Wind Waker Or Soul Calibur 2?

decisions decisions...
Well I've decided to blow that $45 gift card on either Wind Waker, or Soul Calibur 2. But I can't really decide which. :/

- I've already beaten Wind Waker, and don't have an immediate desire to play it again, however it is one of those games that I know I'll run through again at least 8 times in the next 10 years. Its one of those games I don't want to ever get rid of like I did (regretably) with A Link To The Past.

- Soul Calibur 2 is fun, but I only like it cause I can play as Link. I have absolutely zero desire to play it as any other character. And when I rented it, I had already beaten the game with Link, and I'm quite sure that the only time I'll play it is 2 player with either my roomate Chad or my friend Stephen, both of whom are kinda indifferent to fighting games, but I really don't have any good 2 (or more) player games to play...

hmm, replaying good games is fun, but there's soo many good games out there -- why not get one you haven't played yet? Then again, I'm a PS2 guy, I dunno what's out there for gamecube...

all I know is I got bored of SC2 in one rental period =P but I'm not a fighter guy...

Gasp! At least you owned it once.

I'd pick Wind Waker, if you want a fighting game for GameCube, go for SSB:M. I haven't played SCII, but I heard it's really bad, and Link's a cheap character.

smash bros for the N64 was awesome, so I'd second Liku's suggestion =P

hmm... well, i would pick neither, especially since you beat both of em. i would get a different game, or save it for a game that is coming out, like hl2 or something. heck, get halo pc if you wanna spend it now.

but if i HAD to choose, i'd get wind waker. scII is a good game, but it gets boring after a while. and even after hours of learning a characters entire move set, AND more hours of learning when to use the moves and stances, you still get beat by a friend that JUST picked up the controller and hits A like he was playing mario party.

hm. Maybe I will rent a few more gamecube games. Its just that there aren't any Gamecube or PS2 games out that have any interest whatsoever in playing. The 4 good PS2 games I have (GTA3, Vice City, FFX, and MGS2) and I don't know of any others. Likewise with the 'cube I already got Metroid Prime, MK5, and Mario Sunshine...

meh :/

I was disappointed.

Then again I was disappointed with the "original" and all of its sequels.

Alone In The Dark clone if you ask me. AITD was the true inventer of the Survival Horror genre, and to this day I've yet to see a game do better (although I've yet to try that one really popular one on PS/2)

Since you've beaten both of them, why did you narrow it down to those two?
Perhaps since you so regret getting rid of A Link to the Past, you could buy a copy of that.
Of course theres allways emulation for that sort of thing anyway....

If you haven't played Devil May Cry for PS2, you might want to check that out. I don't see the point in buying games you've already beaten when you could be getting other great games that you haven't yet experienced. If you must own Zelda just to collect it and play it a few years down the road then maybe you should wait for the price to go down first.

As for SSBM I think the first one was better. This one is just too floaty for my tastes. The first one had a more solid feel to it and I liked the air combat a lot more.

Ah yes, when I played SSBM I thought that at first. Of course it was just all nostalgia for the old one. Going back and playing it revealed it's serious flaws, mainly centering around it's SP mode.

Meh, SC2 is nice, but I wouldn't bother with it. I mean dayum, I got to the boss at the arcade on ONE TRY. I could of beaten the entire game in under 10 mins, but I didn't want to bother wasting another buck on tokens.

The whole point of SCII is 2 player endless battles against skilled and daring foes; the single player's just kinda a filler or an intro to help new players get used to the fighting system and build up some confidence.
if your friends aren't into fighting games you're really not going to enjoy SCII the way it's meant to be so I wouldn't bother =/

Link's sooo not cheap, if you want cheap just fight against me and I'll show you whole new levels of cheapness you didn't even think were possible with just about any character.... especially nightmare

SSBM is a great pickup and play game for 3-4 players ^^
The old one was fun but having played both side by side the GC sequel is faar superior to it's old N64 partner, especially in the singleplayer stakes like Ness said

Other games that are good pickup and plays for most people are stuff like Mario Party 4, Super Monkey Ball 2 and depending on the players; Bomberman generations!!! it's like the original bomberman games but with lots of fun game modes like coin and survival. It's a great giggle =D
If you're a shootemup fan ikaruga is a definite recommendation or if you're an F-zero/racing fan then that should be out soon enough.

edit: fixed a silly mistake ^^;

*Kisses Alone in the Dark* I LOVED that game! But it was on Floppies and totally inconvenient. And I never played 2, 3, or 4.

Ikaruga's like... 6 Levels. Instead of F-Zero, don't get it [It's already out]. Get Extreme GIII instead, and you can probably get that for cheap. My friend got it for $9.99 at Hollywood Video Used, his best used buy ever.

Not only is F-zero already out, but i'll give you a quick review of it.

F-zero GX is the devil. No ifs ands or buts about it. Nothing anyone could say could convince me that this game is anything less than pure concentrated evil in it's original state. Regardless of your level of skill, this game is so amazingly difficult, grazing a wall on Novice (lowest setting) on Ruby Cup (lowest cup) will pluck you out of 1st place, and plop you into 30th. Catching back up to the pack? Better be prepared to shell out life to speed up, of which you have a rather limited supply. I myself got 1st place on Novice on Ruby Cup. On Standard (normal difficulty), I found myself struggling and sweating for 22nd place, on the same cup.. This is a game for the hardest of hardcore gamers. Graphics? Sweet. Controls? Nice. Multiplayer? It's there. If you get 1st place in Emerald Cup on the most difficult setting, you are my god. It's as simple as that. I will take a picture of myself bowing down with my digital camera. This is not your dad's racer, folks, and this isn't Mario Kart.

trust me, you can dodge or even parry the arrows pretty easily; they're not a problem and they've got some serious downtime after firing compared to other moves =3
Against an experienced opponent Link's not much more than a novelty, his moves are cool and stuff but most of the other characters have a more 'stable' set of attacks to choose from. It was fun when none of the guys in the flat had fought elf-boy before and we were getting used to SC on a gamecube pad but it didn't take long before anyone playing link got KOed pretty quick =s

edit: oh yeah, mariokarts coming out too

My friend says that there's someone with a really long Staff that just keeps whacking you back so you can't do anything about it. He also says that it's not a game you get good at and challenge everyone too, but just fun.

yeah, it's all about fun... it's just that the guys around here play it so much that the matches are pretty interesting to watch. We just sit in a big room, chat, giggle and pass the pad around.

The big stick people are Seung Mina and Kilik; I can kinda see how he might complain but they're just like every other character. Once you know how to deal with the playing style of the person behind the character it's lots easier. In their case it's just important to remember that their damage isn't great and to block/parry/dodge at the right times so you don't get combo juggled =3

edit: problem with SCII is, it's fun for most people for a while but without some fighter-fans around it tends to get old quick.

Hmmmmm, didn't Wind Waker have a special edition of Ocarina of time that came with it? If u can get that edition then i say definitly Wind Waker. Besides u cloked the game but haf u gotten all the special little goodies that come with zelda games? and discovered all teh wonderful sekrets?

Sorry Charlie, that was a limited edition bonus disc that came with pre-orders. it included OoT with higher res, and it also included OoT with hard and often...odd..dungeons (Master Quest). If you didn't preorder and get it then, you can't now.

I hear that in two-player SC2, a buttonmashing opponent will drive you nuts. My personal choice would be Wind Waker.
• RedfordRedford Monorailcatfjord Join Date: 2002-04-28 Member: 528Members, NS1 Playtester
It's personally gotten to the point for me where wind waker is "Another zelda game". Yes, it's graphs redemine "drop-dead beautiful" and it has an intresting and innovative world that makes you THINK to navigate around. However, it is still a zelda game, and not even a very hard one at that (allthough there are some large annoying rooms with small annoying platforms). There are still a few places where you can get stuck. Even so, the last two deungons are harder (and innovative - you get an extra character with certain abilities you can carry around or swap with), and the final quest can be a brain twister. Even better - there's tons to explore. There are a total of 3+1+2 full hearts from minor bosses, and you start with three. This means that 11 of your 20 hearts will come from container pieces. This is more container pieces then any previous zelda game (44 to be exact) which makes exploring everything even more important. You also get a wallet with a max size of 5,000 this time around (it starts at 200, upgrade it). This means, in general that you are allways looking for rupees and never have enough for everything. You won't walk though half the game with max rupees and nothing to spend them on. I belive at one point the highest amount of rupees I ever had was 3,000, and I spent a lot of them on somthing or other. Thusly, finding rupees by getting treasure charts or just general treasure hunting is enjoyable (and very important!) as well.

The final verdict?

Tons of stuff to find. The main quest at the start is perhaps a little easy, but it doesn't stay that way. It's still the same old zelda - ship or not. However, if that doesn't bother you, the game's a hoot.

Soul calibur 2... I hear is a notorious button masher. That is all I can tell you. Fighting games aren't my thing.
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
rather than hearing from other people I can tell you from actually personal experience button mashers are nothing to fear if you learn the game properly ~rolls eyes~

yeahh I remember AITD... straight out of a Lovecraft novel... even with the 5-polygon monsters, it was horrifying... I think I played the fourth too, and it didn't come close to stacking up.

Resident Evil 2 for the PS1 was a sweet scary game. Any scary game with a police station has to have one of those one-way mirrors, and you know what's gonna happen, and that makes it even MORE terrifying =x

Maybe consider getting Devil May Cry, 1 or 2, or one of those Square anthologies with Chrono Trigger or FF6, or maybe Gran Turismo... I enjoyed Dark Cloud, even though it's somewhat geeky and primitive by ps2 standards.

I still dont, think Soul Calibur 2, Is really a good fighting game cause it gets boring VERY fast
and In my opinion snk games like last blade, the kof series and the street fighter series are twice the fun.
Oh and you cant foget Guilty gear either allthough its more of a good looking fihting game than a gr8 all round one.
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
My fav fighting game is actually Guilty Gear (~huggles GGX~) but SCII is good; it's not the same as 2D fighters though.
2D ones tend to be more about super-mega-death combos, crazy stunts and over-the-top timing while SC&SCII are more about strategy and making good use of the 3D movements than hard to do moves. It's kinda like comparing a game of dodge-ball to a game of chess... they play really different but they're both fun in their own way
