    a) How many times does it have to be said before the message gets through?

It will be released <b>when it is ready</b>

    b) If you had been around a long time, then you would know that this form of post is the big "No No" around these parts. I suspect you are only a hatchling masquerading as a veteran. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    c) Who do I have to kill to get a topic-lock button? <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

Re-welcome, Tytanium... for your own safety, I suggest checking out <a href="http://www.readyroom.org" target="_blank">The Readyroom</a> as well as the various FAQs in the forums... they'll hopefully answer most of your n00b-like questions and prevent any unexpected assaults from raving Playtesters.  (:

I'm as eager as anyone for NS to release even tho I'm a PT, because then I can indulge my addiction 24x7. I just wish that people would give the devs some breathing space to actually do their job rather than having to answer the same speculations and/or demands for release all the time.

Start with grammar and spelling, please.

Edit: No, it was a spelling error, it would have been far more ironic if I had actually misspelled "spelling", and I'm not American. How did you figure that?
  • CollateralDamageCollateralDamage Join Date: 2002-07-15 Member: 949Members
In my humble opinion, <i>grammar</i> is one of the words you really really shouldn't spell wrong.

But I guess once enough Americans misspell it, it enters the dictionaries as "American English".

PISH POSH TO THAT! I've been here for well over a year (ever since the first phl post showing ns), longer than some of the PT's. And honestly, I'm sick of waiting and seeing posts by PT's (the one's whose newbie posts I read) telling me to have patience.

Can't I be a little annoyed? ahhh come on, at least half as angry as the people who've been following this for 2 weeks? pretty please? no? oh fine

[note to those who pay attention to the "joined: date" thingie, you don't have to be registered on the boards to be following NS and reading the forums avidly. And yes, I AM a huge lurker]

But how often do we have to stress the fact that it will be released when it's done?
It's in the FAQ and as far as I know: Everyday there is at least one new threat with this topic.
I mean, wouldn't it be nice that if someone mentions "release" or something in a new post, he will automatically receive a reply saying: "When it's done. Thread locked."
I don't know anything about forum scripts, but there is a bad words filter? So maybe....
Would help keeping the devs and PTs from getting frustrated. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

If you are so angry, annoyed, or frusterated with waiting, why wait? Go away and do something else. There's obviously no point hanging out at the forums all day, because you know what you'll find. On the other hand, if you're off doing somehting else you're less likely to become anxious for NS to be released, because you are occupied and perhaps somewhat content.

Have you ever thought to ignore those who post asking when NS will be ready, or expressing their dislike for one thing or another? Try it.

I've hung around the NS Forums for a long time and this is the first time I've ever felt like joining just to say something.  You all who flame the guy who wrote this thread should chill.  #1 Your a liar if you aren't completely anxious for the release of this game.  You'd like more than anything for it to come out and want to tell the devs the same thing.  You've just know that this would happen if you did. #2, like some other people said in this thread, if you dont like what a person posts, close your eyes and go to the next topic.  Its like some of you just want to get your little flame in. <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

I'm sorry to be the antagonist, but my entire community agrees that Natural Selection has postponed itself for quite some time. It is not that we want to play badly, but we believe that the development team had the priorities in this modification a little off, but well intended.

Day of Defeat, one of the most played Modifications, was utterly no fun at the time of Beta 1. It offered nothing that Return to Castle Wolfenstien couldn't. It lacked originality in all aspects except the World War Two theme. Yet it got out there, people played it and had another spasm of joy everytime a new patch was released.

Natural Selection is not yet ready to be released. I concur that there are many technical issues that needed to be solved, and new coding to be thought up. The problem is that things were done in reverse priority. When I last checked, Dr. Hugo was redoing the Level 5 and Level 3 animations. He wanted to be the person to redo the Level 4 animations. How can you say that a Mod is close to release when it is not yet playable? I applaud the Natural Selection team for their discoveries, about the commander mode, the in-game particle editing system, the NSTR and a myrad of other wonderful idea's.

The problem is, Natural Selection is running into a horrible gray area called hype. To the casual person, Natural Selection is going the same way Team Fortress 2 and The Wastes are. Always in a constant state of "Look at this spiffy animation" and "The last playtest was really good! But we need to iron out a few bugs..."

Every day we follow Natural Selection, it seems as if we're getting more screens and a further release date. Some of us have grown weary of this. I would tell you to release NS as soon as you have eliminated all bugs (which I believe to only be the commander voice precedence) and ship it to gamers. We can live with a small patch to fix the Jetpack artwork or somhting else minor.

<b>But unfortunatly</b>, I believe that if the Queen of England told you that she'd pay you a million pounds to release Natural Selection today in all playability, you couldn't do it. I do not think that the guts of the game are enough in place to qualify this game as "completed". Back in June you said that all you needed was a few finishing touches, as Natural Selection was feature complete. Since when are animations and models finishing touches?

I realize that you are taking time out of your hectic life to publish this to whiney people like me. I also realize that you want to put your best foot foreward. I just don't want you to be dissapointed if you wait another month to "polish" things and it isn't accepted as the "perfect game" you wished it to be. Perfect Games are not developed, they're patched. And still, there is always somthing could be better. Some of us are tired of hearing "when it's done" when Mods like CS and DoD are not "done" by most standards. Are we waiting for your unreasonable standards? Give us meat. Worry about the garnish later.

I want NS to come out just as much as anyone, but putting up little patches is annoying and tedious, half the time people don't even realize there is this little patch that came out that changes one teeny little thing, I would rather the first release be as complete and bug free as possible,  Little patches do not help, look at AHL. lots of people get beta 5 and try to play without knowing there is a 5.1 because its just a little patch.  It's bad to release little patches. sooooo very bad.

Freemantle: And what exactly do you base this upon? Have you seen the current state of NS? Have you heard anything other than second hand stories that may or may not be true? I am sorry, but to me its very important to see a mod released in a very good stead from the word go. This is not TFC. This is not a deathmatch style game, this is (at least partially) an RTS, and things need to be balanced. I am sure you would be the first person to put the team down if the game seemed unbalanced shortly after release. If there were exploits or problems, you would be the first to point them out for sure, and DEMAND that a patch be brought out.

"When its done" does not correspond to NS as a whole, the whole picture that Flayra has had in his mind from the beginning, because it has changed. "When its done" means that NS will be released as soon as it is playable, balanced and complete to a good enough degree to warrant the hype that it so well deserves. The Dev team are nearly there. Have some patience, and stopp being so negative.

To use your analogy, how would it feel if, after curring through the most succulent piece of meat every seen, it was totally raw in the middle, unfit for consumption?
  • FreemantleFreemantle Join Date: 2002-06-16 Member: 783Members
Good point Moebius, but I was thinking more on a Day of Defeat scale. They should release it bug-free to the best of their knowledge, and release a Beta 1.1 patch if several game-altering or system compatability issues arise.

The fact of the matter is, no matter how long they playtest it, there will be unforseen bugs that will need to be addressed eventually. I don't want to see patches like in Sciece and Industry, but a 1.1 and possibly 1.2 patch would be fine. If DoD and Buzzybots can get away with it, anyone can.

[edit]Fam: I don't speak this on merely my opinion. I love you to death but I'm going to fight my point. My community here in michigan (about 30+ laners) have been following Natural Selection just as long or longer than I have. They do not take nearly as much interest in it, but they ask about every week "So what's new in Natural Selection?" jokingly. One of them, Charles, has been following NS since the old Ultimate Bulletin Board days. He says that he is tired of waiting for Natural Selection and will go somwhere else. Many of the other players agree with him as well. Their loss as far as I am concerned. What I am concerned about is Dr. Hugo telling me that he is working on animations well over two months after Natural Selections feature completeness. I am not pulling all this out of my butt. This is the second time I have felt stongly about somthing Natural Selection releated. I feel that this arguement is heading the same direction as my last one did. None of you wish to argue with me so you would rather lock the post then "get feelings hurt". I'm tougher than you think, talk to me.[/edit]

I think freemantle makes a good point, if the game works smothly and is even to were its fun then release it and then patch have the 1.1 patch and so on. Its not hard to see stuff like this thread going on with the <u><i>lack</u></i> of updates on the main news page its not hard to get a littel unnerved at the dev team, because the community dosent know whats going on with he mod.

And they will release a bug free version, if they do think it has none. Right now, there are still OBVIOUS bugs that need to be fixed. And the main thing right now is balance, no one has tried to make anything like this before, and we are slowly homing in on a happy medium for all of the weapons/upgrades/abilities whereas it isn't too easy for the new guys to use, but the hard core gamers can still enjoy it and not be too strong with it. The whole NS model is so different, all this balancting takes time. To prove this, one small change in balance once threw a whole weekend of playtests off, aliens won all but 2 games, from chaning a few values by about 5 points.

I could also go on abou "they owe you nothing", but that's just too common. What I have to say here is, god yes you have waited a long time, about a year now for the guys that have been around since the good old UBB days. One year... um, ok. Go complain anbout Blizzard and time tables then where they have fulltime, paid workers and ability to code from scratch and not have to man-handle the HL engine code. I know it's taking a long time, but you guys are not the only ones who deperately want to see it released. But, as Fam mentioned, first impressions mean a lot to most people, and we need to make sure EVERYONE'S first impression of NS is of a quality, fun mod. And to make it fun for everyone, time is the factor unfortunately.

Also, your comment about the animations being done. They are small touch ups in the whole shceme of things of coding commander mode, twice over, making all of the models, making all of the textures, coding all the weapons, animating all the weapons and having 8 maps made. Since bugs still must be fixed, why not have the animations fixed up and made better, since the animators can't code?

Hype, well. If we don' post shots and little videos, people on the forums scream for more, and then people come along (like you) and blame us for hyping it too much. It's like those x10 camera ads on the 'net. We all hate them, but who doesn't know of x10 now...? <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> Maybe we have not found a happy balance between when to post news, and not to, but it seems no matter what we do, people want more/less. Just look at the readyroom, it has not been updated as constantly because the current stuff mostly being fixed is code.

About your comment about DoD. If DoD was SO bad on the first release like you are implying, then why was 2.0 inticipated so much? They must of obviously released at leas a quality mod, or else it would just fall into the abyss of other realism mods. To make sure NS doesn't fall in also, time is needed unfortunately. Going along this, if the first release is good enough, patches and other things are not needed, which any 56K'er would like <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

And finally, you said your group of LAN people is getting sick of waiting. Well, you can go away from NS and play other stuff. Heck, all the guys in IRC seem to have little problem waiting as we (including PT'ers), go play other mods like SI, Boxwars, Buzzybots, TFC, CS, etc while we wait. It helps to play and have fun!

    Hope this helps you!
