Sense he didn't help you at all, I will.

You need to bring your console down while in game. To bring it down just hit ~. If this doesn't work. Go to the config section and open it in notepad. You'll see console set at 0. Just change it to 1.

While in the game, bring down the console and type status, hit enter. You'll see a list of names, find your name and beside it should be your wonid. It's simple. The same thing applys in steam to find your steam id.

Is that 'In game' as in the main menu or actually playing the game. Remember I can't even connect to any server to actully play the game.

Anyway, it was set to 1 or rather '1.0', and anytime I try to type status in the console page which you get into form the main menu it says not 'can not get status: not connected' or something similar. Hitting ~ doesn't do much for me except esacpe from the offline console page and back to the main menu of the game. Im guessing you have to be in game for ~ to work?

How do you get NS to work with Steam? I thought you couldn't do that yet, not till 2.1.

You can get it to work, cept NS is a lot more crappier and buggier on steam. You can only find out your wonid when connected to a server. If your needing this to get in a clan or something. Not gonna help if you cant connect. I recommend writing it down or saving it to a document once you get it.

Ok I guess my next question is what do I need my wonid for. Once I get it what do I do with it?

Do I need it to login somewhere? The instructions at WON.net make it sound like it is a very simple process. DL the program install and bam you are in.

But everytime I try to join a game it says

-The server requires that you be validated through WON.net
    -Could not obtain WON authentication

I know the wonid works in concert with you CD-key. Could my problem be that some asshat jacked my CD-key off Kazza. If so I hope thier balls fall off.

Now will NS work with Steam even if someone did jack my CD-key or am I just doomed to not play NS?

    Hi outlaw.

It's weird how people seem to do the damnedest not to answer your question.

Does it give you a reason for not authenticating your cd-key(IE a reason it could not get WON authentication)?

Can you play regular Half-Life/CS/any other modification?

A wonid was associated with your CD-key when you first played half-life(any MOD) online for the first time. The wonid can be used to identify you for such purposes as baning you from a server or giving you special priviledges(admin rights for example). This wonid is otherwise useless and there is little need for you to write down yours.

All you should need to get authenticated by WON is to have Half-Life installed, the MOD/s you wish to play installed and a valid CD-key entered in. There are no mystical things you need to do with your wonid or anything else.

I ran a dedicated server for a few days(NS 1.00 just before 2.0 came out just for fun) and I couldn't connect to it from another computer to see that everything worked because I do not have another copy of Half-Life and thus only one CD-key. The error I got was something like "your CD-key is allready in use". I wouldn't worry about your CD-key being stolen unless you get some error like that. It removes the console quickly when connecting to a server and failing due to all slots full or anything else so you might not have caught the whole message.

If this is the case then find a server and write down it's IP address. Then go back to the main menu. If it says console at the top of the menu then click it. Otherwise go back to windows and add "-console" to the NS shortcut.

When in the console write "connect <address>", where <address> is the IP address you wrote down. It will try to connect and if it fails you will still be in the console and can read all the messages. You can use pageup/pagedown to scroll if there is more than one page.

You cannot generate CD-keys with some lame key-generator for multiplayer(since they are picked at random) and you would need to try authenticating an insane amount of times to find a key that works, the only way someone 'found your key on kazaa' is if they stole it from you, there is no other plausible way.

I do not think you would be able to play any other MODs if your CD-key was allready in use by some "asshat" so if other MODs work then this is likely not the case.

Allthough WON is relatively flawless, it has been down on occassion and during those times you cannot get authenticated. If you have tried on more than one occassion(not 10 times in a row, I mean another day or something) the this is not likely.

NS should work with steam if you have a valid CD-key and you are the first person to create a steam account with that CD-key.

Thx Solvent. I'll try that out right now.

Im no FPS n00b, but I have never played a Half-life mod including Counter Strike, so Ive never dealt with wonid. I can play SP Half-life just fine though. When it disconnects me from trying to connect its says Unable to connect: could not establish connection or something similar. It doesn't say your 'CD-Key has been jacked' or anthing.

On other news I went back to my locale Gamestop and returned my old Half-life:GotyE for exchange for a new one (luckily I kept the box all this time. I just told them the CD-key didn't work <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ). So unless they jacked that CD-key too it should work.

Ok, I unistalled all the old stuff, installed the new CD with new CD-key, and I'm getting the same thing <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->.

I did what you said and all I saw was

-The server requires that you be validated through WON.net
    -Could not obtain WON authentication

So I'll just assume WON is down for today and try some other day.

Now.. how exactly do get NS to work on Steam?

    That's a really weird error <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->.

What half-life 'flavour' do you have? Is it CS retail, DOD retail, regular Half-life or something else?

I'm not sure if blue-shift or opposing force allow you too play online or not, but those above I am certain of.

Could it be some weird router issue or something?

    Welcome to the forum....

In order to play NS you need a the latest update to Half-Life check and see if you have that first. You can get version 1.1.1.0 <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/half-life/' target='_blank'>here</a>. You would of probably recieved an invalid version message if this was the problem though.

If you already have done that, then the next thing to check is if you have a firewall, router, or you are on a network that is blocking your access to the WON servers. If you are on a network that is doing this, this is the reason that you are unable to get WON access. I believe it is UDP port 27015 (someone correct me if I am wrong) that needs to be opened up.

If there is any more specifics you could give, let us know, we will help.

Update your half-life to the most current version as stated above, then make sure your firewall allows you to connect, the WON error means it can't find a connection to WON, which a firewall, or router might block. Then install NS 2.0 and play. If that doesn't work I dunno.

Well I got it to work on steam so im satisfied.

Question about steam though: are games played on steam not suppose to be fully maximized and stay widowed?

Go to options while in game, then video, and unclick windowed mode.
