VALVe's Steam will allow easy and automatic updates for players with fast connections. For Steam-users, downloading patches, maps and new content will be a thing of the past

Straight from the front page. I didn't know either but that helped me figure it out...Sorta.

it sounds like a program that downloads patches, maps, etc. when you connect to a server, but then again, i have no idea

sooo.. what? it's just a program that will allow you to click a button and download the patches etc?

"With Steam, developers are given integrated tools for direct-content publishing, flexible billing, ensured-version control, anti-cheating, anti-piracy, and more"

sooo.. what? now i have to pay for them to do what i could do on my own anyway? i'm not very excited about that.

NO. Right NOW, its for downloading patches. Later, it will allow you to buy OTHER games, without that CD crap. Just buy, then download.

that's lame, the reason why I buy games is so I don't have to waste time downloading them

It's for us broadband users. Say I want a new game that has just been released. Instead of going to the store and trying to find a store that still has a copy I just fire up STEAM, chose the game, pay for it, and then play it like 10 min later. (downloading CS completly only takes a couple of minutes) Right now of coarse it just has HL mods, and it's in free public beta.

I'm amazed at how many people don't understand Steam. Remember, it's a GOOD thing. VERY good. This is actually a HUGE thing for NS and I'm very excited.

I was pretty excited when i heard, cause what it really means to me is I dont have to wait in that frickin file planet line forever. I just installed steam just to see if maybe... sooner then we think, but not that soon.

actualy steam is realy SLOW in downloading the files
it goes at same speeds where u downloads maps from a server
the only nice thing about steam is the auto anti cheat update for the servers. and the tracker for the steam client.
to bad the tracker is not standalone
