Staring At Screen Causes Eyestrain,headaches.

But only with new comp?
Okay.I replaced my old comp with a new one. Most importantly went from tnt2 to radeon 9000.
I turn on the comp.I look at the screen.Sheeit.A couple of seconds staring at it and my eyes feel like its gonna explode.
I mean i get the feeling the screen is too bright.I screw with the brightness, the contrast, everything but the best thing ive managed to accomplish is to delay the effects.
Heres the clincher.I didnt change the monitor. So how did this happen?
I checked.Optimal mode had the refresh rate at 90 HZ.Okay so thats bad.I lower it to 75 HZ.Delayed the effects a bit more, but i still need the screen at a very dark brightness and contrast value...
Anyone got any ideas whats going on?I mean all i did was increase the CPU speed, get a new video card and my monitor goes haywire with super-duper brightness that makes my eyes want to explode?

Heh I have that problem all the time, its almost impossible to look at the screen. But after a couple days of dealing with it I think your eyes will adjust. But (and this always happens to me) when you don't get on your comp for a couple days its starts all over again
What kinda monitor is it anyways? I know you've not changed it but the best monitors for saving your eyes are either flat-screen monitors with a high refresh rate or LCD ones (which are poop for games because of the blur).
still, it's pretty odd o.O
Sorry but if you don't have an LCD monitor, don't talk.
I have an LCD without a digital input and the picture is clearer than my CRT previous monitor. The quality of the picture, of course, depends on the quality of the LCD.
sorry, but don't presume stuff about people huh?
okies, some of the newer ones might be better but I was just talking from my experience of the ones I've used =3
The LCD here might get blurry when things move fast but the picture itself is crystal clear and super crisp ^^
The fact they take up less desk space was cool too, it was just the annoying blur that put me off really thinking about getting one.
The one I've used is L.T.Works or something? bleh... it's my step-dads and he's not really a computer freak or anything so it could just be a crud one
To be fair to CRTs though I run this one at 85Hz and I don't get sore eyes off it at all. the only major downside is that it takes up lots of my little desk =s
edit: fixed a really really bad typo ^^;
And also, the quality is much better than the CRT (at least at 1024x768) and when I'll get a graphics card with a digital output, things will get super clear.
But now I think we're hijacking the thread... Ahem...
The same one in 15" costs 100 Euros less.
Let's go back on Hunty's problem, we ARE hijacking a bit.. I think you need a new screen, I don't know where the problem is. What kind of screen is it? (how old/model for example) Getting the refresh rate up usually is good, but might need a tiny time of adaptation if you're used to low refresh (like 10 seconds I would say.. I never used low refreshes so I wouldn't know)
Also, if your screen is of bad quality, it is most certainly because it doesn't show a correct image, maybe it's distorted and the screen is having problems. But I don't know WHY you have eyestrain on high refresh rates if it's not a screen problem.
if you can get your hands on one of the newer Photoshops they have a screen adjustment type thingy you can use to make your monitor even brighter/darker than it'll normally go. It's mainly for getting your screen to match the 'neutral' point so everyone will see your artwork the same way (long explanation I'm not going into here) but it might help out =D
yet another idea edit: Try playing with the 'temperature' settings on your monitor as these actually effect the colouration instead of anything like the heat of the electronics... having it at an excessively high or low temperature could probably hurt your eyes lots =s
any less for me an i get eye strain.
however, LCD screens are awsome for applications, espesialy programing.
That doesn't make any sense. We're talking about the refresh rate of the monitor, not the in-game update frequency. The true mistery is, why do his eyes hurt, eventhough the monitor stayed the same. I think he just stared into the box too much...
There should be a gamma setting somewhere that you can change. Find it, and crank it down some.
If it's at 60Hz that's why you're going nuts. 60Hz is not only painful, it's visible (to me and several people I know anyway, maybe not to everyone). You probably had it at 100Hz (or something around there) before and now you can't put it back.
Someone told me that ATI fixed that bug in the new drivers, but I haven't dared test them to find out. If you haven't downloaded the new drivers yet you could try that and see if you can get the refresh rate up.
Alternatively, this page http://www.omegacorner.com/ati_help.htm has some information for fixing the refresh rate bug under Windows XP (I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information - I have not tried it, nor do I have Windows XP to even verify the existence of the options)
I can't find any agreement on whether it's a Windows problem, a drivers problem, a monitor problem, or some conflict of all three. Only reliable fix I've found (I'm running Win98) is to install old drivers for the card (from back before the Catalyst chain if I remember - and I don't know off hand if there are any old enough for a Radeon 9000). If you can find really old drivers though that could fix the problem.
Hope something there was useful. I practically live on computers, so I know what a pain low refresh is. Good luck fixing it.
[edit] Fixed some detail [/edit]
Still im going to try that ATI refresh fix again.Btw using latest uh catalyst drivers or whatcha call it....
P.S.Getting new monitor not a solution
As for where to set the refresh rate, I'd suggest (when you finally manage to get it adjusted) you put it as high as your monitor will support. If it can only do 75Hz, put it at 75Hz. It's still much better than 60Hz.
I just now took a swing by the ATI drivers page to see if I could find the driver for you, and I'm afraid I have bad news. The first drivers to support the Radeon 9000 were Catalyst drivers, and I think this problem has been in the Catalyst chain since day one. So the WinXP fix and the old driver fix are out. A new monitor (which understandably is not an option), may or may not fix it anyway. You could try a Radeon driver that's older than the card, but even if it did support it somehow, I don't know how well it would work.
My work Comp is so **** the HZ is running at about 45
I can almost see the lines on the screen.
You want to talk about bad.
The gamma is also way too high and combinded with the flouresant lights of my office, my eyes bleed!
