Number of servers?

As in, how many?
Just a quick question. Do we have any idea of the number of servers that should be running NS when it releases? Of course, this number will go down a bit after the first few days, as it always does with any new demo or mod. Then again, perhaps it will go *up* with NS, which would be very nice.

I was just wondering if I'm going to have to fight to find a good server, or if it shouldn't be that bad.

Finding a good pinging server playing a good map for Firearms can be a little tough, but not too bad. WizardWars, on the other hand...

Well, there is another forums for this. But MonsE has assured us that he'll get NS hooked up with some servers, other forum goers will too. So I don't think it'll be much of a problem.

No, this forum is just fine for asking about servers. The other forum is for discussions on running a server (such as AdminMod settings, var settings, adminship, and the like).

Welcome to the Forums Twilight, if you haven't been already. I've been semi away for a while (and still will be for a bit), so I may have missed you come in.

I'm sure that places like Jolt and BarrysWorld (for those European peeps) will be running NS servers pretty much from the word go - it'll be a very popular mod, and they'll want to hook into the possible revenue this'll bring (clan servers and whatnot).

Deathwish, popularity doesnt always influence barry's world, i have seen their servers for mods i had only heard about once before.

Well that kinda confirms that they'll have a few servers running Tychoo

But popularity does change how many they have, hence their huge number of CS servers

If they have 1 NS server, which is packed to the brim 24/7 they'll set upo a few more...

Ja, I didn't say they wouldn't have any. And well, a billion CS servers is a no-brainer.

I did a topic just like this twilight and some people said they are going to have plenty of servers. Like a Linux ns server and stuff. There will be a lot to choose from like what monsierevil said with the mirrors.

Of course, as SharpSword indicated, there will be single servers operated by someone who happens to have a T3 and has a PC going spare along with the big server operators.

Of course, the thing about BarrysWorld now is that it's subscription based for some things, like renting servers. That could influence the popularity of a mod like NS at BW.

I admin a different game for barrysworld and I will be pimping verra hard for a server , I will start poking the head up people as well for a concrete answer but Barrysworld is now subscribers only the details of which can be found at their site , jolt i dont know about , they smell funny but probably will

and blueyonder I know will have an ns server(s) as I'm gonna be joint head admin blokey

And i think the server numbers will go up and up as NS should and will imo rock

Good! I figured that with such a large group of people waiting for NS to come out that there would be enough servers, but I have depressing thoughts of the release night only having 20 servers, and all full. Not that this would happen, but I feel better now anyway.

Mol, thanks for the welcome. I just signed up a day or so ago, although I've been lurking for a few months now...

PS Incidentally, what sort of bandwitdth is required to run a HL server? Isn't it about 3.5 kilobytes per person or so? I just wonder because I've got DSL and a spare machine. However, I fear that the upstream wouldn't be enough for more than a 6-8 player server.

One of the PTs has an ADSL connection with a 128KB upload cap; he says it's no good for hosting more than a 6-player HL server or so.

Hmmm. I've got about 250-350 kbs upstream, generally, and about 500-600 kbs down, so maybe I could pull off a small server. This would be my first server ever, for any mod. Guess I'll have a lot to learn...

Ah well, that's the fun, eh?
