You Know You've Been Mapping Too Much When...

1) You can tell how many units high and wide a block is just by a screenshot.
2) You see the world as textured blocks and polygons.
3) You know the exact order of all the Point Entities and made up a song so you'll never forget them.
4) You Ask to be excused to go to the restroom, really you whip out your laptop and finish those pipes in MS...
5) You Have Dreams About Zoner
6) You no longer go by your real name. Call me ATi, Dark, ATi.
7) You haven't eaten in a week. (That would interrupt the mapping!?!?!?!?!)
8) You haven't slept for a week. (Whereby when you do sleep you dream of Zoner.)
9) You haven't taken a shat in a week. (Hold it in, hold it in.)

Feel free to add some. I was bored.

You're looking into making a cd-rw that contains your map editor, half life with the ns mod, and the batch compiler so you can literally map on any windows box you find..... and you want to keep a floppy disk with you just in case they don't have a burner. (can you tell this is true for me)

You walk into the computer lab your classes are held in and immediatley think you need to get to know the distributed compiling tools better....as well as develop a friendship with that network's administrator.

You ask your shop teacher what the best compiling options for your new table are.
• ReeseReese Join Date: 2003-05-08 Member: 16143Members
you ask XP-Cagey to work on some better compiling tools for you table.... as the shop keeper's tools aren't good enough and don't easily support modular design, not to mention bump mapping.

Heh... I have my hl+ns install... hl registry settings... and a few other files all on a CD that I brought with me on my carry on luggage all the way from New Zealand to Portugal when I came here for a year long OE in Europe (I'm based here and will shoot off to other countries randomly).

I've gone to coastlines, stared out over the ocean, admired the way the sun reflected off the water, and promptly began imagining how I could reproduce this effect in HL2's engine.... I saw the same shiny reflecting off a bumpy glass as I was drinking water, and once again started thinking about to make the cup in a map editor...

I see dirty piping on a wall that nobody else even notices, and I think about how cool it would look on a map... I look out the balcony of this top-story apartment, and wonder how cool those roofing tiles would look in an outdoor map... I've walked into a mall before and thought to myself "damn my r_speeds would kill me if I tried to map this..."

One or two of my clan mates back in New Zealand used to call Revenge even when we had lunch in person...

I need help...

Ten ways to tell you've been in mapping for too long:

1. You remember when Worldcraft 2.0 was released
2. You want to change the number of radiosity bounces in your house
3. You believe that an object's center of gravity is an ORIGIN brush
4. You de-compile every last VALVe map to count the number of every entity
5. You start to realize that all politicians use the same scripted_sentences
6. You wish your old teachers had a "Gag" flag
7. You're surprised to learn that "quark" is a type of particle
8. You introduce your spouse as monster_spouse
9. You curse the fact that your life has no "Check for Problems" feature
10. You're re-arranging furniture and desperately search for an UNDO option when the room looks bad

The Hammer 10 Commandments

1. I am thy Hammer. Thou shalt have no other editor beside me, unless VALVe gets a portion of the credit thereof.

2. Thy Hammer is a Quake-editor-based single-user editor. Thou shalt not attempt to force Hammer to generate random maps, multitask, or do intelligent things on its own.

3. Thou shalt never have more than 10 WADs at one time loaded in Hammer. Thou doth not needeth these extra textures.

4. Thou shalt give Hammer its regular RAM sacrifice. Keep holy this RAM, and clutter it not with memory managers, extra RAM sticks, or other things that might make Hammer useful.

5. Thou shalt keep thy Hammer on the same drive as Half-Life. Thou shall not try to save disk space by keeping Hammer on C:/ and Half-Life on E:/.

6. Thou shalt edit and shuffle the sacred lines of thy FGD until Hammer functions adequately for thee. Thou shalt not give up in vain, for if thou doth so, thou shalt be blaspheming thy name of thy Lord and Master, Hammer.

7. Know in thy heart that Hammer has no backwards-compatibility with certain other versions.

8. Improve thy patience. Thou wilt be required to wade through millions of "Invalid Solid Structure" and "Texture Axis Perpendicular to Face" errors during the simplest of editing maneuvers.

9. Thou shall not, under even the most extreme circumstances, use the evil "Carve" feature mistakenly left in the latest versions of Hammer, lest you be annoyed by many evil emoticons.

10. Learn well thy emergency Undo option (ctrl-z) and thy Vulcan Nerve Pinch (ctrl-alt-delete), for they shall be thy saviour on many an occasion. Believe in thy heart that EVERYONE reboots their Hammer and OS to solve problems that shouldn't happen in the first place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Various types of mappers
El Explicito:
"I tried the thing, ya know, and it worked, ya know, but now it doesn't, ya know?"

Advantages: Provides interesting communication challenges.

Disadvantages: So do chimps.

Symptoms: Complete inability to use proper nouns

Mad Bomber:
"Well, I hit Ctrl-Z, Alt-Q, Shift-S, 'Apply Texture,' and F2, and now it looks all weird."

Advantages: Will try to find own solution to problems.

Disadvantages: User might have made every brush into an empty entity without meaning to.

Symptoms: Help files in Navajo as opposed to English; players come out upside-down in the map

Frying Pan/Fire Tactician:
"It didn't work with the data set we had, so I fed in my aunt's recipe for key lime pie."

Advantages: Will usually fix error.

Disadvantages: 'Fix' is defined VERY loosely here.

Symptoms: A tendency to delete lines that get errors instead of fixing them.

X-user:
"Will you look at those...um, that resolution, quite impressive, really."

Advantages: Using the cutting-edge in mapping technology.

Disadvantages: Has little or no idea how to use the cutting-edge in mapping technology.

Symptoms: Frequent "I remember now..." replies when questions are answered

Miracle Worker:
"But it read compiled yesterday!" 'Sir, at a guess, this map's code has been maliciously malformed.' "But I did that a month ago, and it compiled yesterday!"

Advantages: Apparently has remarkable luck when you aren't around.

Disadvantages: People complain when experienced mappers actually use the word "horse-puckey".

Symptoms: Loses all ability to do impossible when you're around. Must be the kryptonite in your pocket.

Maestro:
"Well, first I sat down, like this. Then I logged on, like this, and after that, I typed in my password, like this, and after that I edited my file, like this, and after that I went to this line here, like this, and after that I picked my nose, like this..."

Advantages: Willing to show you exactly what they did to get an error.

Disadvantages: For as long as five or six hours.

Symptoms: Selective deafness to the phrases, "Right, right, okay, but what was the ERROR?", and a strong fondness for the phrase, "Well, I'm getting to that."

I remember staring at a neon light (which was flickering) and kept thinking just how the hell could I synchronize the blinking sound with the actual light changing.

Hmmm... scrolling texture and looping ambient_generic. Set up the colors in the scroll so that the graphic has red bands when the sign WAV is making noise, and black bands when it is silent. Make the neon glow an additive func_illusionary, with a brush-based actual physical sign in the middle. The glow will appear and disappear as in the example below.

To make the sign actually cast light will be a little bit trickier. I think you could pull it off by making the sign a brush-based entity coated with a texture light, and using the newest hacked builds of Zoner's tools to trigger the texture lights of that brush using a light entity as a reference, and giving the light entity a customlight pattern. Actually synchronizing the texture scroll, light flicker, and sound file will be a complete pain in the ****, and players won't really notice it very much in-game.

You know you've been mapping too much when...

-Everything appears like a triangle to you.
-You switch off your light in your room, you think "Omg, why can't HL calculate RAD that fast..."
-You something cool when going around in your city streets, rush back home, try it and fail.
-You're late to work and you tell your wife : "Quick! or i'm gonna miss the func_train!"
-you're repainting your room and ask yourself why there isn't a texture application tool in real life.

You make your own version of hammer, with a decent Carve tool.
You're able to make a long list of how you know when you've been mapping too long, and are speaking from experience

- You finish painting a smooth, pure white wall in your house, and think "God, that looks ugly."
- You're at the doctor's office or a hospital, for whatever reason, and you notice that the architecture is nice and detailed, with broken-up walls and split-level floors, but without wasting too many polys on uneccessary details.
- ... It's just too bad everything looks so blocky. They should have angled the walls more, or something.
- ... And there's no way you'll get those recessed lights to look that cool in Hammer.
- You're drawing something on a piece of paper. Your hand slips and a line comes out wrong. Your other hand instinctively reaches for ctrl+z.
- You drive past a water pumping station, and you think to yourself, "I could do that in 200 wpolys!"
- You're at the discount supermarket. You look up and notice all the ugly girders, plumbing, wiring, and duct-work they didn't bother to cover up with ceiling tiles so they could pass the savings on to you. "What an awesome ceiling," you exclaim, "It's so detailed!"
-You wonder why nobody has created a ZHLT hack that makes "Solid" brush-based entities cast realistic shadows.
-You know why nobody has created a ZHLT hack that makes "Solid" brush-based entities cast realistic shadows, and you petition valve to modify the HL graphics engine to allow for it.

Is there a Comic Book Convention in the midst?

Can I see Star Wars kid battling with his Lucas Fuelled mind?

Can I see a man who has every single Pokemon card and Dresses up like Pikachu (spelling may be wrong)

the answer..is much worse...

A whole topic devoted to VHE 'habbits'....

When browsing through I got very scared. Scared in the sense that it seems that Valve can be rated as an addiction like Alcoholism.

Sorry to rain on the Freeman Parade.

I know its only for a laugh..but interesting important topics must be sparse these days.

- I look around in the living room and notice how warm and atmospheric the white walls are lit. Then I think 'Why the hell does a white textured room look like crap in HL then?!??'
- There is a certain tree in your garden, whenever you look at it you are impressed how detailed it looks and how it could be rebuilt for a hl map. You think about that several days and the result is that you need several technices for different types of trees. These include mathematical accurate texture work, a fractal shape generator and the new transparent model format from Day Of Defeat.
- This one is true, too: I take the dog for a walk, look at these sprites with rendermode glow in the street lamps and wonder if Valve resembled them right in Half-Life. Then I though about NS' env_gamma that could even increase the visual appearence of these halos because when you are close they become overbright.

when you lose touch so far with reality that the mapping tools begin to take on a sexual appeal.

when you act on that interest.

when you buy a new video game (ut2003 in my case) and die constantly in deathmatch while looking at the map itself.... then get upset that someone interrupted you while you were doing that.

When you to find ctrl+z when you make a mistake.
When you look for ctrl+m when you want to turn something around.
When you go on a school trip, see some interesting architecture and work out how many wpolies you would need.
When you walk around your school at lunchtime, mentally putting hives and resource nozzles around the place. Then searching for the compile button.
When you try and activate the console in real life.
