Final space station nothing update.

Or something.
Under normal circumstances, I probably wouldn't even bother posting about today's ns_nothing screenshot update at TALD (I actually just brought all the shots up-to-date), but considering that:

(a.) It took me several hours to take, resize, save, resize again, save, and upload 32 separate images.

(b.) The shots that have been replaced were terribly old and out of date... the newest ones being from months ago.

And (c.), the fact that updates to the site have been so sparse lately, it's not like anyone is going to go there on their own...

I sorta feel the need to make sure at least someone looks at them!

That, and about half of the areas pictured probably haven't even been seen by anyone outside the playtest/dev group. Shots are here.

Again, please excuse my blatantly pointless post (Especially considering the fact that I'm not even looking for any sort of constructive criticism here - the level is done.), but hey... this is the last screenshot post you're going to see from me on the level.

Err... yeah.

Great. I think i needn't repeat that i love your lightning(?). But the last 3 pics in the first columne have no enlarge-links...

Oops. Thanks for the heads-up, Ramses/Jedi... I'm suprised the rest of the shots worked considering the typo I made there. :/

At any rate, it's fixed now.

Edit: Oh, and thanks for the link, Genie! I'll look into that.

That just has to make you feel good when you say it!

Glad to see that your problems before the mapping deadline were taken care of, and very glad to see that you have finished. I look foward to playing on it!

wow, you've really pushed the limits of the HL engine on this one, it looks really atmospheric.

    Great work

Ken, you already know what I think of Space Station Nothing ... I just hope reality doesn't give you such a hard time with your next opus.

lightin has been improved :O and it was already the best one :O i love all the light effects u always make, the only complaint i can say is that sometimes i see bright spots and i cant see the light, anyways i gotta check the map myself, because the light could be hidden between pipes or something and i cant notice that in a screenshot.....
    NICE JOB

The lighting is great, except in places there are too many beams against the wall and it ends up looking a little silly. But the lighting atmosphere is great otherwise. A few textures here and there seem a tad lowres...and maybe the lights in the first few pictures are a little too intense...they look like magnesium high power lights cause they're pure white and very bright. maybe dim them down a little and make them a little off-white

dont worry guys, the lighting is fine (not too harsh) in-game. you will be pleasantly surprised.

this is my fav ns map =)

    gutterclutch:
The lights actually are off-white. Very grey in fact. I'm just kinda bad at screenshot adjusting... I don't have PS, so it's not like following that formula is an option. I just adjust things until it looks the same as the real thing. Sometimes I'm a bit off. Sometimes I'm a lot off. The lights are fairly harsh though, yeah. At least moreso than most HL levels. That was my intent, and design base for the entire level (well, until later in its development). You're comment about there being too many lights at one time: Fair arguement. I guess that one might be a personal preference though. Thanks for the comments there, but as I said, the level really isn't going to go through any more changes.

    Battousai:
Most white/grey light in the level comes from sources which are concealed behind bars that are parallel with the ceiling. That's why you can't see them in most shots. It makes more sense ingame.

    Ken,

I don't know what to say. Your work on ns_nothing is truly amazing. Seeing all those pictures next to each other just makes my eyes bug out, no matter how much I've seen it. You've busted your butt to get this done, and the fruits of your labor are plain to see. Great job.

I've been kind of purposefully staying away from the General Discussion and Mapping forums to keep up my hunger for the release. I haven't seen any pics of Nothing for some time (maybe a couple months) but the improvements are phenomenal. We should come up with some kind of NS award for master mapping just so we can give one to Ken.

Really man, I haven't even been inside this map and I love it. Congratulations on a job well done.

Well... I started the level in January or February of this year. I scrapped most of the level except one room (The Great Viaduct - The hive room with the bridge), and slowly worked on it with a new focus in mind for several months afterwards. Then, after scrapping half the level again (man, am I glad I did) I produced a bit more and slowed back down again. To be quite honest, a large sum of the work was done in the couple weeks before the deadline. Including taking half the level, rotating it, and connecting it to a different part of the level in order to help connectivity and overall focus.

In other words, 6 or 7 months of relaxed working with a few weeks of frantic hair pulling at the end.
