Get a 9800 pro. Clear all your old drivers. yadda yadda. this should be in tech help

No. The magic words here are (in console or your userconfig.cfg)

    ati_npatch 0
    ati_subdiv 0

You have Truform turned on. It's enabled by default in Half-Life, and it's a HUGE framerate hit as it by default triples the number of polygons on-screen at once, AND has to figure out how to smooth them (additional calculation). Turn off TruForm, and you'll get a nice pretty 100fps so long as vsync is turned off, and max_fps is set to 100. . As well, with that card you've got the beef to handle better texture filtering, so toss in the following line too:

    gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear

As well, make sure Fast Writes are turned off in your BIOS, for added stability. (Fast Writes are asinine for anything above AGP 2x, anyway.)

    max_fps 100

    ^^ most important part ^^

and arn't you going to move this [to tech support]?

Do you run any backround programs?

How much RAM do you have?

My old p3-1000 system took a massive framerate hit when going from a GF2 Ti to an ATI 9800 Pro. Nothing I tried (including the settings mentioned above) could push my framerate over around 40-50 whereas I was used to 70-80 typically on the GF2 card.

I'm on a 2.4G P4 now so it really isn't an issue anymore (solid 100 fps most of the time) but I'd really like to know if anyone has ever found a real solution to the problem.

Seriously, turn off Fast Writes mode (if they're on) in the BIOS, and use those CONSOLE COMMANDS. If you only turn it off in the drivers, HL will *continue* to do the calculations, but you won't see a darn thing. It's the HL engine at fault.

the console commands do not help much. the problem with ati are with their drivers. they are very cpu intensive. anything under 2.4g gets a fps hit. lower than 2.0 and its real bad

and if you're stuck at 60fps because of winxp, download reforce here:

    http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/

and set _every single_ display setting to auto-populate, then restart your comp.

    I hope that helps.

    Cuz if did for me

A problem with NS? maybe.... I was just playing cs and tfc and found out that not only was I getting max framerates, but I could also enable 4aa and get max framerates. Ns on the other hand is going pretty slowly.. especially when I walk by the marine structures... any ideas.. maybe its a 9600/ns compatibilty issue as I noticed another post about slow fps in ns...
ps I did re-format and re-install os/drivers with no avail
