I figured out how to kill the half-life engine!

And its just so crazy it just might work
I was lying in my bed last night trying to go to sleep amongst the gentle sounds of thunder and rainfall, when all of a sudden I had an idea. A wonderfull idea. A gloriously deviant idea! An idea so crazy it just might work!!!

I figured out how to kill the half-life engine.

You see the way I look at it, I'm not a lucky person. Never have been, never will be. So its time to use that bad luck for the general good of mankind.

I figure that if I make a serious attempt to make a mod for half-life, and actually get some work done and whatnot, then when the mod is almost finished one of two things will happen:

1) HL engine doesn't die, I finish the mod, and release it.
or
2) The HL engine will die, and I'll begin porting the mod over to ut2k3 or whatever other engine I choose, allthewhile with the biggest grin on my face.

I know it sounds insane, but those who know me can testify to my extreme bad luck. The only way I can see this plain as failing is if the mod does not get made. That is the only wait to fail.

As most of you know, I hate the half-life engine. I hate it so much, that I will gladly sacrifice my only begotten mod if it means the HL engine's death.

Its genius I tell you! GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DOOM, I really like this idea.

Therefore, I've sent a team of highly trained coders, mappers, animators and composers on their way to you. They'll soon arrive in a happily colorful van with extra - comfy backpart.
They'll first equip you with one their powerful mod-leader suits (white, extra long sleeves), and then bring you in a special secret manison where other people who share your level of genious live.

    Good luck with your project!

No! I shall keep the HL engine alive! I have my special paramedic kit along with HL.EXE, so I should be able to keep it out of the evil clutches of the community.

    Mmm... 4-bit colour... /me drools

The Half-Life Engine Shall Fall, And Upon Its Ashes, A New Engine Shall Arise, That Will Shake The Very Foundations Of Gaming!

Seriously, I've never had any problems with the HL-Engine, but for everyone/everything sometimes the time is over...

A lot of users would be very unhappy with the death of the HL engine:

    Valve's hardware survey

Specifically those with these video controllers that account for half of all users...

I beleive the HL engine's time will not come yet, or for a little while. The things people can do with this engine has become ever more amazing, take a look at the Natural-Selection maps, so advanced you can hardly tell its HL, or the day of defeat maps, with are arguably better than the MOH:AA maps, on the Quake 3 engine!

The HL engine can do wonderful things, and we can expect it to continue doing that for a long time.

Eventually a messiah shall come and give us a new, greater engine, but for now cherish what is given to you, or I'll send my boys round your house soon

The HL engine, being based off Quake, is getting a tad old - better techniques have been developed for doing things enabling higher poly counts, without a need for much better hardware. The original Unreal engine, for example, is better than the HL engine yet still has the option for software rendering should you need it.

However, HL will still continue for quite a while - hell, Quake mods are still getting played.

Half-Life will stay around because it is easiest to make mods for because it comes with a quide how to make one and I comes the sprites and such.

hearing that coming from a skilled coder is sooo nice to hear
personaly I like HL best simply b/c of the # of decent-good-amazing(*vough*NS*cough*) mods there are out there, and that they are still in development

but that's happened two or three times already and everytime they've just crucified him on a voodoo3!

I don't care what the rest of you say! I shall make a mod that causes my bad luck to strike the HL engine dead! then we'l see who's laughing (it'll be me)!

oh i'm gonna wait till NS has been out for a long time before I release though, don't worry flayra i won't waste your work ;)

you know there is a 3rd thing that could hapen (and this is whaT I figgurE)

you get your entire mod done, and it works perfectly becoming the next CS (when CS was a good thing), however you die in a freak accident involving your head, and 3 bannana slugs

see this fits into your bad luck, primarily b/c it would be GL for you if the engine died and bad if it got a new surge of energy

There is yet another possibility, you have your mod all complete and you are 10 minutes from releasing it when a freak EMP surge across the whole planet wipes out your HD and all backup copies of your MOD but leaves everyone elses data intact.

Just a thought, that would be bad luck too right.

I'll probably still be playing HL several years from now... until I get a new PC anyway. I don't think anything is going to make it die... it's just too... it has a certain something that makes it stand out.

I wonder if people had this discussion about Doom (the original, now)?

[off-topic]I'm going away until Sunday. See you.[/off-topic]

One of the reasons the HL engine is so popular because it is arguably the easiest engine to work with for mod makers, and another game still hasent broken that record. If another game does, then I'm sure everyone will switch over

doom 1 was way easier to mod for, yet people switched over :P

I think the HL engine will die of it's own accord within 10-15 years. That's my best guess.

because part of my curse entails that any software bugs stick out at me like a sore thumb. I just tend to notice crap nobody else notices. Or i'm the first to report it even if not discovered. Its quite annoying at work though when I'm just trying to do my job and I run into a stupid problem with their software...

I'm not trying to brag, its just one of the gifts/curses I have hehe.
