This really isn't the place for this post but...

Go to "Configuration". Go to "Audio" Hold the knob under the words "Background Volume" (Or some such, you will know it when you see it.) And reduce it (pull it left) until it is at a value you like. (Something that is not too loud.)

greg i think i know what you are talking about and i would also like to know...its the noise that you get in certain places like power soli hive and such hives like that...the sounds is very loud and i have not yet found a way to lower it...the only fear now is that if i lower the volume or cut it all together i might be called a cheater for turning the volume off...gg

Stopsound used to work, but I don't think it does anymore. You'd have to test it. However, that sound is intentional, and is supposed to put you at a disadvantage.

It does. However, I believe the sound starts up again when you run away far enough so that you don't hear it, and then run back, it starts again. It stops all sound at THAT second, but if they're done again it can do nothing.

There isn't. It's there for a reason.. so you can't hear as easily. It's a mapping decision.

I mean, what would happen with a Marine team set up with their environmental audio turned off? They would have a MAJOR advantage. They'd be able to hear any little click of a claw, burble, or chuckle by a Kharaa in perfect detail. Which is one reason most Hiverooms are noisy.. to cover Skulk footstep sounds, allowing them to ambush an incoming Marine assault force.

Man... I always think the new maps are too quiet. The OLD hives of ns_nothing were incredibly loud in comparison.

It's the ambience. IMO, removing that sound would be like making bright white models. And boy are quiet maps ever boring.

My best advice though would be to get used to it. Because once you train your ear to the sounds of skulk feet or what have you, you won't have a problem with it. And you don't need a good quality pair of headphones to do it either (though I would recommend them) as I just use my crappy old speakers since my headphones busted.

That's just my opinion though.

The only "background noise" I have real problems with is the constant voicecomm chatter. Sure, voicecomm is great, but sometimes you have those critical moments where you don't need people screaming at you and lowering the general sound volume, you need silence to listen for those skulks. Solution? Place a "master mute" command in the game that silences voicecomm as long as it's activated (so you could bind it like the voicecomm: hold button and everyone's muted, release to let 'em speak again). Please?

Will allow you to turn down people over voice comm down at the touch of a button, press again to restore.

You can use the stopsound command to switch off some background noise, a lot of players have that bound to the same key used to show scores.

Flayra added the ability for mappers to use mp3s in their maps instead of normal HL wav. The stopsound command does not work on mp3s. So some sounds you can mute, others you can't.

I turn sounds off whenever I can. I hit stopsound maybe 1000 times per round.
There are places where I get HEADACHE when I hear the ambience sound more than a 10 seconds, like power silo hive or maintenance in ns_hera.
Or phasegates... I HATE the phasegate sound, it makes me crasy. I think i hit the stopsound key more often than the jump key

If the background ambience is too loud, i recommend turning your sound down. As Talesin stated, it's defined by the mapper as to give everyone the same advantage / disadvantage.

voice_eax "1"
voice_overdrive "1"
voice_overdrivefadetime "0"

are 3 useful commands, they improve voice comm quality (imo) and they stop the game sound from being lowered when someone speaks
