ignored.

    It's all about speed teching. How many times have you seen aliens stay at level 2 DC any longer than is absolutely neccesary?

    You might as well start them off with the timer until hives become "active" and skip the whole "build it" thing.

    Taking two or three gorges out of the battle for 20-30 seconds would NOT be in any way significant, as they're probably not fighting anyway and the lerks are sporing and the skulks are regening and the blah blah blah.

    Bad idea. Yay for bug removal.

    Marines can't speed up upgrades. Upgrading the armory, upgrading weapons, upgrading armor, etc. can't be sped up.

    I think by speed teching for the rines he means you build multiple buildings of the same type for example:
    2 arms labs: upg armour and weaps at same time.
    2 Protos: HA and JP at same time
    Hell even 2 obs to get MT and phase tech at same time.

    Thats how you speed tech rines.

    In 1.00 you could though 8)
    Although it had a rather small effect, teamwork could get things done a LOT faster.

    I beleive the intention is to give people a more or less homogenized version of the game.

    IE. traveling from server to server won't vastly change your impression of the game. There's a limit to how many server options you can put in before you frustrate new players because the rules change depending on what server you're in.


    At least, that's the way I see it.

    He posted this on the 25th. Flayra made the thread and updated natutal-selection.org declaring that 2.1 was now 3.0 on the 26th.

    Now who looks foolish?

    As for the subject at hand - I like the idea that aliens have to guard the hive for a time. It gives the marines a chance to retaliate, if they have enough intel. I think +using a hive would dimish that aspect of the game.
