I Have Done It

Ze Apache!
Ok, so I was playing Desert Combat today, version .5L (500meg download off of FilePlanet...bleh). Now, i recently started playing again, and I didn't expect to be able to fly anything but the planes.

So, I load up a co-op LAN server, which gives me control over points and bots.

First map is El Alamein, 650 point match, Conquest style.

I start out as Spec Ops, with the new CAR15. Very nifty silenced rifled, more accurate then the M16, with a cool Red dot scope.

I hop into my Desert Buggy, driving for a while. I capture the south outpost. Then some "Opposition" (Iraqi) soldiers show up and...shoot my Buggy dead. Heart broken, I rush them with my CAR and die. So I spawn back at base and decide to try out the new UH-60L. I hop in, go up. Float there for a second, and I start moving forward. About a minute later, I actually kill something. Then I get killed by a Shilka (Iraqi AA tank). So I spawn back at my base. The UH-60L is gone, so I decide to hop into the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter. That was at about 730-745. I managed to get very good with the rocket pod and the Hellfire missiles (excuse me military guys if that's wrong). Nothing like holding a canyon for 5 minutes with only 64 Rockets, 16 Hellfire missiles and my piloting skills. By the end, i was getting good enough to be able to actually just do fly-by reloads on my hangar.

Thank you. I just had to tell someone, as my girlfriend doesn't really care.

Congrats bro... I had to practice my Apache skills on a LAN as well... after getting strafed by them countless times, and watching the AI just waste them, I got frustrated, broke down, and invested 3 LAN hours into training myself to be a damnable good pilot.

The cool thing is...I'm doing it almost flawlessly, with only keyboard & mouse, after not touching the game for months. I went to a LAN with my friend (it's our male bonding, he has no decent computer). I saw an Apache coming at me, I grabbed a Shilka, POP goes the AH64. So I finally caved afterwards, I DL'ed, installed, and it's proved to be worth the *sigh* 12 hours spent downloading.

Cuz now that I can fly the Apache, I can slaughter my friends on our next LAN game. Cuz, y'know, they suck at flying anything and Apache is perfect anti-tank. and Aircraft can't really kill it.

    Using a mouse ? ? ?

    :O
  • Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
    Yes, a mouse.

I found it's all just a matter of balance. If you start to tilt using the mouse only, press the appropiate key to rotate in the opposite direction of the tilt. It usually levels it out.

    Desert Combat.

It's a modification for Battlefield 1942, a GREAT game once you patch it. Just requires some patience.

    Desert Combat Homepage

    that's the URL, IIRC.

(thanks for the thread edit Mod/Admin)

I don't think the apache's very hard to fly, and I use a mouse. Hell, when aircraft are following me, I do flips in it.

Flying Helis are easy with mouse, some people just try it once and give up and say it's ****ing hard. With practice it's easy. As for the missles, you got the hellfire part right but the "rocket pods" are call FFAR (folding fin air rocket). Congrats.

Yea, I remember trying to fly that stupid think. But then again I played when Desert Combat had just come out, so maybe its gotten better sonce then? I dunno I really don't feel like BF1942 is worth re-installing.

The big missiles that can't kill a ****ing thing and you only get 8 of are Hellfire missiles. In real life, one can pop a tank wide open. In desert combat, it takes half your load to pop a T-72.

The lil' ones are Hydras, and they've been gimped to hell because they made it so they literally fly in random directions.

Smoke, you'll never hate flying helicopters until you've played Lost Village and flown a blackhawk. Every **** in the world carries a stinger on that map and for some reason, light, pproximity fragmentation missiles are able to waste a huge, armored hulk of a helicopter in two hits. God it took an anti-tank rocket to take one down in Black Hawk Down, and that was straight to the rotors.

Rockets are suppse to take black hawks down in ONE hit not two.
  • Smoke_NovaSmoke_Nova Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8697Members
Actually, now the Hellfire's pop open a T-72 on one direct hit to the turret (I did write turrent..oh god how NS has changed me). Two to take out if you strike side/lower body.

    I use the Hydra's mainly for the APC's, Shilka's and Technical's.

Stinger's are anti-aircraft weapons, IIRC, so of course they'll take them out in one or two hits.

Since I have to play w/ bots, I can basically play only the default BF1942 maps.

But the Black Hawk's are fun.

It's also a big accomplishment for me because i never have been able to get them to work, even after hours of trying, with a joystick

I could never get the Heli Controls down. I also hated when they'd take a 5 person Heli and just take off.

I just finished Wake. 750 points, it was 400 points Iraqi, 500 American.

But, they killed my Apache. I was sad.

I've gotten very good at flyby ammo-reloads. The crew on the carrier must have JP's from 1.04.

This is my Apache. Me and my friend Generic Soldier decided to land for a picture.

Like everything important to a man, I named him.

I know the feeling. Which is why the quote strikes a chord with me.

I have respect for you, helicopters are a b*tch when it comes to flying.
