Wth My Ping Is Running Amok!

Just to clarify: I don´t have that problem with NS alone, but with most other mods too. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Whenever I try to join a game my ping is fine for a short while, ranging from 50 - 100. Then all of a sudden it goes up to >500, down to 100 again and then randomly up or down. Any help on that problem would be greatly appreciated.
My specs:
Windows XP (pro)
Legacy audio-device
ACPI-Uniprozessor-PC
Star Force GeForce FX 5200
VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
512 MB RAM
No EAX activated
Using Half-Life retail
I am running this in D3D, it won´t let me play with OpenGL

Also Check your rates. Not too sure what they should be hopefully someone else can post them for you because i got some to do my rates <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
What servers are you joining, ones near your area? Joining a non local server is DODGy even with DSL
With D3D, my fps was around 25~40 and it choked a lot!
Then onto OpenGL, my fps maxed out at a constant 75fps and I had no more lag spikes!
and it worked! My ping was < 100 for the whole game!
Well, then I tried it with NS... but as soon as I tried to join a game the following error appeared: "Your graphic card is not compatible with the selected OpenGL-mode!" >_<
Ah well, but at least I can continue playing SC and TFC now. Thx for the help so far and please help me on this problem too. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
