If it fixes the menus then I might install it though ^^
Oh well, I will eventually have to get that to play the godly game of NS.
It is my drug.

Stop bashing steam. You have no reason to. Steam=pwn. WON=d3d.

Oh there is reason.. well two..
1) Steam is another program for windows to hang on, because when steam crashes on my pc the game crashes, but if the game crashes, steam doesn't.
and
2) Have you seen that font it uses .... eww :S
the in game font or the acctual steam font?
since both of them can be easily changed.
But after a completed round my HL - most of the time - crashes with "can't find model player/commander/commander.mdl" ? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
1. What does steam do that WON doesn't do? In other words, why is there a push to change over to steam in the first place? What is steam's function?
2. If I get steam, and the steam-based NS package, will I still be able to connect to regular NS servers, or do I need to go to special steam servers?
- Friends list & messager that works in and out of game
- much faster and better server search system
- Card Games, chess, go, checkers
- The steam version of NS doesn't crash unlike the Won one for me for some reason ^^;
- Steam's the new system, WON's going to be closed down so the fact that steam's not getting thrown out the window is a pretty big pro for it right there =3
2) Steam Servers
- As far as I can tell it's steam servers for steam clients, I've not seen anyone using steam on a WON server nor vica versa
- Once steam is 'finished' normal servers <b>will</b> be steam servers <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Well that's 1 problem with steam... Think of those who don't even KNOW about Steam? What will they think when they're not going to be able to play their HL games, without the slightest clue how to fix it? See, at least you're aware of Steam's existence even if you don't have it.
You can find it on steampowered.com, else search google...

My solution is go to your "models" folder copy null.mdl and rename the copy as "commander.mdl" and put it where the error asks you to.
Maybe when they shut down the WON servers, Valve should use one or two of them just to tell people that try to connect that they have to download Steam(via a console message in HL). If the server list is empty then they could host a server that tells people that in the title.

Bagh!
Compaired to Capitalisim, Communisim is new also, does that make it better?
Steam has been a nightmare in the ns community becouse Valve decided that the third biggest HL mod wasn't worth including in any pre-release plans. Two thumbs down for Steam three thumbs down for Valve.
Steam has some great ideas, and in a few years once all the nasty bugs are worked out as well as Valve solving Steams bandwidth issues, It may then become a great program.
Valve was well aware that they were building Steam off of code thats over 8 years old, and trying to pass it off as new. This old and out of date code is the core of the problem. Its slow and bulky, Where as the old WON system was simple and dependable this new Autentication system dubbed Steam has proven to be such a failure that the release of HL2 was pushed back due to Valves lack of confidence in Steams readiness.
Further more looking a few years down the road Valve plans to use Steam as an advertising and marketing platform. I'm sure many of you have noticed all the blank banner-sized boxes on many of the Steam interface screens. Valve also plans in the future to sell you new software as well as game upgrades through steam. I hate to be the one to tell you that when you bought HL or DOD or even Counter strike you payed good money for a CD key that will allow you to be subjected to advertiseing every day from here on out while you are trying to log on to your favorite game server. To all the people that support steam, I say this, ENJOY.
In keeping with the thread topic I DL'd the installer and it seems to work fine thanks for the hard work joev. I will play Steam games with the rest of my friends, But not untell the last WON server gets unplugged.

What's bad is that they haven't released documentation for adding Steam support for mod developers. This is most likely due to the fact that they are busy fixing Steam, fixing CS, fixing HL, dealing with the hacker, writing a new SDK for HL2, and finishing HL2. They have plenty of valid excuses.

Confused and misinformed.

Then, when Valves offers an optional purchase method, you scorn them. Are you that dim? Why do you want to be a victim?
I'm sorry you had to be the guy that finally pushed me over the edge. Take this as a vent more than a personal attack, if you must. If people want to insult Valve unjustly, I will insult them right back.
only problem i have with it, is that i just dont want another background program running at all, make the authentication off on some remote server network somewhere and i couldnt care less. I dont trust something that says it is "working" (at what i dont know) when i have auto everything turned off :/
yes thats right, if i want to update it, ill do it my self ta :/
That and the instability of it all, but that should be fixed... oh, and i assume i can still go to the shops and buy valve games, i mean, they dont really want us all to turn into half human half pc beings? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
And im installing the new beta as i type, hope the font is nice <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Is this true?
And if so, what happens when my friends and I get together to run a LAN game without an internet connection?
Also, what happens to my one friend who is playing off an older computer -- one that barely meets the minimum specs for NS and is horribly short on hard-drive space? Will he require the extra 3/4 of a gig of "steampower" in order to run a game he used to be able to run just fine?
I just went and checked my old WON halflife folder to my new steam one and there's only around 200MB size difference. Where did the whole 3/4 gig come from? o.O
<b>edit:</b> my 'personally fixed' steam version of NS started mysteriously crashing all of a sudden so I took it out and put this version in... so far so good ^^
