Ha+gl Train

<div class="IPBDescription">better than HA+HMG train?</div> I just played a game on a public server, it was 10 on 10, i think the map was eclipse, and it was a rather long game of about an hour or so. the aliens managed to get 3 hives while the marines got full HA.. what's surprising was that the comm gave the entire team HAs, GLs, and Welders, and it fared so much better against the heavier classes than if we had HMGs.

when the comm gave out the toys, we were attacked by 2 onos, 2 fades and a bunch of xenocide-crazy skulks. the onoses started stomping the place like mad, while the fades were flying around trying to hit us. but since we all had GLs, we killed one of the onoses in about 10 seconds as he was trying to eat someone (i think), and was unable to run away in time before being bombarded by about 10 grenades in a few seconds and the other fades then started blinking away. then we went to hump the armory as we didn't have time to get ammo as we were under attack when we were given the GLs. Then the 2 fades and 1 onos came back again, and we (9 of us) all volleyed grenades at the aliens. the whole place was filled with explosions, and the 2 fades tried to retreat, but were blocked by the onos and they were hit by more grenades, and both the fades died and the onos redempted(annoying isn't it).

then we proceeded to assault the hives after welding one another and picking up medpacks. we cleared all the hive rooms spectacularly, and we even managed to down a lerk flying about by mass firing at it. onoses and fades who tried to attack us died almost instantly after being bombarded with grenades, and while we were reloading, some skulks attacked us, but we welded them to death <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> . the only problem was that we ran out of ammo quite a few times (comm had to do an ammo pack spam more than medpacks), and 2 of the HAs killed themselves with GLs..whee

So would you all think that HA+GL train is better than a mixed or HA+HMG train?

    Well, one must think that mixed is better. GL is a bit hard to hit skulks with, for me anyways. But some GLs are great to mix in for some structure killing abilitys and against the large lifeforms (in 2.1 anyways) GL might be quite destructive as they are quite easy to hit. Still i think that going for a mixed team is the way to go.

    It was a miracle that you did win the game. Fades should have just acid spammed you while skulks doing xeno+leap attacks on you. etc. etc. You should have lost that game. I mean really..

    Full teched marines tend to pretty much own the aliens. So a mixed up ha team would have been better. Maybe a couple of jetpack guys too. Mixed is always better..

    Sounds like fun, but I would still throw an HMG or 2 into the mix just in case.

    I did all GL squad once and it's "stupidly effective". The aliens were crying "we need FF enabled!!" But I did have a JP + HMG or 2 flying overhead. And it only worked if they were all together.

    there's nothing more frustrating than dodging your way into a group of marines or even worse; a badly guarded marine base and having to get the heck out of there again just because someone drops a grenade in the area knowing there's no consequence to their team members. There's no real thought, aim nor skill to that strategy yet it's amazingly effective and essentially denies skulks and fades from entering close combat with the groups walking through the fire and stops almost any stealthy base assault dead in it's tracks (usually along with the fades/skulks/lerks involved).

    Aliens have to get close to really fight effectively and the most simple of grenadier tactics can make it incredibly difficult; that's why I always go for them first if I can pick them out from the crowd =P

    sure alone there's nothing wrong with them and I've got no qualms about vent clearance, building destruction or area denial (like building a wall of boom-boom outside their base) but using it as a magic fire shield inside a base or a group is amazingly annoying and if it was tournament mode it'd be irresponsible as heck thanks to FF.

    and 2-3 HMG's to cover the grenaders from skulks

    lol yea, FF needs to be on for explosives..or why not make them just damage each other's armor? like if someone hits a HA teamate with GL once, his armor would drop from 290 to 100 or smth like that..

    Ever had a Jetpack and a gl? it is RIDICIUSLY easy to kill everything smaller than onos. U basically just drop the nades under ur feet and start flying. Reloading midair while everything underneath u explodes.
    Repeat as nesseary.

    Also, u can do this while firing nades directly into your Base or your HA train without consequences.

    That is cheap.

    I like the GL very much. Its cool, handy and its a weapon with a very important purpose as sqad support.
    But it should definately harm marine structures and players.

    look, the number of lamers out there who would nab the GL and then end the game by killing his team/base?
    This would make it so that GLs NEVER were ussed (the chance that the smacktard gets the GL)

    However, remeber that GLs DO harm yourself.

    so the general solution to this is a skulk rush, as once you are in close the gls just aint that good anymore.


    But yah, if you get a marine team working together and the REZ to outfit 10 HA/GL/Welder.... well gg aliens

    Right now GL's are retarded in how they are used....

    I personally think they should deal only 25% of their total damage to smaller classes.

    "How Gls magically can do loads of damage to buildings, but the damage is magically reduced when aiming at skulks."

    To be fair though its not really an issue. A HA GL on his own is toast for even a single (half decent) skulk.

    If the HA GL is in a group with HA HMG then its pretty much game over anyway and you may as well F4 instead of wasting everyones time by letting them kill every last critter.

    Unfortuately not everyone is half decent, and your certainly not "half decent" with the gl, four shots at close range you should be able to hit a skulk easily.

    Plus, any "Half-decent" heavy will switch to his knive when the GL is empty, and its quite impossible for a single skulk to kill a knifing heavy unless there is a TREMENDUS difference in skill.

    Actually i have, and i prefer having a hmg/sg rather than hope that the onos is dumb enough to stay in the range of those grenade explosions. But hey, you know what? The who ever started the post said they had all heavys, not JP. against 3 hive aliens. I mean huh?

    Anyhows if they would have had JP's .., JP GL < 3 hive slkulks.. Good Luck with that dude.

    the self damage thing is slightly annoying, althgoh its a decent penelty, i just hate it when a ohnos is rushing me, i fire a grenade, it eyther goes THROGH the ohnos and bounces back at me, or bounces OFF it, into my face, killing me.

    maybe i'm just unlucky.

    remember GLs ARE contact nades (ie if you MANAGE to hit the fn lerk it will spitch)

    with the new hitboxes in 2.1 gl's just roast onos simply b/c every hit is dead on.

    problem is catpoker, nobodies too bothered about FF on bullet weapons really, just a massive ball of scorching fire with a concussive shockwave filled with shredding shrapnel that turns alien health and buildings to ash leaving marines and their structures mysteriously uneffected.
    Am I the only one who finds that setting off high explosives in your base without any fear of consequence goes against the 'gritty' atmosphere NS is after? =/

    At least with bullets you can say that the gun has an onboard FF processor which stops the bullet from being fired when a friendly is detected in the projectiles predicted path, but how nano machines stop...

    a) shrapnel (shards of metal? not very high tech)
    b) concussion (big boom that knocks you down/off your feet and causes internal injuries)
    c) heat damage (what that nice red stuff is)

    ... to very specific targets is beyond me. They could disassemble the shards mid-flight I suppose but heat is basically energy in the form of molecular friction and would would make life very turbulant for any nanites in the general area. Concussion? how the heck do you stop that with nano-machines?

    bleh... I'm just ranting for the sake of it now amn't I? ^^;

    if theres any building nearby then just get by it wit the gl and if he follows buh bye skulkah, after all its not hard to hit a building at point blank range wit a gl....

    Bad news Gemmy. I totally support full friendly-fire damage (Or maybe just half, because full would kill all HA's in just a couple grenades), but guess what?


    Mines no longer damage marines.


    That's right, I read the changelog on readyroom.org. It was apparently a BUG that mines killed marines.

    A HA/GL train with 1-2 HA/Shotty are DEVASTATING

    GLers are the ultimate Marine long range weapon, Shotties are the ultimate marine short range weapon... throw a HMG in the mix and you win :-p

    God I'm getting so sick of NS. First we have idiot-lamer-proof grenades and mines, so now marines can just coat the walls with mines in their base and be fine, or cover each other in mines and defend.

    Then there's bonsai-base electricity.

    Lerks loose spikes for bite (Probable to change, but unlikely)

    Finally, commander-droppable kitty-packs so they can sap your health for doing something wrong.

    What's next? Welders that do 12,000,000,000 damage a tick and shoot through walls like a siege?



    God, Flayra, can you at LEAST do us the service of ASKING us what we think of something before just throwing it in half-assed?
