i looked on the steam site and google, and all i could find to dl were huge files w steam, tf and cs, deathmatch and that kind of thing. where can i find plain and pure steam - just steam, no mods or anything, so i dont have to waste time and hard disk space?

the general idea is that the pure steam installer (just under a meg) is pure crap. it comes with nothing, so the very first thing it'll do is download its upgrades

by "dowload its upgrades" i mean freeze, hickup, stall, hard-reboot your PC... you name it, it does it

but, try getting it off of ftp.blueyonder.co.uk

Not true. They updated it on the main site, I'm pretty sure:

BTW- this belongs in Off topic.

Get the huge one, all my friends that tried the easy way (the 500 Kb file) all had problem, I went for the 700 Mb file, and had no problem with it whatsoever

They offer one with the HL-only cache, which is all you need for Natural Selection. Apparently some have had success with the base 500KB installer converting their existing Half-Life directory over... personally, I just went with downloading the version with-cache to save on hassles.

(NS is not Steam. NS will ride on Steam, but this is like posting default Half-Life problems in the Natural Selection General Discussion forum.)

I installed the 500kB version and it converted my old HL installation over no worries. I'm running NTFS so that might influence it somewhat.

bygames, blueyonder's multiplayer games service to close

Just over two years after the launch of blueyonder's online gaming service, we are sad to announce that bygames will be closing on 5th November. The decision has been made by Telewest as part of a wider strategy of focusing on it's core business of internet service provision, whilst using other specialist companies to provide content and applications.

Subscribers to bygames will not be charged for their final month of service, so everyone will be able to keep on fragging for free until the power is turned off in November.

Blueyonder customers who have already paid their October monthly subscription to the gaming service will be automatically refunded on their next bill.

The bygames team would like to thank everyone who helped build bygames into an award-winning service especially the excellent volunteer officials - without their time and effort few of the achievements of bygames would have been possible.

If you would like to comment on this news please use the sticky forum thread on this subject, which will be updated with answers to questions.

The 500kb installer DOES work - for some people. I myself had no trouble, I just downloaded everything via Steam (this is why you want broadband kids), leaving my WON-installation be, and it all runs smoothely now.

Personally, I tried no cache, HL cache, CS cache and full cache.

No cache worked the first time, but I had to reinstall and failed, downloaded HL cache and CS cache. Still didn't work. Went on steam forum, asked what was needed to fix, they said get full install, it's the one with the least problems. I did. It works, it really does. The full cache is the one with the least bugs, it seems.
