I figured out that Impulse 7 through 12 are the Alien "radio" noises. Anyone who's played the older NS know what they are supposed to mean? They're located in the ns\sound\vox folder as asay11.wav to asay61.wav.
tehy were mostly growls. they were things that we all spam alot: attack, heal me, im building here, needs help / reinforcements teh problem was noone ever knew what each growl ment, the only way to find out was to look under teh aliens name and ti would show up a status like
I use them a lot, but only old players know what they mean (dont expect all gorges to react to the "need healing" sound)
Impulse 7 = Chuckles Impulse 8 = Need healing Impulse 9 = Need backup Impulse 10 = Incoming Impulse 11 = Attack! Impulse 12 = I'm building here!
My fav is when i'm gorge and a skulk come for a heal, then i heal him, angrily answering "I'm building here!" (I love the sound). <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo-->

A Gorge needs to know the Kharaa language in order to understand the 'heal me' sound. There's really more to the speech of the Kharaa than the few sounds that you can make. Sure, they already have their defined meanings - but you could make really interesting patterns back in the days.
For example, if you chuckled (impulse 7) and then interrupted the sound at the right moment with the "incoming" sound (impulse 10), you could start the beat for Queen's "We will rock you" tune.
Of course, since people kept spamming these voice commands, a delay of 2-3 seconds was put between each use - so it is harder to make combinations. You're left with the necessity to communicate through the microphone or text.
I wish there was a way to tie some of the other voice samples you can find if you poke through your Natural Selection folder.
What I wouldn't give to bind a button to the Hive Mind vocal sample: "We need better playersssss~", or for when I keep some rambo out of the hive, "This is MY hive. There are many like it... but this one... is MINE."
Why are they there if they are never used?
Also: Wouldn't it be fun to bind one of the marine taunt messages as an alien? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I can think of nothing funnier than to chainsaw through a marine or two as a skulk, then before their vision fades out, spam: "My shrink says I need an OUTLET for my AGRESSION..."
I saw this one time, but in order to do it, the guy had to turn the voice sample into a WAV, and then play it using voice chat. And since that meant only the aliens could hear, and laugh their heads off, the effect was mostly wasted.
Swift: On this one server I play, I think it's the DG clan server, they have it set up where you type out said message "Need better players" and it plays the sound. I do wonder if you can bind one of the marine taunts to a key and be able to play it as alien, that would be interesting.
The taunts and different sounds have always been fun. Was playing on one server, talking about how the next meal they ate may have been the armory they humped on that map, and one of the guys did the marine taunt and it came up with "Man, I just lost my appetite..." I love NS for those funny moments that manage to pop up.

The devs were probably having a bit of a laugh, the same with the "i see dead people" wav. Although there are some triggers, search the forums, you'll find some answers. Eg. ive found that if i build a couple of chambers in a room or a room is filled with several chambers it says "this place is a mess",, only sometimes though, i cant find the precise trigger. On some servers the "Now, we donce" wav is played when you get 3 hives.
The wavs are amusing either way (ive used some in my windows sounds, when i empty the recycle bin it says "this place is a mess" <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> )
::edit:: You can find the list of impulses at this <a href='http://www.ausns.org/commands.php' target='_blank'>url</a>
As you can see the marine impulse 9 is taunt, but which is 'need backup' for the aliens, so yea the only way to have them say the marine taunts is change the sound files <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
With FF on, biting the gorge to indicate to him that you want a heal is not acceptable. Biting wildly at all with FF on isn't good either. Thus, the sounds are extremely useful in league play.
No matter how nubbly killing your own gorge during a scrim or match may seem, I've seen it happen. Actually, I've even been the gorge. Grrr...
i use to love those sounds! i would usually gather up a force to attack the marine base, i would tell my comrades "Ok... when i make a strange groaning sound all attack" and it would firstly, freak da marines out and secondly, it would be a lot better than the one second delay voice com...
<!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> bring them back please!
by da way... a question... does the new scent of fear detect any marines within it's range or still only ones that are injured in any way?
I renamed the sound files recently (IE: Today) to see what would happen. I now hear "My shrink says I need an outlet for my agression" when I should be hearing the heal-me sound, and I hear "I see dead people" when I chuckle. Is this only going to be what I hear, and not those around me? I'm assuming such would be the case, since it would be kind of exploity to use marine com noises like "I got your back" while you're sneaking up on a marine who is building things. Well maybe not exploity, but pretty cheesy. You know, the kind of tactic you would laugh at if it weren't for the fact that it's also a little unfair and dishonest.
Anyway, I figured I'd rename the sound files and see what would happen. I also dumped some of the unused ambient tracks from the sounds folder into the music folder. I'm in the process of copying a few MP3s and dumping them in a folder in the music folder, and switching the ambient music for some good Techstep electronica played at a low volume when I feel like it.
I'd love to test this, but my favorite vanilla tournament mode server is pretty much empty all the time nowadays. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> Plus, steam only lists a few other servers with people in them, while I know for a fact there must be unlisted ones. Where the hell do all the L337 ppl play these days?

I think it'd be great, and much more characterful than "bite me for healing". <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> I thought you don't like scripts?
I forgot I used these two:
Put these two in your config.cfg in your ns folder, make sure the .cfg is READ ONLY else the server will erase these.
bind z "sayteam Health Now!; impulse 10" bind x "sayteam Ammo Now!; impulse 11"
Hitting z on marines spams the message and calls for a medpack, so the comm has all the info he needs, doing it on the alien team makes the message and whatever alien you are using begs for HP with a hurt sound.
The ammo bind is the same as it is for health, but on aliens it makes the weird noise I have no clue of what it does.
Also, you may think these impulses are wrong, they don't match with the dude above me, however, the truth is, he's wrong, I use these binds ALL the time every single game of NS I play. Incredibly useful.
It's a pity that the hivesight no longer says the message like it used to in 1.04. Even if they were underused, I fail to see the harm of leaving them in. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
The hive mind still speaks ingame , but it is less likely to be triggered. Some of the triggers have been modified also. I think you only hear "now , we donce" if you have 3 hives AND several onos.
Since the WoLs are smaller and not many , "this place is a mess" shouldn't be played very often.
Alien noises are fun to use and do help teamwork , but only if your teammates speak Kharaa. The "incoming" sound is obscure and hard to hear , but can give instant , vital info to a threatened gorge for exemple. The "need healing" noise is known by most experienced NS players , so it's always helpful in pickup games ; the "need backup" faint growl is obvious and also known , because it uses the same impulse as the marine taunt (which has a key assigned in the control menu) but it's sometimes taken as an "alien taunt" while it tells your teammates to assist or protect you. I've never found a use for the impulse 11 as an alien. If you're a gorge , chances are you're building something nearby. If you're sitting near a res nodes , decently intelligent teammates understand that you are saving for a RT , same with the hive. This message is too specialized and too generic at the same time , it gives little info. At best you can use it to tell friends to stay away as you build stuff , or as a gorge egg that you're planning to build that hive.
other players definately cannot hear your custom sound files if you've replaced them. Also i wouldnt bother replacing ambient sounds, just have your winamp mp3 list running in the background, it is much better quality that way.
And different impulses mean different things for the aliens and marines as i have said before. Thats why if you have bound a marine impulse, using it as aliens is still the same impulse, but it means something else. Just check my url i posted in the previous post.
Lol id love to see a skulk sneak up on a marine and say "Got ur six" then proceed to chomp. Highly amusing =)
the alien sounds were a pretty stupid idea. no one could be bothered learning the sounds because theres just no advantage over using the mic or typing + everyone knew that no one else bothered to learn the sounds so didnt bother themselves <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Dude you have no idea how often I use the marine communications to screw with the aliens. Every time I hear one in the vent, I do the "I got your back" or "I'm coverin' ya" call. Sometimes I'll call out "This way!" or "Follow me." if I'm running in a direction.
They need specific taunts you can throw at the aliens, just like the aliens need to be able to use the Hive Mind voice for the marines to hear. How great would it be to activate the "Now... we donce" vocal sample just as you Blink-hop into a crowd of marines and slice a few up. Ditto with the "I see dead people" sample, or whatever else. Gorges could use the "This is my hive..." sample. Why not? They aren't being used as it is. What a shame.
yea i use marine voice com a lot aswell. When two of us arrive at an empty res nozzle, i yell "i got your back", to let the other rine know im covering and he can build. Or the "standing by.." sound is usefull when the comm hasnt realised you've cleared a location.
I think the marine style of playing is significantly different, ie they move in squads and such, while aliens seem to run around on their own. There would be no need for these voice comms, eg. when are you ever going to need to tell another alien "i got your back"; if they are gorge and you are skulk that goes without saying =\
