I am seriously terrified of playing as a commander. I never liked RTS games on a competetive level either so that may be part of it.
On the whole, I can comm well and win about 50/50. However, by the time the round is over, I am in a cold sweat and my eyes ache from being locked onto the screen.

that would never be possible in a pub, that 5 secconds your all frozen is enough to say "ill com" or "bags not com" . that aspect of the game is fine
i suppose the main thing would be to keep your cool... as long as you can focus and somewhat direct the marines (any way you can, waypoints, tell them, yell at them, swear at them), you should be just fine

One thing about comming, don't even consider jumping in the chair in a real game without voice chat bound somewhere you can get to it and still perform tasks (ideally a mouse button). Wasting time typing will not help you win...
back on topic, I agree with the rest of the peeps in here. Jump on a server with a few marines, commander, learn the basics (especially the differences between left/right click). Slowly move up, com if no-one else does, and learn. I hate comming, but do it if nobody else will because I know it's the only way I'm going to get better.
I tend to make a better forum comm than a in game comm, funny thing is the exp. comms rekon my advice is great and demand I get into the chair (1 promised to weld me into chair ). The prob is that I am far too defensive as a RTS player...I prefer to allow the enemy to waste his/her forces on my defensive lines before I send up my offensive force...less losses that way.
In NS defensive is almost a dead certinty for a loss.
imo, the human factor of comming in NS is what makes it scary. for one, people bitching cos you dont do stuff right, especially if they yell away on a mic is *not* fun also, *YOU* are mainly responsible for marines having a boring losing game, if you go comm... so, erm, the fact your 'soldiers' are actual people instead of AI muppets makes me horrified of jumping in CC
And, IMHO, this could all be solved if there was a decent "practice" NS version that came WITH NS, rather than one you've got to try and make Bots work right with the Server software, tweak and pray, etc. The learning curve would flatten significantly, if we didn't have to try to Comm under fire for our first experiences. This could make Pubs more fun, lead to fewer embarrassing losses, address the 'balance' issues among noobs that are often just inexperience, not how much this or that building/upgrade/evolution costs. Hell, even REAL marines today, lots of them spend time in simulators... Gah...

This is a VERY interesting thread to read. Its amazing how many people are reluctant to go Comm. And that is clearly the biggest threat to NS, and the reason for all this balance issue crap. You hear so many people say "Oh Kharaa always win" or "Marines always win" (less common) - what utter bull. Its (imo) almost always been a neatly balanced game - but the deciding issue is the Commander. There are few excellent Comms out there - I wish there were more; I wish that I was one. But it seems like it just ain't gonna happen lol. If this...Commophobia?...is confronted, I think we would see many more Commanders, willing ones, playing a lot more often.
be NICE to your commander!! tell him gt comm, when the team loses, or well done <comm's name>!! i dunno about other comms, but getting congrats and recognition from the other rines is one of the things that makes comming so fun. and i see it too infrequently.
i go through stages of comm confidence, what i call getting the comm mojo, and commophobia. it's tough to get out of the rut and take the chair.
my experience with commophobia are that it is caused by the following: -losing a few games in a row, with no discernable hole in strategy, and no constructive criticism and support from the rines. -mean marines (there are only a few, but good god, they can wear ya down) -marines that don't follow orders -aliens being arrogant and roostery (you know the word, the word filter kills it ), saying such unnecessarythings as 'ownted!', pwned, owned, etc -unsportsmanlike behaviour, by either team -whiny rines -rines that are constantly comming from the ground (get armour 1 NOW comm!! if we dont' seige here NOW we'll lose!), this is one of my pet peeves, as i'm a bit of a despot in the chair :S
sooo, obviously, the inverse helps to combat commophobia -winning -considerate, professional conduct from rines -rines that wait for orders, get to waypoints, build stuff, etc -aliens saying gg, or 'that's a tough map for rines' or whatever, when they clearly own us -sportsmanship, aliens finishing the game quickly when they have won, etc -rines that will charge into a group of ocs trusting that i will keep them alive -rines that suggest politely ("we could really use armor 1", "i see alot of alien RTs and and alot of kills by KillerPlayerDudeALienGuy, possibly get hmg soon for onos detterrant")

when this happens play a few rounds as xeno, to try and work out from the ground how to stop the attacks, when u get back in the cc
very true slayer, whenever i comm its usually because no one else wants to, and by then (about 10-20 seconds after round start) everyone's run off everywhere, making it hard to get them where you want them...
