System shock 2 is a pure example. Not many bought this game, so it just went away. I got a copy of it with a pack of games. Now the only way to buy it will be though some stupid on-line service.

if you want to try something completely different, play Uplink. Its a hacking game, where you break into fictional servers and do all sorts of fun things, dong contract jobs to make cash to buy better equipment, its quite possibly the most thrilling nonviolent game ever conceived. (if you consider hacking someone's criminal record and making the local police arrest him for $5000 nonviolent)
Also, try looking at that "Home of the Underdogs" place. They got some warez I don't exactly agree with, but they show a list of some GREAT games that never really got popular.
Ugh Tresspaaser it was good until you actually had to aim the arm and everything, i have Alpha centurai but it looks really confusing, is it a game where you can build armies ?

I thought everyone knew about SM:AC....... I have it, and SM:ACX and I have to say both were very good purchases.
You can get SM:AC now on budget, the expansion is harder to find, and some would say "unbalancing" but I love it.
SS2 is still illegal, and IIRC the Underdogs site has one lacking the videos because its a CD rip. You can still buy SS2 from a variety of sites, in multipacks or separately. Indeed, I'm planning a purchase myself, heheh.

When i first got my PC i had this game called "Sub Culture". It's kinda like Freelancer, only in a Tiny baby submarine underwater. You had to go and take some missions from some of the races, and then you could by upgrades from your ship. Like, at first you've got this vacuum thing which will let you suck up small things into your cargo, but then you can get a grappling hook (for picking up cigarrette ends, which are half the size of your ship) and a magnet for picking up coins etc...
It really is a great and adictive game, but i've never met anyone else who's heard of it

Alpha Centari... That one was interesting, it left a wonderful first impression (hence the 98% it got on PCG) but it got boring in about a week, not really worth buying, if you are going to get a turn based strategy game, get Civilisation 2 or something.

I played myst long ago, and I accidentally solved one of the last puzzles (That cabinet on the dock with the paper in it) first thing in the game. Therefore, I was watching the ending about 3 minutes into the game, not understanding what the heck was going on.
Then I played the whole game and realized what happened.
Civ 2 is ok but I prefer the better AI and research tree of Alpha Centauri. In fact I still rate AC over Civ III. Lets see how the new Civ III expansion pack changes that, hehe.
The Close Combat series was always very fun. Startopia and Dungeon Master 2 were also funny, enjoyable games. Star Wars: Rebellion and Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate were two strategy games everyone should have played, and Majesty was a unique fantasty themed RTS. Warlords: Battlecry is also a good fantasy themed RTS. Rounding out my list is Crimson Skies, the best arcade flight sim EVER MADE. EVER!
