Is It Possible To Play The Old Version Of Ns?

reasareasa Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 8010Members, Constellation
I was just wondering, I personaly like the old version of NS much better then this new one. Are there any servers that still run the old NS? Just something about this one, it lost that original coolness...or something, all the levels are changed, games seem to last just a little longer then a round of CS. I kinda miss the old hour long stand offs. Anyway any help would be much appreicated.

    I can't answer your question, but I will add a comment. :-p

I rather like NS 2.x better than the old versions, but likewise I miss the longer games. On my favorite server I believe the average game time to be about 20 minutes. :-/

if you have an earlier version installed (i.e. 1.04) and you search for servers using 1.04 etc, you might find one or two, if not just have a lan where all your friends do a previous version

If you use the All Seeing Eye you can find it easily.

Like I said in the other thread you just put up about practically the same thing I see plenty of long games now. You cant miss something that isnt gone.

All i have to say about the previous versions is:

    OMG T3H JP RUSH & T3H H0V4R1NG W/O FLAPPING!

1.0-1.04 are all terribly imballanced due to the jetpack's frame rate dependancy... in fact the JP's, Leap, and Charge's frame rate dependancy. Then you have the flashlight exploit... and the faster build speeds with a higher frame rate...

    [sarcasm]Yup. 1.04 is really fun . . .[/sarcasm]
So fun you wont find any full or even half empty servers using it...

Yes playing old versions of games is pointless. I realized this with DoD.

Atm All Seeing Eye shows 3 servers that run 1.04, but there is no players in them.

I've occasionally tried to join a server and been told I couldn't because it was running 1.4...I think maybe Flummis Selection? At any rate, I haven't found a way to filter between 1.4 and 2.0 servers, they both seem to show up on the same screen.

    DESPITE the bugs / exploits

if you took 1.04, and fixed all those bugs you mentioned, and put in a few more tweaks that are in 2.0 (such as more powerful lerk, less chances of marine rushing at start, and tweaking the marine economy some) i believe 1.04 would be better than the 2.0 version.

The gorge alone in 1.04 was way more fun to play. now it's just a chore to go gorge
in 1.04, multiple gorges at the start slowed down aliens.. but if you only double gorged when the second hive hit, then you were fine

in 2.0, the gorge hardly gets any res, anyways. so it's not fun anyways
in 1.04 you were constantly rebuilding and protecting your hives and outposts better.. in 2.0, you hardly have a defense at ONE hive

you shouldn't expressed your opinion about 2.0, you should of just asked your question, alot of people like 2.0 and some people still like 1.04, it will turn into a flame war and your post will be locked. but like they said, use all seeing eye, and just install the old version of NS

reasa, if your new to 2.01 give it some time. I didnt like it when i first downloaded it and was thinking of quiting ns but then i just kept playing and I found it to be a LOT better than the old one.

Yes, gorge in 1.0 to 1.04 was fun...

if you went it. Meaning, there could only be one gorge on the alien team, which totally suxxed.

Stop by sometime we had an 185 minute stalemate game going on on ns_tanith (I think)....talk about a long drawn out game.

Most of the time the round lasts about 25 - 30 minutes, sometimes less if the other team just doesn't get the vibe of the round.

i loved 1.04, but i cant go back. Compared to 2.0 - 1.04 is deathly slow, horrendously boring because of the same strat each time. ALWAYS jp / hmg. always a rush to get umbra etc etc. although my favorite part was bunny hopping on marines

Your argument about JP/HMG rush is void, rarely did a single one hive lerk *not* stop a JP/HMG rush on the publics i played on. Plus by the end of 1.0's life the "1.05 unofficial" multi-metamod plugin was being used, which, aside from spawning aliens in umbra clouds, made JP almost exactly as it is in 2.0, flashlight exploit never bugged me, as switching weapons while reloading was only slightly slower anyway (still works btw).

The build speeds gave the game a slightly different feel, like some people were better at building where others were not.. kind of RPGish.

And even in 2.0 (not 2.01) leap and charge *were* frame rate dependant, now charge is more of a super burst of celerity x 5 for the onos, and leap.. well.. run away anyone?

I personally like 1.04/5, 2.0, and 2.01 but in that order also, seems gameplay overpowers funplay nowadays.

1.0 was changed so dramatically to what is 2.0 now BECAUSE very few people could play the game the way it was intended to be played, people were fearful to evolve to Lerk on one hive, as admins in the past have been known to ban you because "The gorge needs your overflow".. yet, the hive needs that lerk to survive so the gorge can make use of the other players overflow, every strat in 1.0 had a counter strat, 2 hive lockdowns - do everything in your power to NOT allow this to happen, JP/HMG rush - get the lerks in the air, more mobility and speed, and a nasty set of teeth. Fades who liked to acid spam - get up close and personal (didnt even need a whole lmg clip at lvl0 - unless they took carapace, which rarely happened) Early game Skulk rush - one or two base defenders (the need of aim is fairly obvious)

The main reason i prefer 1.0 over 2.0 (although its really only slightly) is the hive dependancy, I believe the main cause of stress in 2.0 public servers to be the people who dont kill, dont build, dont parasite, but run arround saving for onos, but then, the whole res system would have to be redone again.

The biggest problem with 2.0 is that now that less people see a "need" to go gorge, I end up gorging the entire round. I mean, 10 res? Res for kills? Bah, who wants to go gorge? We can do anything we want as long as we kill enough? Even then we can still go gorge if needed? Right? Wrong. Gorge is needed. At all times. Its never gone a temporary job. the "We need builders" call is right and always has been. Even worse, I get no thanks. 1.04, it doesn't matter how long you were gorge, as long as you did your job you always got to hear "Nice try Gorge" or "Good job gorge" when you got back to the ready room. Now that gorge is seen as less of a full round class, it seems that the people who do go gorge get stuck as it full round no matter if you like it or not and no one notices. People didn't stop asking for a hive, rt or upgrade chambers.. So please tell me why they stopped thanking the gorge then?
